I really hope there are some governors and Dems figuring out a secession plan to have in place. There is power in numbers, and this may actually have to happen.

The firings are so chaotic they have no clue who they are firing:

(which is really scary)
Fucking around and accidentally firing the people who oversee our nuclear arsenal because you don’t even know who you are firing is exactly the kind of crack policy that makes America great.

@Greenman I can certainly see why you voted for this. No Democrat would have made that bold policy choice.

For those who didn’t know:

Taliban don't need no stinking science.
Handmaid's Tale is a future episode.

Before someone says "we already are".

It appears, that all you have to do is threaten judges with impeachment and they will cave, issuing a ruling that in itself goes against what the judge's very explanation says in the opinion. His opinion pretty much says that such federal agencies have the authority to access such information... but DOGE is not an agency, which counters the ruling he made with his own words. We are totally fucked in this country when our judges refuse to block illegal and unconstitutional actions, specially when their own words say the opposite of what they ruled. Not only do we have a SCOTUS that issues Calvin Ball rulings, we now have other federal judges doing it to, in what appears to be to protect their own interests and not the rule of law, the constitution, or the people of this country.

Imagine the defense secretary talking about fighting a large swath of his own citizens.

So, the so called "patriot" who is COVERED with tattoos of the constitution and US flag doesn't realize that the American Revolution was started by a bunch of guys who VALUED their RIGHT to representation under English Law?!? That it was their BELIEF in those VALUES that gave them the idea they could take on the largest military in the world?

Yeah, that seems about right for this administration.

If Europe spent 5% of GDP on defense they are not even going to answer the phone when the US calls anymore. Wouldn't need to.
It's hard to spend 5% indefinitely, but once the whole of Europe adopts a common weapons structure, not 10 types of tanks, 10 troop carriers etc and finally gets a unitary army core, then yes, it's gonna be self sufficient. No close enemy would ever be able to stand up to that, unless USA turns Command and Conquer

So what is going to be the longer term effect of this indiscriminate, apparently rather random, downsizing of the Federal workforce? That they are firing every probationer (becuase, I guess, that gets round employment protection laws?) surely means there are going to be growing staff shortages across the entire Federal government? I would imagine that would accelerate over time as the increased workloads would lead to more older staff taking retirement (especially with these weird dodgy 'volunteer to quit' incentive schemes they are also offering), and thus the lack of staff would only get worse.

What puzzles me is that it appears to be pretty indiscriminate and untargetted, meaning there are going to be staffing problems in areas like "looking after nuclear materials and keeping them out of the hands of terrorists" as well as "collecting plutocrats' taxes" and "watching out for dodgy financial scams". It's that indiscriminate aspect of it that I don't get. Surely even Musk and his fellow plutocrats need some parts of government to be functional?

It's like some wild leap of neoliberal faith, that the market/private sector will always provide, so you just remove the government services and trust in God/The Private Sector, to step up and deal with the next pandemic, say. Or is there some other gameplan here, some 4d chess move that I'm missing?

yes

Glad I live 3/4 of a mile from airstrips capable of launching long range nuclear bombers so I can be effectively strapped to the bomb once Trump gets us into World War III.

How Big Does Donald Trump Think Greenland Is?

Discussing his interest in acquiring the Arctic territory, Trump previously explained: “I love maps. And I always said, ‘Look at the size of this. It’s massive.’ That should be part of the United States.”

Yet many commentators have pointed out what any true map-lover knows: Greenland is not actually as big as it appears on most maps. The Mercator projection, originally designed by a 16th century cartographer, stretches the northern and southern latitudes in order to plot the round earth on a flat surface. As a result, it exaggerates the size of the Northern Hemisphere and notoriously makes Greenland appear larger than Africa. In reality, Africa is 14 times larger.

Err Greenland is 2M sq km while USA is 9M sq km. Your superimposition is incorrect.
