This is one of the few amazingly good movies I've seen this year. Well worth the price of a movie ticket... well, a matinee ticket. (
Nothing's worth a goddamn $10+ ticket, unless it's 3 movies in a row) I was genuinely surprised at how well it flows, despite the episodic nature of the film. True, at the end of each "section" I was a little disappointed and found it difficult to "part ways" with a character I'd just grown to know and truly enjoy watching -- especially Marv -- but the "sections" after that were always enough to catch my full attention once more. I found it cool how well the stories tied together, and how amazingly well the whole thing opened and closed with two scenes so similar, so simple and appropriate that it put the conceptual equivalent of a pretty bow on the wrapping of the story. Excellently done.
A few things really surprised me when I watched it. First off, Mickey Rourke is just damn amazing as Marv. That section has to be my favorite story out of all of them, and it's done very well. Secondly, when the f%$# did Elijah Wood get so damn scary? I mean how,
how did that little squirt from
North turn into some kind of demonic killing machine, and wearing a Charlie Brown shirt no less?
In general, a lot of the performances in this just blew me away. Any movie where Jessica Alba doesn't come off as a no-talent cam-whore is gold in my book. She was actually enjoyable on screen, and not just because she was barely clothed most of the time. And may I just say, if nobody figured out that Bruce Willis can still do action after seeing
Hostage, you can now rest assured that he can and still will kick ass and take names. (
He cannot, however, kick ass and chew bubblegum, as that is Roddy Piper's speciality) Benecio Del Toro was outstanding, no surprises there. (
The car scenes are some of the funniest in the film) And Clive Owen made an excellent anti-hero, even if he can't keep his accent straight half the time.
There were only a few things that bothered me in the film. A few of the CG effects looked too damn cheesy, like when Wendy's going Carmageddon on Marv. And the scene with the army of armed hookers on the rooftop shooting the "fish in the barrel"... yeah, the director needed to inform some of the eye candy that no matter how gorgeous their breasts are that men, by nature, will look at the shiny flashy shooting things, (
if only for a moment) and holding an uzi like it's a hair dryer is not going to cut it.
Anyway, a damn good film, something I
will have to buy on DVD when it comes out. And on a side note, my personal congradulations to Bruce Willis for making out with Jessica Alba.
