RE: Seattle’s passing game.

The short summary: Wilson is struggling (but finding ways to win) but it is easy to see why he is struggling: Seattle’s OL is horrible at pass blocking (e.g. against the Rams, who had 1 sack all season, gave up 3 sacks in 5 plays!), the pedestrian receivers from 2013 lost Tate and Harvin with no impact additions, and they are on their 4th string TE. Play calling has been bad (even players not names Harvin complaining). And as much as Harvin was a head case (?) the pass game was a LOT better with him on the team.

Now read on if you like statistics and breakdown from someone who watches the games:

It was nice to see the Seattle Offensive Coordinator (Darrel Bevell) stick with the run the last couple weeks. Maybe lost in the 350 yard rushing game is how bad the Seattle pass game has been the last 4 weeks. What happened 5 weeks ago? Bye-bye Harvin. Passing game should have been better, right, if Harvin was such an issue?

Comparing Seattle’s first 5 games to the last 4 games:

Wilson’s TD-to-INT ratio dropped from 4:1 (Great! 8TD to 2INT) to 1:1 (Bad! 3TD to 3INT—this is bad even for a backup).

Passer rating has dropped from 101.0 (average of the rating for the first 5 games; Top10 rating) all the way down to 76.3 (bad!).

Wilson Completion Percentage dropped from 66.2% (Top 10) to 58.3% (Bottom 5 among league starters season average). Pete Carrol wanted Wilson to hit 70% this year and he started off well (near 705 first 4 games) but the last 4 games he has dropped off. Wilson’s last 4 games only edge out the season percentage for the unspectacular performances by Cam Newton (58.1—hurt and no receivers), Geno Smith (56.2—benched), Mike Glennon (57.6—benched). A lot of QBs, on middling teams or middling QBs, are doing a bit better (Blake Bortles 63.3, Austin Davis 63.4, Kirk Cousins 61.8, Teddy Bridgewater 60.4, Derek Carr 61.1, Brian Hoyer 58.5, Colin Kaepernick 61.9).

What happened after week 5?

As everyone knows Seattle traded Percy Harvin.

It would be easy to blame this all on injuries but to counter that look at who Seattle faced the first 5 weeks versus who they faced the last 4 weeks.

5 Games With Percy: Passer Rating of 101.0, 978 yards (196 ypg), 8 TD, 2 INT, 66.2% completion (92/139), 7.04 ypa Opponents in this 5 game stretch? 4 teams in the hunt for the playoffs (Denver, San Diego, Green Bay, Dallas) and Washington

4 Games Without Percy: Passer Rating of 76.3, 863 yards (215 ypg), 3 TD, 3 INT, 58.3% completion (70/120), 7.19 ypa Opponents in this 4 game stretch? Bottom Feeders Oakland (0 wins), St. Louis (2 wins), Giants (3 wins), and Carolina.

Percy obviously did something (or a lot of somethings!) to motivate the trade. You have to put that on Harvin. But they obviously weren’t using him right (less than 2 weeks @ NY Jets and he had 120 yards receiving; when a player can drop a bill after 2 weeks of practice with a completely new team you know they have talent that can be used), Seattle had a predictable screen game because they rarely took Harvin down field (making screens less effective which, even if you buy the argument Harvin cannot run routes (I don't buy this from watching him) you still need to keep teams honest), and even when he was only used as a decoy (which helped the team) he provided hidden net yards (e.g. teams kicking the ball out of bounds). And even his stats are misleading; e.g. the 3 called back TDs against Washington. Or, for example, the screen plays were sooo bad Harvin was getting contact on average <2 yards after the catch on screens which is poor design (It was so bad against the NYG this weekend Doug Baldwin yelled at the OC and said NO MORE SCREENS!) Seattle did a horrible job executing screens with Harvin as DBs didn’t have to respect him going down field and Seattle was so predictable in the bunch formations (screen to Harvin!) We weren’t seeing fake screens and then deep tosses to the receivers faking blocks or using the natural pick action of the bunch to fake a screen and then have Harvin release deep or to the outside.

Seattle fans/local media have been quick to blame Harvin for so many issues they overlook how bad pass protection has been (contra the slogan “Cable can turn bums into Pro Bowlers” when the line has 2x first rounders and 2x second rounders) and have forgotten had bad play calling was in the SD and DAL games. RE: Coaching. It isn't just how the OC used Harvin and fed (or starved) Lynch. Seattle's special teams coaching was a dumpster fire against the Rams when they gave up a punt return for a TD, a 75+ yard KO return, and an obvious Punt fake on 4th and 3. Seattle lost that game after Wilson put up 300 yards passing and 100 yards rushing. And the team still struggled to turn red zone chances into TDs. Way too many FGs.

The bottom line is everyone thought the 2013 receivers were pedestrian. Now take out Tate and Rice, take away Harvin, and take away the top 2 TE (Zach Miller and Anthony McCoy) and add to non-impact rookies and that is what the 2014 receivers look like. Add in a minus-offensive pass blocking line with Wilson pressured >40% of the time. Whatever the issues were/weren’t the stats indicate Seattle was much better passing game with Harvin. The eye test says the guys they have now are not very good. Wilson has a rookie (Richardson) who hasn’t figured out he needs to box out the defender (one pick against NYG) and the reminder that as nifty as Doug Baldwin he isn’t Tate, or even Harvin, when it comes to high pointing the ball. Baldwin is a good complimentary receiver, but not an X or #1. Not to mention Baldwin has had a ton of drops this year when he had only 2 last year. If 2013 receivers were pedestrians then the 2014 group are geriatrics or on life support. As for Wilson, he is still balling and finding ways to win but this year’s Seattle offense has very deep flaws. Unless Richardson and Norward emerge as impact rookies and Miller returns (ugh, they are on their 4th string TE with Miller, Anthony McCoy, and Luke Willson out) Seattle will be even more one dimensional than last years team on offense--and with a defense who took a step back (i.e. good not great) and then lost key starters for stretches (Chancellor, Wagner, Mebane, Maxwell, Lane, Malcolm Smith, etc.)

With 2x games vs. San Fran, 2x vs. Arizona, and games away at KC and Philly we will know by Week 17 if Seattle is a pretender or contender this year. Tough strength of schedule this year so if they make the playoffs no one can say they didn’t earn it.

In honor of two RG3 threads in two weeks. We have two RG3's in one picture. Robert Griffin the third, and Rex Grossman the third. :awe:

The sad part is at this point you're not even sure which RG3 will have the better career when it's all said and done.

CJ won't be 30 until the start of next season and is still in top form. It was only 2 seasons ago he almost hit 2,000 receiving yards. He also has zero on and off field issues, as far as I'm aware of.

Suh is 2 years younger (more like 1 and a half, as he is turing 28 in January) and has issues on field. He has cleaned them up this season, but he has had problems with his style of play.

Suh could be argued to be a top 10 DT, but nobody can argue Megatron is not a the number 1 receiver in the game.

I don't know - if you had the same QB throwing to them, who do you take out of this list?

Calvin Johnson
Julio Jones
Demarius Thomas
Dez Bryant
AJ Green
Brandon Marshall
Antonio Brown
Vincent Jackson
DeSean Jackson
Andre Johnson
Larry Fitzgerald
Percy Harvin

Honestly, this year - who wouldn't go with Antonio Brown? But, if you had PFM or Brady throwing to all of them, is CJ really that far ahead?

Just a honest question.

Great analysis. It tells you just how good Wilson is when he can eke out six wins so far with this bunch. Not to mention Beast Mode who can still rumble for big yards when the OL gives him even the appearance of blocking.

I'd remove Percy, and maybe DeSean Jackson. And then, let's look at franchise WRs, we get Johnson the lesser, Fitz, and Vincent Jackson as being too old (all 31+). What's left?

Megatron
Marshall
Thomas
Bryant
Green and
Brown

Brown is good, but he is too small for a lot of endzone stuff and frankly, disappointing in his speed (at least, judging purely on his 40 time). That leaves the rest, with Dez the shortest at 6'2. And from them, I'd take CJ followed by Dez, Thomas, or Jones depending on which would take less money.

Putting Andre Johnson aside (33), any chance Seattle could get Marshall (30), V. Jackson (31), or Larry Fitzgerald (31) in the offseason? Who would be the best fit/is aging the best in regards to performance/injury? Fitz's numbers have been down and is no longer the beast he was at 25 but imo his stat decline were a product of his QBs in 2012-2013. Marshall has been banged up a little (?) and Jackson is hard to judge as the team/QB situation has been bad (Tampa Bay).

I wonder how Marshall would feel moving from Cutler to Wilson. His stats would take a dive but the QB personalities are night and day.

Ps- A healthy Megatron > everyone but I am afraid injuries are catching up to him. I hope note--he is awesome to watch.

Man, if that's the case then Alex Smith should be inducted into the Hall of Fame immediately.

This is precisely why we signed Golden Tate, and drafted Ebron (whose looking like a waste of a 10th pick) The days of CJ making 122 catches really should be over with and he takes a beating when that happens.

The TNF game should be interesting to watch. I think that will be a close game.

IMHO the game of the week has to be NE@Indy, Pat's have to win out against some quality teams to maintain HFA over the Broncos, I don't see the Broncos losing anymore games and having to face them in the playoff's in Denver is a death sentence, Indy knows too and has no desire to travel to Foxborough in a playoff setting so this game is shaping up to be a battle. Luck could be as hard to play against as PM due to his legs, both teams coming off a bye..

Eagles-Pack could be interesting as well. I'll hold out a small chance for Bill-Dolphins being a decent game, but certainly not going to hold my breath.

Yeah that could be a good one. Indy hasn't looked consistent enough to give me a whole lot of confidence in putting up a good fight if NE brings it, but playing at home will help.

Just came across this, angry Bears fans have issued death threats to coach Trestman's daughters after another blow-out loss to GB. Bear's fan's now have sunken to a lower point than Philly, yea, I'm sure he goes over the game plans with his kids every week.. http://deadspin.com/twitter-users-harass-marc-trestmans-daughters-after-bea-1657009542

saw that yesterday. Trolls are the scurge of society and I would like to personally meet every single person that threatened those kids face to face and introduce them to Dick Butkis

We should learn alot about the colts when they play NE. Seems to me Superbowl goes trough there this year until someone proves them otherwise. Seattle has uncrowned themselves and the Cowgirls came back down to earth though I think GB should give them a run for their money

I mean has the coach done THAT bad of a job or is he just the punching bag for a team of athletes that just don't give a fuck?. I'm not qualified to answer that question but the finger-pointing should start at whoever thought Jay Cutler was a 19 mil/year QB and maybe the D coordinator, the secondary get's lighten up on a weekly basis like a Tiki-torch..

Bears made a mistake signing Cutlet long term. I advocated letting him take the franchise tag one more year but the team and a bunch of others this year are banking on a bigger cap within the next two years. His contract really was a 3 year 50 million dollar deal with how the money was allocated and the bears new they cap space that year so they front loaded it making him the highest paid player in the league this year.

Trestman isnt the problem this year. The defence has not getten better and aging vets who were paid alot of money are seriously underperforming. The youngsters outside of Mcllelan have played ok but Briggs and Jennings and DJ williams and Allen all have done NOTHING but fall down and give up big plays.

It was Briggs fault that Nelson was open because he called the coverage change too late and the call didnt get out to the whole team. He did the same thing hanging Conte out to dry in the packers game last year and Conte never threw blame to Briggs. Briggs needs a benching stat and Allen needs to go into rotation get some of the young guys in more.

Tough schedule for the next 5 weeks as the Pat's are @Indy, Lions,@Green Bay,@San Diego, Miami. GB is always a beast at home and the Lions now have a healthy Megatron to go along with their #1 ranked defense, being realistic I can't see NE getting through those games without dropping 1-2 of them. Meanwhile Denver has @Rams, Miami, @KC, Buffalo, @ San Diego, the only real challenge IMO will be the KC game. As well as NE played last week I still can't see them beating Denver at home in a playoff game, your not going to get a punt return for a TD and PM will not overthrow many passes, even in the loss at Foxborough he still managed 425yds passing.

At some point, it is on the coach to either put a leader in place or set the fire under someone's ass to make them the leader. Cutler can't lead that team. Look at him on the sidelines. He is decent enough of a QB, but he lacks the ability to lead his team and it shows. Trestman has failed to do anything about it, so yes, it is on him. Look at what the Bears did against SF. Why can't compete at that level? I mean, sure they were destroyed by Rodgers, but Rodgers is just that special of a guy, I'd forgive them losing to him. 6 touchdowns in the first half though? No fucking way that is going to slide.

Your probably right about trestman but damn he doesnt play the games. Have you seen how bad the offensvive tackles have been? Do you think Cutler would be this bad if he was getting all pro play from bushrod and an improvement from Mills serviceable work when protected last year? O line is in shambles and Cutler has happy feet. He has been surprisingly durable this year but his entire game has been off like he has shell shock or PTSD.

Team should go with Clausen for a few quarters at least to get Cutler to approach his game fundamentally. If the Oline is gonna get scrambled its probably better to have clausen int here anyway. The last thing I want at this point is the season to give a bunch of vets a ton of playing time when they wont be here next year. They need to evaluate the roster ASAP and finding out if Clausen can play is one of them. Bears need to develop some of their young guys instead of trotting out Briggs and DJ williams and find out if Jennings can play the nickle ASAP or let him go after this year. hes making 6 or 8 million this year. Losing Slausen is affecting line much more than anything this year.

Kinda had a feeling the Bears secondary was in trouble when Tannerhill lit them up in the 2nd half of that loss then they got to face Brady and Rodgers in back to back weeks. I did expect both teams to win but the secondary was almost non-existent in both games which forced the Bears to play from way behind which means you become a "one-dimensional" offense and teams are free to go after the QB because they are not worried about giving up yds on the ground.

Should I start a new thread for this?

Your NFL Report Card: Break Down your team, Predict the playoff seeds

We are now 10 weeks in where clear lines have formed—contenders, pretenders, and bubble teams. With 7 weeks left most teams have 6/7 games left on the docket and there is clear jockeying for the bye-seeds, division champs, and wild cards in both the AFC and NFC. While there are favorites anything could happen with a lot of teams in contention with no teams with a stranglehold on home field advantage.

Arizona is the #1 seed in the NFC with an 8-1 record but with the loss of QB Carson Palmer and with division games against Seattle (twice), @Santa Clara, and @St Louis in addition to tough games against Detroit and KC Arizona could drop from the #1 seed after Week 10 to watching the playoffs from home. The #1 and #2 seeds are wide open for Philly, Detroit, Dallas, Green Bay, and even Seattle. And yet any one of these teams could with a bad stretch could lose their division and find themselves out of the playoffs while a 7-9 NFC South team squeaks in.

In the AFC Denver and New England are tied at 7-2 but New England shares the tie breaker. Denver plays some tough games (tough division games @KC, @ SD; a possibly desparate @CIN, plus @St Louis, Miami, Buffalo). If they fall to the currently 6-3 Kansas City Denver could find themselves dropping from the #2 seed with a bye and one home field game all the way down to #5, no bye, and playing in the elements on the road in the Wild Card round.

So, yeah, exciting stuff! If it piques your fancy

Eagles-Pack could be interesting as well.

As good as Dem Iggles D has been for long stretches of time in games, I fear Aaron Rodgers will simply overwhelm them.

Sanchez hasn't played that badly, but he would really have to up his consistency and play mistake free for the Iggles to have any chance.

You can bet I'll be watching and hoping, though.

Any given Sunday and all . . .

Edit: If I know Chip Kelly's approach, (and let's face it, like any rabid fan, I think I know more about the coaches and players than I really do, or could through the prism of the media and a clutch of televised games) even as he establishes the run game and then play action, he'll have Sanchez going long repeatedly.
