i like it - so far . . . . kill kill kill kill kill kill kill but without the 'sameness' that is Doom iii . . . more FUN - like Serious Sam series.
we disagree . . . that is true . . . . i gave Doom iii a 3.5 out of 10 ("1" for gameplay) it sucked so bad . . . . "repetitive" isn't quite the word. . . . . Creepiness? Try Shalebridge Cradle level in Thief-DS - horror like the Exorcist . . . . Doom iii is to videogame horror what the latest Dawn of the Dead is to horrow movies.Originally posted by: dgevert

Wow. I disagree so strongly it isn't funny. I won't argue that DOOM 3 doesn't get repetitive (though it's got a creepiness factor that I absolutely loved) but Painkiller IS the exact same thing, over and over again, from what I can tell, a few levels into it. I just don't feel motivated to play it...it's the most mindless game I've ever played, even counting old-school Doom games.

edit: for those that finished the game . . . . how important is it to unlock every level and get the black tarot cards? essential? shall i go back and break and get everything?
...
What i read indicates you need to collect ALL the black tarot cards but you're only able to get 22 cards on the two lowest difficulties. On the Nightmare difficulty you can get the 23rd card from the Prison stage. Once you have all 23 cards you can play the game on Trauma with its Forest stage to get the final card to finish the game on Trauma to see the real ending.

His spoiler link works just fine, it's simply well hidden.
Gamershell.com is the only place I found that has a patch that works. But I didn't notice any difference in graphic quality really.

i actually was also hoping for more personal experience
ANYway, i am STILL not sure if i NEED to get a black tarot card EVERY level (of course i DO want to see the 'true' ending). . . . . if you get to come back to the level, can't you get it then?

I agree, that's how I feel about PK too.
So now my report. I installed the expansion pack on top of the original game with patch 1.61 already installed. I was getting system crashes right and left when playing so I reinstalled patch 1.61 - the game was still crashing my system. Now mind you, I've been playing HL2, Doom 3, and UT2004 on my computer so I know it's stable. At this point I was considering wiping my system and starting from scratch with a new install of XP and the game.
But instead I decided to uninstall the game and the expansion pack and reinstall it all over without the 1.61 patch. I've played the game past where I'd crashed several times on my last attempt to play. So far so good. Regarding the game, I love the updated physics and the graphics are awesome. The evil clowns totally rock.
Bottom line: you might want to stay away from patch 1.61 if you're going to play the expansion pack, they don't like each other.
ps - patch 1.61 was fine with the original PK game. I played it for several hours with no problems. So if you don't plan on getting the expansion pack, feel free to use the patch.

In general, how's the game performance? I've got a XP mobile at 2.5Ghz, 1gb of RAM, and a 9800P (at XT speeds).
I know you've got a 9800 Appopin and you can run it at 11x8. Any major slowdowns?

Seeing as I ran it before on a Celeron 1.3 with 512 and an R9200 - that'll freakin' blaze.

Yeah, I knew that, but I never foresaw problems like this arising. I kinda thought that BOOH would run at v1.61 since the engine had been previously updated. That's why I reran the patch when I noticed no problems. Too bad that failed.Originally posted by: MercenaryForHire
Reason for that is that v1.61 supercedes BooH - v1.5![]()
That's my plan. I want to see if it looks prettier/plays smoother/doesn't crash. You may be able to install PK + Expansion + Patch in that order, but don't do that until after you beat the game.
