I thought diablo3 was supposed to be a closed beta for employees and family only. or has this changed?

Not sure where you heard that one, but Blizzard never made that statement. They've allowed people to submit D2 beta applications for years now.

That would be a very poor way to test software as complicated as an online game.

About 3 weeks ago Blizzard told us that the closed beta for employees and family has been ongoing for months now. Blizzard is about to start a short invite-only open beta to stress test the battle.net servers and get some buzz going.

As someone already mentioned the first wave of invites, to press and fan sites, have already gone out. Beta will start very soon now.

I guess the confusion was that they mentioned this, but they never said it was the only closed-beta testing they were doing. Closed beta testing can have multiple iterations, as can any stage of testing.

Though open beta implies that it's open for anyone who wants to participate. The invites are limited to people Blizzard selects, thus it's still closed testing. They've stated they hope to be done (with testing) in time for a release this year, but that they'll delay the game further if they think it needs it.

Sorry, just arguing semantics here, but I'm bored at work :p.

Yes, they have not told us much about the closed internal beta, other then that it was officially declared as beta back in March, after a long time as a alpha build, and that as of at least 3 weeks ago the internal beta was capable of complete games with all classes and skills, including killing the final boss.

Yes, the terms for open and closed beta had been muddied. Now 'open' beta really just means that you can tell people you are playing it.

Just thought I'd mention this since I was actually surprised to see it get through the GMail filter, but I got this one today and it is of course rubbish. So, you know, read the crap first.

Sad that someone is going to fall for that.

Yes, and there is another one going around that has a link to a spoofed battle.net login page that asks for username and password. Apparently that email is actually based on the real email blizzard is sending out, only with the link changed. So, watch what site you are at carefully.

This is from a deleted thread on the D3 forums this morning - they're leaked screens from the beta. Rumor has it that the F&F Beta just started.

There was a YouTube video also but the poster has since closed their account.

So it's Diablo 2 with a minor facelift and removal of some of the better character classes?

Woop!

Pretty clear you haven't read a thing and are basing this off the screenshots only.

Substantially changed from D2.

I haven't read anything lately. I do know that they've removed the character classes I cared about and that the new ones don't look that interesting from what we've seen.

From the screenshots, it certainly does look like hi-res Diablo 2 with a little bit of polish applied.

Yep. That's what it is. Move along, nothing to see here.
