I don't think there's any doubt now that the players had it in their minds to test him come playoffs,

/facepalm

Yeah, a bunch of players independently decided to do things that are worthy of suspensions in the playoffs just to see how Shanahan will react.

and he flunked his first challenge severly. He's been staggering and flailing like a punch drunk dumwit ever since, and Torres just lobbed him a softball to set things right.

Other than fining Weber instead of giving him a one game suspension, what has Shanahan done so badly?

The funny thing is, people were complaining that Shanahan's punishments were too severe during preseason. Now he's not being severe enough in the playoffs, where each game is worth several regular season games.

So: how do you explain this garbage we're seeing?

Hint: crap comes from one place and one place only.

Hint: crap comes from one place and one place only.

Preface: I'm not excusing anything that any of these guys has done, I just think most of the punishments were appropriate or pretty close to it.

Neil, Asham, Adams, Backstrom - frustration, mostly reactionary and not giving adequate thought to what they're doing

Torres, Shaw, Bitz - playing too close to the edge. I think Bitz and Torres intended to deliver hard hits, not to injure anyone (though Torres was particularly reckless). Shaw wanted to squeeze past Smith along the boards but didn't have room.

Hagelin - intended to deliver a clean hit, stuck his elbow out when Alfredsson moved the opposite direction he expected. Momentary lapse of judgment, I don't think anyone believes he started skating toward Alfredsson intending to elbow him in the head.

Carkner - tried to get Boyle to agree to a fight off the faceoff, Boyle declined. It looked like he tried to goad Boyle into a fight again right before he started punching. Carkner was there because Boyle punched Karlsson, so he wasn't going to take no for an answer. I think Boyle just wanted to draw a penalty, which is fine, but he shouldn't be punching Karlsson in the head if he's not willing to fight. The whole thing looked worse than it was, because most of Carkner's punches landed on Boyle's back and side.

Weber - lapse of judgment that he he appeared to reconsider as it was happening.

FYI, 7 of 9 suspensions were from 3 series. There's a lot of good, clean hockey being played in the other 5 series.

Schneider starting for the Canucks tonight, and Daniel Sedin is "probably" playing.

Going to Schneider for a playoff elimination game... I wonder what this means for the off-season.

As much as I like Luongo, I'd rather see us keep Schneider and trade Luongo away for some help elsewhere. We've got Eddie Lack in the wings who is apparently a capable backup already.

I don't think Luongo can get traded. His cap hit is fairly large and he is proven to be nothing but a liability at this point. For what he does, you can get a goalie at 1/3 his cost.

Just heard that Luongo has a player out after 2 years and a club out after 4. I believe the 4th year of his contract is next year.

I didn't think opt-outs were allowed in the NHL. I thought the club only had a few options to get rid of a contract like buy out, send them to the AHL or if the player is a pre 35+ have them retire.

I think you're right and that by "player out" you should think request a trade.

Liability? he's not terrible by any means and clubs that will need a goalie next year will be looking him intensely. Namely Tampa and Washington.

Over the past ~5 years he's got stats that match anyone in the league. He has a large cap hit but a (relatively) low cash salary due to the front-loading. He could make an attractive goalie for Tampa or Florida who have to make league minimum and don't want to spend cash. And his wife's family is all there.

pens in 7, keep the faith..

I'm going to miss the first period, hopefully when I turn on the tv it'll be 8-0 pens, that way it'll be more difficult for the pens to blow that lead, although I sure they would try.

Not terrible but he is proving that he is not a goalie that can take you all the way... and win it.

Now with the CBA expiring I'm not sure any team will look at him until the next CBA is in place.

Yeah, I looked into it more. You are right he can force the Canucks to trade him and a couple of years later they can trade him even with his NTC. The only confusing part to me is there are some sites that have different periods of time that all this can go down. Like during the 4th year or after the 4th year. All sites mention that Luus option is first then the Nucks options is second.

I was thinking about this last night. Part of the major problem is the fact that the refs miss a ton of calls. Now that same player is back out on the ice and the entire opposing team is fired up looking for the head.

Headshots in the past didn't happen because guys feared for their lives. Now they dont...its a simple 1-3 game suspension, IF THAT, and they are back. The more the league tries to enforce no headshots the worse it will get until they decide to do full season bans.

I'm thinking that merely punishing the Player isn't enough. Perhaps these shenanigans need to start impacting the Teams of those players as well. Like having to pay in full or part of the Salaries of the hurt players.

correct me if I'm wrong, but do the Flyers now have 9 PP goals in only 13 chances?? That's a sexy 69% if so. Insanity!! AND 3 shorties. So 12 special team goals in 13 PP chances, nice.

Insane. 3-3 before the first period is over. No defense or goalies in this series? 😀

KT

Look what just happen 3 on 4, 3 on 5, 4 on 5 no team is going to survive something like that. It is just one of those runs where everything has gone bad for the pens.
