Thanks for all the tips folks. Got my wife one of these at the beginning of Dec. Then found a great deal on a Lexar CF (128mb so we can also use it to take pics) since I already have a jumpshot cable.. Love having that ability to use the CF like a hard drive...

A quick note for all you guys that decided to purchase the 8mb CF card from crucial.. I purchased one for my Kodak frame however for some reason my frame will not read the crucial CF card (my reader will and I can copy pics to the CF card but when I insert the card into the frame nothing comes up).

I went out and purchased a 16mb CF card from CompUsa for 24.99 and it works now. Dunno if I got a dud from Crucial or what.. anyone else get the card from crucial and have any results?

Is there any way to actually create EXIF data for pictures that never had it to begin with? Thanks.

Yep, read my earlier posts in this thread for details.

Ah thanks. Just saw that. Does anyone know if Ulead PhotoExplorer 7 Pro can add EXIF data like Photo Studio (freeware)? Thanks again.

<< you might check to make sure the 'kodak etched' one isn't a networked one. just guessing though. >>

Yeah.. I checked them out as soon as I got them. Don't want to cause any problems for the receivers. They were both non-network versions.

I just got the two I ordered. Although the are working, one of the Frames came in a box that was already opened. :( This is the second time for me that an order from the Geek's has arrived in a condition other than what was stated on their web site. This really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Would be hard to tell if they were already opened or not. Mine came in plain brown box with frame and power brick in simple plastic bags. Both times that I've dealt with Compgeeks customer service (once for a defective product and once for a hung order), its been a very pleasant experience (aside from the non toll-free number).

I also got one etched and one normal frame. Both are non-networked.

I know how you feel about getting a "new" toy which is really used. I got one of those $50 Viao wireless lan PC Cards at Compusa, and it was obviously used when I got home and opened it. The guy who had it before had scribbled his AP code number on a post-it note he left in the box, and he forgot to put the CD in a sleeve. Plus he had grubby fingers leaving his smudges all over the nice clean plastic! EEWWW. I think I will take it back for a refund. But you know, Compusa will put it back on the shelf for some other schmuck to buy. At least at BB they mark the item as an open box so you know what you're getting.

By law they're required to mark "open box" items as such--even Fry's knows that. You should take it back and tell them you want a price adjustment since the item they sold you wasn't new.

On a somewhat unrelated note I wanted to post that I got two of these frames. Strangely one works with my 340mb microdrive while the other does not. They both appear to be the same in every respect; my only guess for this is that the chip supplying the voltage to the CF slot is weaker on one as the microdrive takes a lot of power to spin up. Both work with my new normal CF card however. Just fyi for any other microdrive users or an explanation for the guy who was having problems with his crucial cf card.

sweet! just got mine in and LOVING it. Now I gotta get a CF card/reader so I can actually load my own pictures and not be stuck with these pre-laoded beatuiful people =)

I took out the plastic piece as recommended... makes it 100% brighter and more crisp! I' sure its in ther as anti-glare/scratch and protection. I think I'll skip down to the local hardware store and have a new piece of CLEAR plastic cut-to-fit.

Suggestion/Dream/Christmas wish:

I've been wanting a digital frame for a long time, but never really found one that appealed 100% to me. The Kodak comes close... ~90%. Ideally wouln't it be FANTASTIC if somebody made a networked version one of these, that could hooke up into your local home-lan and pulls pictures directly off your server or PCs (via shared dirs).
1 year ago I purchased a Turtle-Beach AudioTron that does just that with mp3's and its the greattest piece of hardware I have EVER bought... I just wish I could direclty synch this picture frame up to my server and have it draw pictures directly over the LAN....

Arggh!! KODAK hear me please!

:D Back in stock now, but just over a dozen left.

So, has anyone had success/failure with the 8 MB Crucial CF? How about other capacity cards from them?

TIA

I have a few questions for the Experts here at Anandtech regarding the Kodak Smart Picture Frame and the Mr. Flash 5 in 1 USB Reader/Writer:

1. For the people who removed the plastic on the frame, what size is need to replace the plastic with a clear piece of plastic?

2. For the people who are using the Mr. Flash 5 in 1, is an adapter needed to read a Sandisk compact flash card?

I bought the Smart Picture Frame, Mr. Flash 5 in 1, and a 32MB compact flash card for my stepson for Christmas and I was just wanting to make sure nothing else is needed for him to be able to use the picture frame.

Thanks, Everyone, for your help.

I purchased the 8mb Crucial compactflash card and it works great!

Ironically, I borrowed a Canon 8mb card to try before the Crucial card arrived, and I had the same problem that is being described. I could copy to the card from my computer, but the frame could not find any pictures.

Thanks, Homerboy!!

Now, Anyone, on the Mr. Flash 5 in 1 question. Is an adapter needed to read a compact flash card on the Mr. Flash 5 in 1 reader?

Thanks again for your help.

No adapter is required for the Mr. Flash 5 in 1 reader. It is a standard Type II Compact Flash slot. Meaning it will take both type I (most flash cards) and Type II (IBM microdrives).
