i like it - so far . . . . kill kill kill kill kill kill kill but without the 'sameness' that is Doom iii . . . more FUN - like Serious Sam series.

Wow. I disagree so strongly it isn't funny. I won't argue that DOOM 3 doesn't get repetitive (though it's got a creepiness factor that I absolutely loved) but Painkiller IS the exact same thing, over and over again, from what I can tell, a few levels into it. I just don't feel motivated to play it...it's the most mindless game I've ever played, even counting old-school Doom games.

The only patch I've found that works is the one at gamershell so far. All the others gave an error. Checked dreamcatcher forums, they said same thing. No "official" word on it though. Seems kinda odd.

we disagree . . . that is true . . . . i gave Doom iii a 3.5 out of 10 ("1" for gameplay) it sucked so bad . . . . "repetitive" isn't quite the word. . . . . Creepiness? Try Shalebridge Cradle level in Thief-DS - horror like the Exorcist . . . . Doom iii is to videogame horror what the latest Dawn of the Dead is to horrow movies.

. . . . banal and juvenile. :p

Have you done this?

What i read indicates you need to collect ALL the black tarot cards but you're only able to get 22 cards on the two lowest difficulties. On the Nightmare difficulty you can get the 23rd card from the Prison stage. Once you have all 23 cards you can play the game on Trauma with its Forest stage to get the final card to finish the game on Trauma to see the real ending.

PHEW!

and i got patch 1.35 . . . . no errors and appears to run smother at a higher resolution. :)
(but i haven't been playing that long since i patched it)

c-ya!

Very important, and Correct. Minor spoilers ahead, stop right now if you don't want to read them.

In the first three game difficulties, you skip Forest and go to Hell. In Trauma mode, enemies do not leave souls. Therefore, your manipulation of the Tarot becomes critical. To get the 24th card, you must beat Forest with a BLANK TAROT, no gold or silver cards. Due to the fact that the 24th card is Divine Intervention which SPOILER, I suggest you go for the card.

Eh, I don't think that's very useful as a card to me. Never had that issue. Of course, I don't find many of the cards useful so I rarely switched them.

i'm loving it - MUCH better gameplay than Doom iii - who mentioned that POS in the same breath?

ANYway, i am STILL not sure if i NEED to get a black tarot card EVERY level (of course i DO want to see the 'true' ending). . . . . if you get to come back to the level, can't you get it then?

and M4H's Spoiler link is broke.

edit: Anyone find a working link for the 334MB v1.16 mega patch ('except the 'sign-up' link?)? Is it worth installing over the 92mb v1.35?

His spoiler link works just fine, it's simply well hidden.

Gamershell.com is the only place I found that has a patch that works. But I didn't notice any difference in graphic quality really.

SPOILER is not that well-hidden. :p
i actually was also hoping for more personal experience

anyway, the ONLY difference i see with v1.35 over 1.0 is that my rig can now run at 11x8 (everything on 'hi' and 'on' and 'max' and 2xAA) as smoothly as it did at 10x7. . . . looks great. :)

the Boss after the Cathedral is kinda challenging.
(which means i am 'there' now . . . . just 'insomnia' difficulty)

All right dudes, I just back home from Best Buy with my copy of Battle Out Of Hell and my prebuy of KOTOR 2. I'll let y'all know how I like the Painkiller expansion in a few hours. :D

Okay, gentle refreshing of the mind complete.

Firstly: Wow. You're only THERE? :p :D You've got a feel for the game I assume - now restart in Nightmare so you don't have to redo the first five stages to get to Prison. ;)

ANYway, i am STILL not sure if i NEED to get a black tarot card EVERY level (of course i DO want to see the 'true' ending). . . . . if you get to come back to the level, can't you get it then?

Yes, you can pick up cards at any time. Some later levels and especially boss fights are made MUCH easier if you have the tarot cards though - and some earlier card challenges, like Necrogiant, just aren't possible without them, or a serious stretch of luck. :p

Regarding your current state of being stuck fighting Necrogiant. Don't bother trying to get the card here until you've got a better deck to play from later levels. Get the previous four cards (1-3 isn't really important) and play your hand of Endurance/Haste/Time Bonus. Throw grenade/spike combos (fire a grenade and spike it in midair) at his back for max damage. Once you run out of that, shotgun him in the junk. Save your cards for after the chains come off. Tornado can be dodged by taking cover under one of the monuments - he can't lift you through the roof. Once he's done, hit the cards and get behind him.

Thanks M4H! . . . . got your pm . . . . . i haven't spent enough time with PK as i'd like . . . however, it IS addicting.

BTW, i beat the Big Boss . . . . when he breaks free of the chains it got tricky but i managed to stay close to him, find the ammo and dust him pretty quickly (after a few dozen tries). :p

i also think i am gonna stick with 'insomnia' until i get better at combo shots and learn this tarot better . . . . . it's gonna take me a (long) while to finish this game (completely). . . .. which is not a bad thing since i really like PK (the new games i am waiting for are several months away and FC still isn't in the bargain bin) :)

edit: it really DOES remind me of a darker Serious Sam. The amount of enemies they can throw at you at one time (without slowdowns) is amazing . . . . it's also the kind of game you sometimes have to quickly "eXit" cause your adrenaline is up . . . . .

. .. . awesome!

I agree, that's how I feel about PK too.

So now my report. I installed the expansion pack on top of the original game with patch 1.61 already installed. I was getting system crashes right and left when playing so I reinstalled patch 1.61 - the game was still crashing my system. Now mind you, I've been playing HL2, Doom 3, and UT2004 on my computer so I know it's stable. At this point I was considering wiping my system and starting from scratch with a new install of XP and the game. :(

But instead I decided to uninstall the game and the expansion pack and reinstall it all over without the 1.61 patch. I've played the game past where I'd crashed several times on my last attempt to play. So far so good. Regarding the game, I love the updated physics and the graphics are awesome. The evil clowns totally rock. :D

Bottom line: you might want to stay away from patch 1.61 if you're going to play the expansion pack, they don't like each other.

ps - patch 1.61 was fine with the original PK game. I played it for several hours with no problems. So if you don't plan on getting the expansion pack, feel free to use the patch.

Reason for that is that v1.61 supercedes BooH - v1.5 ;)

You may be able to install PK + Expansion + Patch in that order, but don't do that until after you beat the game. :)

In general, how's the game performance? I've got a XP mobile at 2.5Ghz, 1gb of RAM, and a 9800P (at XT speeds).

I know you've got a 9800 Appopin and you can run it at 11x8. Any major slowdowns?

Seeing as I ran it before on a Celeron 1.3 with 512 and an R9200 - that'll freakin' blaze. :D

Yeah, I knew that, but I never foresaw problems like this arising. I kinda thought that BOOH would run at v1.61 since the engine had been previously updated. That's why I reran the patch when I noticed no problems. Too bad that failed.

That's my plan. I want to see if it looks prettier/plays smoother/doesn't crash. :)

just checked back in . . . . i HAD so damn much to do today (that STILL isn't getting done, plus it's a beautiful day - outside) . . . . BUT i did manage to finish off Swamp Guy with the bubbles and quick (saves and) jumping. :p

:D

No - no slowdowns at all . . . . however, with patch v1.35 i am crashing back to desktop every now and then (it never crashed once before) and - just in case - dropped my O/C down from 3.3Ghz to 3.0Ghz (with no difference in crashing or performance) . . . .

. . . . So my (currently 2.80c @)3.0Ghz P4 + Radeon 9800xt + 1GP PC3500 is doing fine with everything 'on' and 'max' and 'high' plus 2AA, no vsynch at 11x8 is runging GREAT. GREAT physics engine, BTW - i just made a "ladder" of lights fixtures using the PainKiller much like the Gravity Gun (just takes longer).

You ought to just push through malak, it's really fun. The first level of BOOH is pretty creepy, I had to brace myself anew to play. :D
