From the article:
It's unclear whether other companies have also witnessed a rise in downloads, and it's worth noting that some of Opera's sudden traffic may stem from yesterday's major release of version 10.50. Hopefully Mozilla and others will step forward with some statistics in the near future.

Gee ya think?

that's the point, you don't have to buy, download or install anything else. people will do what is easiest whether it's good or bad. with 90+% PCs running windows, MS does have a monoply, whether you want to admit it or not.

I must be an idiot, because I don't see how giving somebody something for free is exactly a monopoly.

Sure more options are better. I agree, its better to get 90% of PCs not all using IE, but I don't see why Microsoft should be forced to do that.

If it's a monopoly, it's because computer users decided to make it one by using IE. Just providing the software doesn't make it a monopoly.

Opera are such douchbags, they went and whined to the EU government and said "Microsoft gives IE for free and PEOPLE USE IT, it's NOT FAIR!" *stamps foot. And the EU government, always out to benefit big business wherever it can also screw the consumer, forced Microsoft to change it's OS to accommodate Opera.

What pisses me off the most is now somebody has to decide what browser's are worthy of being on the list. That seems even more unfair.

Why isn't the Leros Browser on the Microsoft list but those 5 are? UNFAIR!

Its not like you have to buy IE if you buy Windows. They're giving you something for free.

This is like Ford giving you a free cup holder with your Ford car and being forced to offer you free cup holders from other companies.

lol. My new sig.

I exclusively use firefox. Almost everyone I know uses firefox. I thought almost everyone used firefox until I saw a few people use IE the other day. Amazing.

First thing I do after a fresh install is use IE to download firefox, then uninstall IE. :p

Its a funny topic. I say that I don't think Microsoft should be forced to offer other browsers and most people argue with me.

I don't know why it's a big deal. I don't have any personal allegiance to any of the browsers. I try out each and every one of the major ones each time they make a significant update. And lately, I have been leaning towards Chrome. But that could change at anytime.
Hell, for a while, I tried out Flock.

Most people don't even know what IE or Firefox is. They don't even know what a browser is. They just click that "internet" button.

I tried opera once, years ago, when it had the banner thing on it. I was probably running 640x480 then too.

Fuck that noise. They can take their proprietary bullshit and suck it.

the eu is full of sh*t. just look at italy going after google. the eu is trying to after google the same way as they went after ms. i'd like to see them force bmw and benz to give you a stereo system ballot since its not fair they bundle systems in their cars:p
its a load of sh*t really, if you aren't smart enough to download your own browser, then thats your own fault. if ms had actually blocked installation or download of alternate browser they would have a point, but that never happened.

That's plain bull. Nobody cares that MS provides IE for free. The issue is that it's bundled with the OS that 90% of the world runs, so by default it's going to have the vast majority of market share. That stifles innovation and other browser development.

The approach of not having a browser 'built in', but allowing the user to select which browser they want when they first use windows makes each browser compete in the market, which is good for all of us.

Been using Opera since 7.5. I LOVE 10.5. Works great and the tabs are awesome. I don't think I could go without mouse gestures, I find myself swiping left in explorer all the time. 10.5 sees a huge improvement in javascript speed.

I forget, just how many times was Microsoft convicted of breaking the law to destroy Netscape and other companies it considered a threat to its monopoly?

I loved Opera but it caused my screen to get all garbled randomly - artifacts and I can't even see the mouse cursor anymore. It would only happen during Opera sessions and nothing else, including hours of gaming. I've since gone to FF and it hasn't happened either... but FF takes addons to do what I like which Opera does out of the box... I think they released a new version recently... I'll give it another go.
