I think in Jackson's case it goes a bit beyond "dramatic effect". Angioplasty, good friend and former teammate suddenly dies on the street in Manhatten yesterday, team loses series in playoffs for first time in a while. Lotta stress.

I can't say I blame Phil Jackson for doing so if he did. He had a tough couple of weeks (Laker woes, angioplasty, death of former teammate Dave DeBusschere from a heart attack), let alone a whole entire season.

As for the Lakers, a valiant effort from a depleted but gutsy group. Being three-time champions, they did not throw in the towel. In fact, a few better defensive efforts in some of the earlier games and the Horry's three-pointer going in, the series could have a different outlook.

in my opinion, the championship was lost with that horry three pointer. if it goes in, the spurs collapse emotionally and lakers go on to win the series and the championship. but horry missed, and the spurs became more focused and had a 3-2 lead. just like last year, one horry three pointer decided the nba championship.

Hmm, I guess the Lakers can't throw the switch when it's crunch time like they always said they could... Interesting. How'd that 28 point ass kicking taste L.A.? Now if the idiots in that city will just riot the evening will be complete.

If you think about it this is the best thing that could possibly happen. Not only are the lakers out but we won't have to hear from 90% of the laker fans anymore because they'll have to find a new bandwagon to jump on. How sweet it is.

actually i think laker hating is a bigger bandwagon of late.

You might have a point. True with all great dynasties though I'm sure. I missed the celts and I worshiped Jordan so I'm sure I just ignored all the haters then.

The Lakers do give plenty of reasons to be hated besides their rings though. They're just a classless team. Plus the way they've just screwed off for years figuring they could throw the switch when they had too. Well, it finally caught up with them. I'm sure you can see how most people are glad to see that kind of stupid arrogance has finally been justly rewarded. I feel sorry for Kobe but that's about it.

What's scary is the Spurs will be even better next year. Could be a dynasty in the making we are all witnessing here?

Even more scary is that they have so much money under the cap to get another star. Whereas for the Lakers, much (if not most) of the money goes to Shaq and Kobe, and can only offer a midlevel exception to certain players or just the minimum.

Playoff Format to be Changed Again
Associated Press

Los Angeles (AP)

"Due to popular fan request, and, in the best interest of the NBA and long term financial interests of the league, we have decided to extend the Western Conference Semi-Finals to a best of 9 series," Commisioner David Stern said after the San Antonio Spurs beat the Los Angeles Lakers, 110-82, at Staples Center. "After meeting with Players Association President Michael Curry, the players have unilaterally agreed on this decision."

I know! WTF type of comment is that ... did he forget that the Spurs won an NBA Championship 4 years ago?! Apparently, those games weren't more important than getting to the Western Conference Finals

Well i'm glad the Spurs finally have that gorilla off their backs.

I'm hoping Sacramento wins tonight. Running both teams to 7 games leaves the Spurs with a few extra nights off. A Dallas vs. San Antonio would be such a sweet conference finals for us Texans. Reminds me of when Houston used to duke it out with SA.

:D

I'd have to agree with walton. While it may not be the most exciting win for them I would have to agree that it's the biggest. In recent memory at least. For one beating the three time NBA champs is nothing to sneeze at. Second they were able (to a degree) show that they're not as soft as they've been made out to be. In the fourth they just turned it on and blew the lakers out of the building. That will mean a huge amount to this team imo. Knowing that that they completely owned the best out there (albiet a bit dinged) will be a huge confidence builder.

With the cap position they have, the depth they've got, and the new found confidence they've aquired we could be seeing the start of a new dynasty. Of course, we'll have to see how the lakers re-tool themselves in the off season but the spurs have all the marks of being very very good for a long time to come.

Oh, and to the above quote: What we watched was the defacto finals. So depending on how you look at it they just won a second championship. It would take a miracle for Dallas or Sac to beat them imo and we all know whoever comes out of the east has zero chance.

I am not saying that this wasn't a huge win because it is the greatest win they have had in a couple years, but I think winning the actually NBA Finals is more important to a franchise. I beg to disagree, but you had some good arguments:)

i was so frustrated midway through the fourth, i felt like crying

don't know what happened to kobe tonight, he just didn't seem to be into the game. well, no one can take anything away from the spurs, they're truly the better team. if the lakers don't pick up a decent PF and PG during the offseason, i can see the spurs winning 3 titles in a row.

I was discussing this with my friends and we have concluded that the Spurs-Lakers match was for the NBA Championship. I predict the Spurs will take it all this year. Good for David Robinson.

The championship was lost at the beginning of the season. All the signs pointed to it. Lakers started off horrible, some even questioned if they would make it to the playoffs. Shaq wasn't nearly as dominant. Shaq is troubled by injuries. Rick Fox gets hurt. Deaven George gets hurt. Lakers no longer totally control the 4th quarter, even during the regular season. Sure, they make good tries, but they can't close it out like they used to 2 years ago. And to top it all off, Robert Horry, the man made infamous for hitting all his game winning 3 pointers, misses one in game 5. It just wasn't destined to happen.

Well, if the Spurs get upset and don't win the championship this year, it would be a huge letdown. Truthfully though, can you think of a team that deserves it more than the Spurs after what they have been through ever since they last won a championship?

1. They win the championship in 1999 and it's immediately called out by Phil by stating put an asterick on it.
2. Duncan gets hurt in 2000 and the Spurs lose inthe first round to Pheonix unable to defend their championship.
3. Spurs come back strong and make it to the Conf. finals and get swept by the Lakers in 2001.
4. Spurs lead most of the time in most of the games against the Lakers in 2002 playoffs but still manage to choke in the fourth quarter and lose the series 4-1.
5. None of the Spurs players or coaches ever talk bad about any team or anyone. They always lose gracefully and you never hear some crazy crap about them on the news. They always give back to the community.

Bottom Line:

It's time for the good guys to finish first for a change.

Good point. The Lakers overall this season looked disinterested and unenergetic. It showed with the lousy defense, turnovers, etc. Well, time to gear up for next season although I am still worried. Even if we get Karl Malone and/or Scottie Pippen as rumors suggest, they're just as old if not older than some of the players on this current Laker team. And not only is Mitch Kupchak not Jerry West, he's competing against him now.
