Why does CNN state that 51 seats are needed for a majority in the Senate? Understanding the mathmatics, but with a 50-49-1 in favor of the Repubs, the Repubs will win just about any vote as the VP will have the tiebreaker.

Because Jeffords is an independent in name only, he sides with the Democrats on most issues. Even then it's a moot point; the Republicans would have committee chairs, and VP Cheney would be able to cast any tie-breaking vote.

I think there quit a few intelligent voters. Like those who voted:

for Cornyn in TX
Chambliss in GA
Talent in MO
Against the two tax initiatives in NV

and even the Dems in the GA primary that got rid of McKinney a few months ago.

That's basically what I was getting at, yet CNN keeps posting "51 seats needed for majority" on their coverage. Well, not necessarily, when the VP has tie-breakers.

Looks like Talent will win in MO and Allard will hold on in CO and barring an upset in Alaska, the repubs will have 50 seats in the Senate and control basically everything. If I recall, this will be the first time the Repubs will have control of the Presidency, House and Senate in over 30 years.

If a real conservative Republican like Bill Simon won in a state like California, that would be amazing.

Not too likely though... I'd imagine his early lead is due to the polls being tallied up quickly in rural, Republican leaning counties.

whoa, maybe I spoke too soon. Carnahan is picking up steam with 90% of precincts reporting. She is only down 2% or 26K votes.

Also, wonder what will transpire in the LA runoff in Dec. Conventional wisdom would say if the Repub who will be running can take all of the other republican votes, then this would be a gain for them.

You never know.Simon is such a lightwieght that many Dem's might not have bothered to vote thinking that Simon wouldn't stand a chance.

Thune's on top in South Dakota. Allard is up by a large margin in Colorado. Coleman leads in Minnesota. Talent is up in Missouri.

That's 52 seats, kids.

If nothing else, these elections have been a lot more competitive than the pollsters predicted they would be. A lot of incumbents are going to be without a job tomorrow, and a lot folks who thought they would win comfortably are finding out otherwise.

I think it may be worth saying that pre-election polls are absolutely worthless.

Holy monkey, I can't believe CA is as close as it is. Hopefully that already includes the big dem areas like LA.

Hopefully a bunch of hollywood tards will be moving to Canada if Simon wins :p

Wonder about South Dakota too. Looks like the R dude (Thu something) is slightly ahead. I hope Tom Dasshole loses when he runs in the future.

Some say Daschle would not take the Senate Minority Leader position in order to prepare for his run for 2004. CNN had him on earlier and while he tried to play up the Dems chances, he didn't sound too convincing.
