I think you're missing the fact that this was the reason sites like RottenTomatoes and Metacritic were created in the first place. People felt there will always be a bias when examining a single reviewer's impression, so they compiled a cross-section of all available reviews and produced a composite score.

yet critics often live in their own little world outside of that of your average movie-goer

then there is also the fact that its often their job and not their interest in why the do what they do

then there is the fact that many critics might be overly harsh on this one because it didn't live up to their own expectations based on the first two but that doesn't mean it was a bad movie relative to other movies. Heck, many of the "negative" reviews admit the movie is good, just not as good - you can say that is a negative review but a site like rottentommatoes doesn't exactly take that into account with the overall score - you have to read each and every individual review to get a true feel for things.

To put things into some better perspective, glancing through that article on the worst to best rated comixtomovies, Spiderman 3 is better than 300...heck, there are many on that list that are all out of place on my personal list, such as Hellboy outranking Sin City...but nooooo, these are your infallible 'collective critics'.

Everyone keeps calling spiderman emo but if you pay attention to the church scene he is obviously goth. Just look at those pointed arches.

OMG that was so horrible. I used to love reading spider-man comics, but this movie spoiled everything. God knows i live Kiki since Vampire, but she was horrible in it and i can't get past her snaggleteeth. Dont even get me started about Venom!

All the speculation I hear is between $110-130M

The Pirates 2 record is a tough nut to crack at $135M but Sony has flooded the market with prints. This is probably the widest release ever.

Early user reviews (given that this is the first day) are also down. How do you explain that?

Again, from RottenTomatoes (User Reviews):

Spider-Man - 89%
Spider-Man 2 - 91%
Spider-Man 3 - 74%

And the percentage has been dropping since yesterday.

saw it. first showing of the day. not include the midnight stuff.

I was disappointed. the ending was total BS. They dragged it out way too much with the touchy feely stuff. factor in the stupid teenage girls behind me going "oh no he didn't" at the jazz club made even more annoying.

If they had cut back on the emotional stuff and had more action it'll probably be better.

Worst of the three films because the story failed and the acting just wasn't as passionate; likely because the story failed. Not nearly enough time to develope the new villians.

Can't blame the special affects though.

You've apparently already made up your mind, and you did say you'd go see it, so enjoy it because it does offer some different and pretty good entertainment the previous two movies didn't have.

How did they kill venom? Did they use sound waves? I haven't seen it yet.

They should've kept Eddie Brock alive and put him on spiderman 4 and be the main villain. In my opinion the ending should've have ended with Peter losing the dark costume and it went to Eddie Brock, so we get a cliff hanger for spiderman 4. Now I just don't see what they can talk about in spiderman 4, other than just introducing new villains. At least keeping Eddie Brock he could've been developed from Spiderman 3 to Spiderman 4, instead of rushing it.

Even though the Harry/Peter alliance were not really related to the comics I thought that was a great scene and it was a good way to kill off his character. I think Harry's character was probably the most developed one because we see all sides of him.

The biggest downside was probably Mary Jane, her character became whiny and just didn't match up to the acting of the first 2.

I liked it. I thought they tried to develop one too many characters. I think they wanted a big bang film and decided to have 2 villians. I like the storyline but there was too much in it to really develop into a great story. However, I like the fact that it was not just an explosion fest like most 3rd movies are (matrix trilogy anyone?). I liked the fact they concentrated on Peter and Mary Janes relationship, and liked the development of the goblin character. I thought Venom was killed too quickly, he should have gotten away for the next movie. Then you could have either brought sandman back or just concentrated on Venom. However remember there is some of that black stuff at the prof's lab and it could spawn another venom character if it gets into the wrong hands. Overall, I give a 4 out of 5 stars, but they lost a star for being a bit too ambitious.

I just saw it on Imax a few hours ago. I didnt think it was too bad, but it just seemed like too much was going on with the amount of film they had. Definately not as good as the first two, although the visuals were fantastic. The emo Spidey was funny. I kept wondering if he was gonna slice his wrists...
Think there'll be a sequel? I'm thinking so, but I heard Toby Mac's contract was only for 3 films...

I also likes the plot change a bit when it goes "this guy is who really killed your uncle" bear in mind I never read the comic.

I saw it at the midnight opening, huge spider-man fan, and this movie was, ok at best. It's been a long time since I've actually regretted paying to see a movie in theater.

Emo parker, jazz dance scene, incredibly over the top and bad acting from extras. I hate Sam Raimi. We went with a group of 7 people and every single one of us were disappointed. Save it for a rental.

Saw it earlier this morning. It was OK. Should have used Venom more.
Too many closeups of Tobey trying to be emotional!!
The whole part with Tobey dance and pointing at the girls was so retarded!!

Does anyone remember the name of the movie during the previews that played The Beetles- Hey Jude song??
thanks

Yeah.
Oh that sucks.

Ah, here we are! Table for 2, Parker! (French accent make it sound like "Pecker")
Parker.
That is what I said, Parker. (once again, sounds like "Pecker")
