Also, the graphics for the MP part of the game aren't as detailed as the SP portion. I guess it was done for faster load times, but it's not as nice looking as the SP game. I've never played a CoD game before, but I don't really care for the Perks. They should offer more Perks than just 2 or three per class. I dislike starting off with weak weapons with no upgrades available. I don't want to play the game every day for 4 hours a day in order to unlock better weapons and gear.

It is a "run and gun" game if that's what you make of it. The "deathmatch" types are the traditional "Halo-esque" while others have a more team-oriented feeling. Some of the maps are certainly small but others are quite large (mostly the "outdoors in the city" maps). Easily big enough to run around the level and flank the other team without being seen...

Perks add a new level of creativity to the game. In Halo everyone is the same, in this game 5 people might have the same weapon but all will act differently. One does more damage, one reloads faster, one's bullets penetrate further. Sure people dropping grenades can get annoying (although I probably only get killed by 'em 5-8% of the time), but it's a new twist to an old style of game.

As for starting off with "weak weapons..." the M16 is one of the best weapons in the game. Get 25 kills with it and put a dot sight on it and it's a beast. And just so ya know everyone started out with the same weapons and upgrades. I've only been playing for somewhere around 7 1/2 hours and I'm already lvl 27, so it doesn't take terribly long.

As for a "defensive plan" I'll also disagree. Played against a team on the map with the shot down helicopter, they had the tall building completely covered and we could NOT get in to get 'em. Once again, the game is what you make of it. If you're a run and gunner then you can play and do well that way, if you're a slow and careful sniper/sneaker then you can also do well that way. Graphics aren't as nice on MP as they are in SP for Halo 3 either...alot more going on on-screen.

As for the laggy "I shot him 5 times and he hit me once and I died" issues it's happened to me 3 or 4 times but it's nowhere near bad enough to make me wanna quit.

There are so many gametypes. Honestly I've only played team dm so far. I'm Captain now.

There definitely is defense if you aren't playing with random people. On one of the maps we played against a clan and they just ate us up by using all the defensive positions in the buildings.

Seems like you can do really well with the run and gun but ultimately the clan that works well as a defense is gonna eat anyone up. Played against another group on Overgrown last night and they had a sniper covering the entire field from the barn with claymores and 1 guy covering him. The rest just marched up the field and if one of us popped our head out then he took us out.

We actually won that game (barely) because he sniped me and I had last stand on and I killed him with my 1911 from across the level.

Just got into COD4 multiplayer last night. This game has GOTY on lock.

I'm an old Counter-Strike nut and this is so much more fun.

I wouldn't call it GOTY...maybe multiplayer FPS GOTY, but look at the competition...

Halo 3
Crysis
Mass Effect (although not an FPS)
R6: Vegas (wasn't that technically an '07 game or am I wrong?)
Metroid Prime 3
Orange Box

And that's just the shooting games...

R6 came out November '06.

CoD4 is defnitely one of my favorites right now. But it's hard to compare to other games. It's nothing like R6, halo 3, orange box, mass effect...

all of these games are kind of unique and offer different online experiences. I will say that as of right now CoD4 is definitely my #1 multiplayer game.

Hey there, I saw the other thread about Custom Classes, hopefully they have not been mentioned yet in this thread, but can someone give me a rundown of what those are?

You can choose:

Primary weapon (from any of the categories, assault, LMG, submachine guns, sniper, shotguns, etc)
Primary weapon attachment i.e. grenade launcher on m-16, red dot sight, ACOG scope, silencer

Pistol
Pistol attachment: silencer for example

Special grenades: Stun grenade, flash grenade, frags

You can then choose 3 perks from 3 different groups. perks 1, perk 2, and perk 3. Each group has a different selection. You have to rank up to unlock all of the perks.

Perk 1 are things like carrying extra special grenades, RPG's, claymores, C4
Perk 2 and perk 3 are basically power ups you choose from.

For Perk 2 I like to use Stopping Power which makes your bullets more powerful.
For Perk 3 I use Deep Impact which makes your bullets go through walls further.

There are a ton of perks, maybe you can find a list of them online somewhere.

Maybe someone else can explain it better, but there's a lot of options and it's hard to cover them all. Maybe the COD website has a listing?

I really am loving this game, so much fun :) Feels good to call in an airstrike and get 4-5 kills. Choppers are great too, when they don't get shot down...

that sounds pretty cool. Instead of forcing you into a specific set of weapons, it lets you pick... can you also pick up weapons on the field?

yes, and you can keep your primary when you do it. You can replace your pistol with a weapon you pick up.

I use my RPD LMG and when I get my first kill, I drop my pistol and pick up someone else's M-16 :)

So instead of taking forever to reload my LMG I just switch to the M-16.

There are some really frustrating perks, though :p Like the Martyrdom and Last Stand perks..

Martydom when you kill an enemy, they drop a grenades when they die. So if you don't back up from their body it blows you up.

Last stand, when you kill an enemy they lay on the ground with their pistol and can shoot for a short period of time. You can shoot them while they are on the ground, though and kill them.

Since the full version has Martyrdom, Last Stand is rarely used anymore (not sure why...). I won a match the other day because someone shot me and I fell to the ground, killed him from across the level with my pistol and won the match (and it didn't count me as dying). I rarely use it though, and I've never used martyrdom.

Perks really set this game apart. I almost always use the Stopping Power perk, but my perk 3 switches off between Steady Aim (lets you shoot from the hip easier) and the Athletic Training or whatever that lets you sprint. Don't underestimate the ability to run further, at the very beginning of a match you can sprint and be set up in cover while the enemies walk towards you.

I will say, they need to nerf the P90 SMG. The thing only takes 2 or 3 hits from really far away to kill you, it needs to be about 1/2 that powerful. I mean c'mon, it holds a ton of rounds, and reloads really quickly. and hits like a sniper rifle...

Had fun this morning, woke up with the wife to see her off to work and then jumped on CoD as I wasn't tired. Last game before I left for work was on the Ambush map, I called in an air strike and killed all 6 members of the other team...with the first bomb. Made me giggle. Ended up as one of my best matches ever, something like 28 kills and 4 deaths.

It's annoying but honestly it is effective...took me a while to get used to it, now it rarely kills me but it still gets alot of people.

The only thing in the entire game that really annoys me is Martyrdom. It is retarded, used way too much and just a way for noobs to get kills they wouldn't otherwise get and shouldn't get.

Nothing will make you madder than having 6 kills in a row then dying to martyrdom before you get your 7th so you can't call in a helo.

I've probably played about 95% team deathmatch. Played a few domination games (don't like it...) but I really need to branch out some and try the other gametypes. Team DM is just so much fun...

I've played TDM on every game but one so far. Played one game of FFA so I could get the challenge bonus. Eventually I'll try some others but ATM everyone I know is playing TDM.

I finished the SP campaign yesterday and started playing DM soon after.
I usually can't stand MP games, but this has got me intrigued. Can't wait to get home and play some more.

Not sure if this has been said yet but along with the customization another nice feature is the fact that you can change your weapon choices during the match. It isn't on the fly but next time you respawn you'll have the other weapon set. I figure most people know this but for anyone that hasn't played yet.

Dunno if it's been said either but it is a good point. Every once in a while the M16 just doesn't get it done for me and I'll need the ROF of the M4 and it's a simple switch. Although honestly most modern class-based shooters nowadays allow that.

True, I guess I'm just used to CS:S where you buy for the round and you are set with those weapons.
