I also learned the hard way that they do not ship on time. I reordered this item a couple of times and it took at least 2 days before they shipped each order. I had to ship the orders 2nd day just to make sure I got it in a reasonable amount of time.

When my second order was held up (placed too close to the first one so the computer thought it was a double hit), I called and was upgraded to 2nd day air for free. I thought that their customer service was very good overall. Only downside was the lack of a toll-free number, but the wait was minimal.

I think CompGeeks has the WORST customer service I've ever seen. And I order from a lot of low budget places (you'd never guess, right?)

I ordered on 12/6

12/7 got an e-mail - couldn't verify my shipping address.

12/7 - called my CC company, verified that they listed my CC address (I knew they did; called to make sure it was still there)

12/7 - called CompGeeks - told that they would verify again.

12/10 - called CompGeeks again, after receiving an e-mail saying they couldn't verify. Told them that wasn't the case, and to keep me on the line while they verified. They wouldn't do it - so they told me they'd call me back if they had an issue.

12/12 - received an e-mail from CompGeeks - my CC was verified - it "would ship ASAP" (their words, in the e-mail)

12/14 - no confirmation - guessing that it had shipped, and would be here in time for Christmas (I told the rep that it was a gift; they wouldn't upgrade me for free, but assured me it would get out of there).

12/20 - received e-mail from UPS - package shipped on 12/20, to arrive on 1/2/02

I sent CompGeeks an e-mail telling them it was a gift, and it had to be here by Christmas - and that I was extremely disappointed in their customer service. Their response? "Well, we don't ship to addresses that we can't verify". When I told them in a response that the damn CC number had verified the week before, and the package would supposedly ship, in their words, ASAP - they didn't respond.

But they did send a sarcastic 'Oh Yeah - Happy Holidays' e-mail - I saved it, because I figure it'll make an interesting Better Business Bureau complaint.

Never again - I'd rather pay more and not be treated like an ass.

With respect to these coming back into stock, I called them up and verify that the orders would go through and was greeted by a very rude lady. She said, "Did you read the instructions on the website?" I said that I had and was confused what the problem was. She said that all orders placed and not shipped before they closed would be automatically cancelled b/c of inventory issues. I then asked if she had read the instructions on the website. She huffed and abrubtly put me on hold. About 10 min. later, she came back on all nice and said the order would go through w/o a problem. =P

quick question, do I need to get a compact flash card reader or can I just drop in a cf card from my canon s110 and the pictures will show. Thanks in advance.

I own ACDSee 4.1 and don't want to spend the money on Ulead's product. Couldn't I just batch resize in ACDSee and then batch add EXIF data with Photo Studio (free)? Thanks.

To answer my own question, yes. Or, if you don't own ACDSee, then you could batch resize with IrFanView and then insert EXIF with Photo Studio. It takes about 10 seconds. Now, does anyone have a file name randomizer (non-unix)?

Geeks does suck in customer service and they are very slow. I ordered the frame on Sun morning a sprung for 2-day shipping, they say all orders placed before 10am ship the same day so I thought I should have it by Wed. They never even shipped it till Wed and I got it Fri, I emailed them to complain it took them 2-days to reply and they blamed it on UPS for not picking it up even though their system and by the tracking number it wasn't ready to go until Wed. All I wanted was a credit for the 2-day air ($4). Great product though, even though I got one that was opened like some others (the tape was cut on the box), maybe they started checking for network versions?? If you didn't get one, get it!! It's a great toy!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

Incidentally, I was at Costco last night and they are selling
a Kodak bundle (with a colorful retail box, not some makeshift thing)
that includes some Kodak digital camera with "docking station" plus
this digital picture frame for around $600 (and there's a $50 rebate).
I wasn't familiar with the camera, so I don't know what that works
out to for the camera if you subtract the normal sale price of the
camera from the total...

But it looks like Kodak hasn't yet given up on this frame as a
retail item...Perhaps. Or perhaps they knocked off these boxes for
Costco to get rid of additional inventory as a one-off?

In case anyone is interested....

If your digital camera has a Smartmedia card you can order this adapter and it will work just fine. I tested it myself and it works perfect.

On the adapter, note that it will support only up to 32MB Smartmedia, which isn't much these days. I believe I have seen other makes of the same device which did not have this limitation, but I can't recall the exact details right now.

This is true. I looked all over the place for this type of card and the only one I found was from Pretec. A 32 MB card will still hold over 200 pictures which is fine with me, plus I couldnt afford to keep looking with X-mas coming and all. Its a present for the wife :)

Unless you have a crummy low end digital camera that won't take
pix with a resolution > 640x480 you don't want to pop the card
right from the camera to the frame, because if you use higher res
photos on the frame you have to wait 15 seconds or so for them
to get downsized by the frame...Much better to do that on your
PC and then load the pics into the card.

I used the free Adobe PhotoDeluxe Business Edition software that came with my Nikon 990 last year to one-step re-size the digpics to 640X480 or close to it (I usually crop and edit my photos first).

Transferred them to my CF card and onto the frame without a problem.

BTW - I ordered three frames from Geeks last week, got the credit card authorization error e-mail, called them and it was resolved immediately, frames were shipped same day - arrived UPS Ground in 4 business days.

Overall, a great deal...happy holidays guys

<< I used the free Adobe PhotoDeluxe Business Edition software... >>

Do you get the thumbnail images in the Frame after resizing with this software? Thanks.

No sorry, I did not check on the thumbnails, I had a few with un-retouched pics directly from my Nikon 990, but those altered in PhotoDeluxe had no thumbnails.

I used a shareware program called Eyebatch and it works great!
Select all the pictures, say you want to convert to 640x480 and press "run"..
very simple, and it keeps the EXIF info (need to check some kind of box for this).

And CompGeeks has 1573 left.. plenty..

This frame looks good. It says it can store up to 36 pictures. What resolution would that be at?

I think I've read most or all of this thread, but don't recall anyone mentioning this peculiar recommendation from Kodak's FAQ webpage for this frame:

<< Additionally, reformat any pictures you intend to use with the Non-Networked KODAK Smart Picture Frame to a higher resolution than 640 x 480 (at least 1280 x 960 suggested). If you reformat to 640 x 480 and then try to display the picture from a COMPACTFLASH Card with the Non-Networked KODAK Smart Picture Frame, the Frame will compress the picture further. This has to do with coding added by the PHOTOSHOP application to the picture file. Once the picture is compressed below 640 x 480, the Non-Networked KODAK Smart Picture Frame may not display it. >>

Well, the 125 photos on my CompactFlash were all cropped to 640 x 480 in Photoshop Elements, and they all seem to look fine on the frame. Anyone seeing any trouble? Would there be any other conceivable advantage to forcing the frame to downsize the images? Seems to me it would just slow down the display and chew up space on the CF card...

OK, after dumping 400+ pics onto a CF card (it wouldn't let me put more than 255 in a directory), I have pretty much figured out that it displays based on TIME of file, not name. I want my vacation pics slideshowing in ORDER, dangit!

Does anyone know of a Winblows util that will go through a directory, take the files in NAME order, and touch them with new date/time in that order? I can't imagine having to do it by hand, but I will if necessary.

Hmmmm, I wonder if you touch all of them with the same date/time, whether it would then sort on filename?
