Remainder of regular season (10 games) plus one playoff round.

I think that's a good penalty.

wow, yeah, thats more like it.

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke has been suspended for the remainder of the regular season (10 games) and the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for delivering an elbow to the head of New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh in NHL game #1080 yesterday, the National Hockey League announced today. Cooke will forfeit $219,512.20 in salary.

"Mr. Cooke, a repeat offender, directly and unnecessarily targeted the head of an opponent who was in an unsuspecting and vulnerable position," said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. "This isn't the first time this season that we have had to address dangerous behavior on the ice by Mr. Cooke, and his conduct requires an appropriately harsh response."

Cooke's most recent suspension was for four games on Feb. 9, 2011 and under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement forfeits his salary based on the number of games in the season (82), rather than the number of days (186). The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Manny Malhotra is out for the season and playoffs for the Canucks with his eye injury :(

Huge hit for the team. He really raised the bar for that 3rd line center role.

We'll have to see how Lapierre will play that spot... fingers crossed it doesn't turn into a Wellwood situation.

Good. He tried to take his head off with that elbow.

I'm happy about the suspension but don't think he tried to take his head off with it. It looked to me like he was going for a normal hit, but realized he was going to miss. He thought "aw fuck it" and stuck his elbow out rather than do some work to chase the player after he missed.

Still, what a dumbass. Only Avery is worse.

??? Staal was the center before Malkin and Crosby went down. I'm no Staal fan, but I don't think Cooke is better...

I think most dirty hits happen that way, the player is going for a clean hit, but the window closes for it, and instead of disengaging they stick out an elbow or a knee, or they plow the guy into the boards.

I have Avery, but I don't think I've ever seen him throw a dirty hit. He's a shitbag, but I don't worry about safety of the players when he's on the ice like I do with Cooke or Trevor Gillies.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying but I think Malholtra was one of the more underrated pickups by the Canucks on FA day.

Looking past Ballard and Hamhuis he has helped bring the PK to second in the league(second not by much) and has chipped in a few offensively. Actually the 3rd line was one the better ones for the Canucks over the past 2 weeks.

He couldn't get Ott to get in a Ferrari with him so he did the only other thing he knew how to do.

Oh wow.

Went to a Devils-Sens playoff game in 2006 or 2007, and in the parking lot Devils fans were taunting Ottawa fans calling Heatly a murderer. He must hear that stuff constantly on the road.

Love this NHL Wheel of Justice;
Claude Lemieux blind side head hit on Kris Draper. Result: Out for season.
Verdict:
6 Games
After careful consideration, Claude Lemieux has been suspended for 6 games for his actions on Kris Draper.

But the league got the Cooke suspension right. Though it would be good for the Penguins ownership to step in, if the Penguins get out of the first round, and suspend him the rest of the season with no pay. Not sure they can do that or not. That would silence some criticism of Mario.

Great game last night between Pittsburgh and Detroit on Versus. It was great to see them come back from being down 4 goals to tie it up and extend it to a shootout. Howard did NOT have a good game last night. Too many rebounds he let go. Though it looked like the D was not on top of their game either. Usually see at least one Detroit D-man around the goalie ready to get the loose change out of there. So, was it an off night for Howard or an off night for the Detroit defense?

Howard had a labotomy or something. I knew it was bad when he let the first one in. McDonald has been hot lately, I hope he gets the starting job come playoffs.

The rest of the team just did their usual home game routine: Wake up by some point in the 2nd period.

Didn't that happen like 15 years ago?

Yes, but I keep grudges for a looooooong time.

And I don't understand Detroit's home record. It may be an early exit this year unless we drop below the #4 seed.

You mean like that lovely human Burtuzzi on your homosexual team who destroyed someones life and ended their career indefinitely?

Yea, I understand. That douche bag should be in jail.

Also, not quite nhl, but my house league team had it's championship last night. This is the Ice House in Hackensack NJ, which has a huge league with 8 divisions. I play for a division 8 team, but in reality it's almost as competitive as the middle divisions because of ringers.

For example, in the game last night, the other team had all seven of their goals scored by one player. I was playing 3rd line center, and was playing ok, actually got an assist on the go-ahead goal in the 3rd period.

Then I went out for a penalty kill, which I'm usually very good at. We kept the other team to low quality shots, but they scored on a really bad angle shot to tie it. On my next shift they scored again to take the lead with about 5 minutes to go. D:

We actually ended up tying the game with 90 seconds left and winning in OT, 8-7, but I didn't get any more shifts, so it was pretty frustrating. I don't feel like there was a heck of a lot I could have done on either of the goals. :(

Speaking of, Why isn't Charra on suspension? What he did was way worse than any of the recent elbowings.

Though the NHL lockout had not yet been resolved between the league and the players, Bettman scheduled a reinstatement hearing for Bertuzzi on April 26, 2005. The hearing was attended separately by Bertuzzi and Moore. After the lockout officially ended and the NHL was set to resume play for the 2005–06 season, Bettman announced Bertuzzi's reinstatement on August 8, citing that "Mr. Bertuzzi ha[d] paid a very significant price for his conduct," adding that he felt Bertuzzi was "genuinely remorseful and apologetic." Bertuzzi's 17-month suspension included the Canucks' final 20 games of the 2003–04 season (13 regular season and 7 playoff contets), which tied for the fourth-longest in NHL history. The suspension also accounted for $501,926.39 in forfeited salary, as well as an approximate $350,000 in lost endorsements. Bettman also cited "uncertainty, anxiety, stress and emotional pain for the Bertuzzi family" resulting from the suspension as a reason for his reinstatement.
Don't blame the Wings, blame Bettman for reinstating him. I didn't like the move when the Wings got him and I still don't. But he's playing for my team. It's sort of like when Rodger Clemens came over to the Yankees. I know a number of Yankees fans who hated the fact that he was a Yankee, but cheered for him in the playoffs.

You mean that scapegoat Bertuzzi who took all the wraith just cause he started it all? I mean was it unnecessary, yes but it wasn't he who broke Moore's neck it was the resulting pileup of team mates trying to stand up for him.

Just watch the many replays you can find, Bertuzzi's sucker punch was to Moore's right jaw/cheek area and his neck didn't snap back until everyone piled on him.

(My Opinion)

Matt Cooke on the other hand, went out of his way to make the elbow hit. He was clearly going to miss but yet put up his elbow to make the hit.

He got what he deserved.

Danny Heatley and Zidane Chara should have got suspensions too but the league is in the finest realms of hypocrisy.

Also it seems some players this year seem to be going out of their way to make these hits so I seriously got to wonder if some of them are doing it with intent to injure to make a point to the league.
