yea yea I get all the hidden messages.... advertising in our lives, yada yada yada...

if you like this movie, please also state your age... I want to know if there is a connection between people who like the movie and the age of the people who like it..

my theory is that young people tend to like the extremetity and the values presented in this movie (anti establishment, life is full of pain, etc etc)

I like it because only intelligent people enjoyed it.

Please enlighten us "stupid" people...

20.

It's only the greatest movie ever. To me, it's not so much about anti-establishment as it is about personal enlightenment. Anyway, aside from the script (Chuck Palahniuk is my favorite author and Jim Uhls did an excellent job with the screenplay), the movie itself is one of - if not THE - most well-made film I have ever seen. Every scene is carefully crafted and each line of dialogue adds to the film as a whole. There are plenty of special effects eye candy too - the IKEA sequence is just damn cool. The acting was superb as well- Ed Norton is the perfect actor for the role of Jack, and of course, there's the mindfvck at the end.

Great plot.
Great producing/directing.
Great effects.
Great acting.
Great movie.

I am 35, and I thought that Fight Club was a brilliant movie. It had a lot to say on different levels, and did so in a highly unconventional manner. My favorite part was the narration throughout the film.

It was on cable some years ago which means I had the opportunity to watch it as many times as I wanted and tape it too. I thought the scene where Norton's boss tries to fire him was funny. And I found Helena Bonham Carter to be attractive in an odd way. My memory of the rest of the movie is a pretty much blank because I did not watch it.

Why were they standing around waiting to hit each other?

Great movie, I'm 22 and I find the way fight club is usually received is people either Love it or Hate it. I like it becuase it's a very different type of movie from the norm. My theory is older people tend to not like it because they've compeletly accepted reality and can't imagine anarchy... a fun what if movie. ;)

the whole use of violence to gauge just how far men will go to break away from the roles that have been forced upon them by soceity served as both entertaining and a means to add shock value to drive the message home. The use of Man Tits in the movie was also done well, I mean come on an ex bodybuilder, who was so infatuated/deteremined to showing his masuclinity that he turns to steriods which in turn steal the masculinty he so longs for say goes a long way in the metaphor department.

You doubt someone's ability to create an increadibly loyal army? Who do you think is blowing themselves up in Israel? ;)

Also, 24 and liked it. The twist at the end clinched it. :D

I think Fight Club is in many ways like Memento - Love it or hate it.

I'll agree that there is probably an age/generation gap between the two opinions. I certainly can't see my grandparents enjoying the movie.

21 or so when I saw it.. I hated the movie.. it's made with great skill but it's message doesn't even agree with itself and the plot twist is just insane and silly,..

**spoiler**

was here really talking to himself the entire movie and no one noticed? he shared a beer with himself?? he was in the kitchen and having sex at the same time? that's not how multiple personality disorder works! one personality does not chill in the kitchen while the other is watching the game in the den!

**.end**

also, the movie has this silly leftist message - our capitalistic society and culture drives men into being angry, shallow beasts desperate for an outlet.. it trashes commercial culture/etc. but then, by proving that tyler was in fact wrong and an extremist, cancels out it's own message.. if the whole movie agreed with tyler then why did ed norton have to "kill" him? i don't know.. i hated the movie.. it was over rated and stupid teen males love the movie..

Without actually having seen the movie, I can take a guess as to who would like and why. I can also take a guess as to who would have made it and why.
It all has to do with nature, dude. You see, in us all, is this thing called the 'survival of the fittest' instinct that we are born with. That is the 'nature' part of us. Then society gets a hold of us and molds us to it's views which run counter to nature. In the wild, the stronger, faster and meaner survive because that's just the way it is. Unfortunately, intelligence also plays a role and that survival and as a concequence, those are the genes that get passed and culled through each succeeded generation. We, as a species, are the end result of nature gone wild. We, as a species, are an abberration of nature, a fluke of inbalance where intelligence has overridden the other instincts into extinction, or not totally.
You see, in nature, intelligence, strength, speed and meanness are all balanced. When you are born, you are born with these qualities in a much more balanced fashion. It is through the process of conditioning that society culls the other qualities out of you. The older you get, the more conditioned you are and the less likely that, as a 'valued member of society' or 'upstanding citizen' you are to entertain thoughts or exerts actions that violate the rules of what a civilized person would do.
There is a constant battle raging inside each one of us. You see 'nature' wants to bring you into its fold. It MUST bring you into its fold because it cannot survive if it's rules are violated. Unfortunately, if it is to survive, then life as we know it must perish. Nature has been around much, much longer that we have. It existed before we did. It is what gave us life. Now, one of it's members is retaliating against it. A child gone wild. We want to live without nature's
rules. We want to use our intelligence to solve all our problems. Yet, intelligence is the one quality that is going to doom us into non-existence.
Do you ever wonder why an aging, overweight, physically unfit human being would command salaries that are outrageous? How about a fast, strong, obviously slow thinker commanding millions? Just the very thought of using 'money' to equate money with worthiness. Society teaches us that the more money, influence and prestige we can attain, the better we are as it's members. That's the imbalance that a civilized society imparts on it's members. In nature, a golf 'pro' or a football 'pro' would not survive for long. Money would mean nothing to nature. It is whether you can go out and kill for survival. Not just other members of your species, but other species in general. That is what keeps members of nature fit, the exercise you get while hunting and to get ready for the hunt, stamina, speed, strength and yes, intelligence. Not many of us would survive in nature. We are all overweight, asthmatic and weak. Would a basketball 'pro' survive? Would an Indy 500 winner? Those that would survive would be the violent, strong, and fit...ie, our convicts that we have jailed because they have allowed nature to control them for a fleeting moment, some, all their lives. Some have done something that society will not let them forget for their entire lives, ostricized by it.
Thus, if people can't live out their desires, ie. nature, and exist in society, they channel their aggression 'nature' into other forms of existence. This is mainly done through movies, video games, and spectator sports. So, the people that made this Fight Club movie, were doing so to let out their natural violence and aggression. It, in general, will appeal to the younger audience that society has not beaten nature out of, through conditioning. It will not appeal to the older, more conditioned audience that makes up society because it will go against all that violates it's existence. People come in all flavors, so some become aclimated to society's norms at an early age and they will not like this movie, others who have a wild streak in them or rebel against society will like this movie.
I think I have bored you enough with these rambling thoughts. Religion also has a role in society, but that's a different thread, although not entirely.

Later,
Martin

37. I hear ya, it's a weak movie, although I disagree with your reasons. What I hated about it was there was *1* plot twist, smack dab in the middle of the movie! After that it was a series of Norton's character having the truth stare him in the face without him realizing it. Three quarters of the way through I was having fits over the guys inability to comprehend the truth, it was worse than watching a cheesy Horror flick where the characters make stupid decisions that ultimately lead to their death. As far as I'm concerned the movie was finished by the midpoint, up until then I thought it was pretty good though.

I saw it when I was maybe 17 or so.. and I thought it was crappy. I saw it recently (I'm 21 now) and I still think it is crappy. I can't understand why anyone would think it's a good movie.

They blow up the buildings at the end.. but why? I already know the reason the movie gives.. but I am not satisfied. The whole movie was stupid and frustrating.

I'm 19 and saw it when I was 18. I thought it was one of the most pointlessly violent movies I've ever seen, and disliked it very much. The whole idea of having the love story built into the movie was moronic. It was as if they were trying to take a mediocre movie and make it appeal to EVERYONE, instead of people who would like it simply for the violence.

FightClub is the stupidest fvcking movie. Let me get this straight, you believe that a person standing out in the street, beating himself up, would inspire people to create a "Fight Club?" Give me a fvcking break. That movie was garbage, and the "big twist" at the end made the movie worthless.

This reminds me of people raving over another crappy movie, Independence Day. Another sh!t movie that people loved.

I liked it, but I liked the book a lot better. The ending was just perfect in the book. The movie's ending was a cop-out.

21, liked it for the story. I'm not a big fan of anti-establishment anarchists, but I let that one pass - just this one time =). I read the novel, too, but found it too gritty for my taste. Fan of Ed Norton, although I liked American History X better.

To each his/her own.

23 and I liked it. You need the see that movie more than once. I have plenty of friends who watched it only once and totally misunderstood it. I myself didn't like it until I saw it the second time.
