The Burning Crusade client was hacked pretty much on release. I remember D/ling it and playing around in the empty world. No monsters, but it was still cool to check the world out early.
Doubt that too will happen for D3, at launch anyway. As with the previous two in the series, a large percentage of the map in D3 will be randomized, with the rest being fixed. And since that's handled by the servers, the only explorable terrain hackers will have access to are the fixed portions, and they're not very large, and also not connected to each other. Maybe the first fixed area where players start in Act 1, but that's about it.

Just as a heads up, it looks like you must have a WoW or SC2 key tied to your account to have a chance of playing the beta.

I want my damn beta blizzard. They never gave it to me for SC2 (which I preordered). I want to get into the d3 beta!!!!

On a side note, I just updated my hardware spec on Battle.net. The program reports that I have 2.7GB of video memory! 😵

I have a GTX 460 1GB.

Go to start, right click Computer, go to properties, and open the performance index menu (or w/e it's called, the one that rates your computer.) It will give you that same number there for video memory. My 9800 GT (1GB) also sits at 2.7 GB video memory.

I think it's assuming your video card will tap into your system memory if needed?

The FAQ just says you need a Blizzard game tied to your account.
Apparently a European Blizz tech support dude said this:
As already mentioned, you’ll need a World of WarCraft or StarCraft 2 Account to participate in the Diablo 3 Beta Lottery. If you don’t have one, you’ll have no chance to create a Diablo 3 Beta Account if you win. This applies to our forums as well.

We don’t do this because we only accept paying customers for the beta, even though it might look like that.

We want to prevent that players create countless Battle.net Accounts to take part in the lottery. Because of that, only players with an activated game will be able to take part in the beta lottery.”

Might just be for EU though, as both games are the only ones with current support in the continent (according to someone on the D3Incgamers comments). Assuming this doesn't apply to everyone else, I wouldn't be surprised if the Beta still requires a valid purchase of a Blizz game.

That makes sense to me. Otherwise I'd be making 200 BNet accounts tonight!

I have Warcraft 3 and D2 cd keys linked to my bnet account for retrieval if necessary. Hopefully this will help. Actually I think I purchased Warcraft 3 digitally directly from bnet.

I'm a paying customer mother fucker!

Beta my ass, that was more like a demo. It's over after you kill Leoric (~lvl 9).

Since it was so short, and it doesn't sound like you want to play, I'd be glad and grateful to try out your demo as well 🙂 (assuming you have one)

considering they said it was going to be limited only to the first few levels and solely for the purpose of network stress-testing, how can you complain?

did they do a d2 beta in a similar fashion? i honestly dont know

They had a closed beta and open beta. I want to say the closed was limited to act 1 and the open was limited to getting to that chick in the graveyard, but I can't remember for sure.

Ya, I didn't know much about the beta. I was just using my friend's account. Beta level cap aside, I'm pretty disappointed in the game, but not from anything in beta--I just don't care for many of the mechanics changes they've made and I knew that going in.

Can I make friends with your friend, so I can use his account too?

Does the WoW account have to be active?? Cause I stopped playing WoW at the end of WotLK. Would I still qualify?

If not, I'd be very very sad...

Edit: see above

You also need a WoW or SC2 account to post on the official Diablo 3 forums right now.

They won't let me post, saying my license has expired or some bullshit like that. This doesn't sound good...

Someone else queried another support personnel, and here's what was said:
If you are opted into the beta then you are eligible to be chosen for it. When it says active battle.net it means that you have a battle.net account that has any title attached to it. In your case you were able to opt in due to the legacy games (ex, Diablo) you have attached to your battle.net account.

Can't say whether an inactive WoW account falls under that category tho. I wouldn't believe anything at this point unless it comes directly from either Bash or Jay.

I wasn't in the closed beta for D2, but you're correct about the open beta. I can't remember how long the OB lasted, but it's kinda funny remembering what kinda stuff was godly at the time: low level set pieces like Vidalia's and perfect gems (semi-rare gem shrines being the only way to upgrade them). Hmm...I think gems didn't have a min level required back then, but it's been too long.

Official game guide is up, and it includes a pretty extensive skill planner. Between this and beta videos, you can pretty much imagine yourself playing already.

OMGOMGOMGOGMOGMOMGMOG

So freaking psyched for this game

Some interesting tidbits:

Followers, champions brave enough to join you in battle against the Burning Hells, are similar to Henchmen from Diablo II in that they can be outfitted with relevant arms and armor, but they're upgradable with their own skills
Diablo III lets you "respec" your skills at any time to experiment with interesting choices.
You can share items between all of your characters just by placing them in your stash
Cauldron of Jordan
Turn your items into gold.
Stone of Recall
Create a two-way portal that will teleport you to and from town.
In the brutal new Inferno mode, available only once the game's been beaten on Hell difficulty, monsters outstrip players in level range. Inferno difficulty is an epic challenge intended for players who have reached the game's level cap, and it offers epic rewards as well.

Some interesting tidbits:

I wouldn't be too excited about followers, the developers plainly stated that they do not plan on making them viable for any difficulty past normal, which is quite strange considering the amount of work they've put into them. They also can't be used in multiplayer games.

I wonder if it's possible to create a "long distance Monk"... heh, it just sounds so contradictory. 😀 Mantra of Conviction + Intimidation and using Deadly Reach and Wave of Light.
