should be a rule about punting on the opponent's 40 on 4th and inches. the math says you go for it.

I just don't see the Niners stopping Brees. That, and their offense has been so bad for most of the year that they have to hope that they can win a 14-10 game.

I think the Saints are an automatic 10 points just for showing up.

I don't know, a lot of teams weren't supposed to have trouble offensively against the Niners, but they did just that.

How was that a great timeout call by Coughlin? It ended up saving them 5 seconds, and if the Falcons had managed to actually convert that third down it actually would have helped them.

why do people think the 49ers can't score? They're ranked 11th in the league in PPG...

New Orleans is a completely different team on the road. They almost lost to the Titans with Jake Locker at QB. They've only played one outdoors game since Week 6. They needed a last second field goal last year to beat a 49ers team that wasn't playing nearly as well as they are this year.

New Orleans averaged 41.1 points per game at home this season and 38 points per game in 11 total indoor games. The Saints played five outdoor games and averaged 23.8 points per game in the four most recent ones. They barely won at Tennessee (22-17) and lost at Tampa Bay (26-20) in their two most recent non-dome games.

Top in FG's, 44 total, next best team has 33. In touchdowns, ranked #21 with 35.

So they score, but they have trouble getting touchdowns, which makes it tougher to keep up with a team like the Saints.

Points win games, not TDs. The niners have trouble scoring TDs, it's true, but they put together enough scoring drives so that they usually score TDs in addition to the 3-4 FGs they score. Point being, Niners can score enough to win games against any team, despite this perception that they only score 13 points a game

He's going to get ripped again for it, but kudos to Mike Smith for going for it on 4th down.

Tough to say. If you have confidence it'll be a low scoring game, it would have been 10-8. The later TD would have put the game away anyway.

I don't mind going for it, but the play call was beyond stupid. Empty backfield, with no Turner in the game even as a decoy. Man coverage outside so the box is stacked. Huge ad to do a QB sneak and they stick with it and get stuffed.

Its because of their defense. But the Saints haven't played a defense as the 49 ers yet this season. They got the ability to shut Brees down. But the Saints D haven't come big yet. They will need them against the 49 ers

Actually, the QB sneak is about as reliable as it gets in this situation, by a pretty wide margin. They didn't have any better luck on the next drive at 3rd and 1 with the RB dive.

It's easy to Monday Morning QB that call, but the truth is that it's exactly what I would call, and if you can't gain a foot on 4th down when you need it, you're not going to win the game.
