First impression and thoughts! (PS3)

I spent about 3 hours with the game so far and I actually am really starting to enjoy it--actually much more than I thought I would. I tried to keep and open mind going in to this game and tried to embrace what the devs were trying to do here. So, anyway--here are my random thoughts on the game:

  • - The game in incredibily gorgeous. Buttery smooth frame rates without a single hitch at any time. Driving at insane speeds with the super-bright, high contrasty (my word 😛 )sun dried graphics. It looks so good, infact, that it had me secretly hoping that Rockstar would license this engine for GTAIV.

    - The sense of speed is almost unbeleiveable. If the game were going any faster I just dont know if it would be able to perceive it sensablity enough to play the game well. It's fine tuned and well adjusted--I hope it remains that way (well adjusted and tuned) throughout.

    - When I first started the game I had to practically force myself to keep driving to another, closer, intersection after losing an event instead of going back to retry the event I just failed to "get the game". I'm happy to say that I'm now getting use to the idea of hopping from event to event if I fail, realizing that I can come back to it at a later time. There are SO many things to do in Paradise city. Litterally every intersection has an event to kick off. That being said--I seriously would like the option to restart a failed event. It's a little frustrating to think that it wasnt implimented because Alex Ward didnt want load times in the game. Whatever.

    - I love the feature that introduces take-down cars as you progress through the game. These cars will drive around the city, randomly, and if you take them down--you unlock the vehicle. I love that! There was once instance where I took this really long race from the stadium all the way to the wind farm (IE: loong long race event) and I seriously screwed the race up and ended up coming in last. Bummer. Well, I came to an intersection out there (there arnt a lot of them) and was looking around for an event and all of a sudden a pink lowrider BLEW by me--it was one of the special takedown cars. I sped up and chased this guy for miles! All the way into the city, smashing, plowing and destroying things. Funny enough, I didnt actually take him down--I lost him. But the idea that he's still out there, somewhere, possibily lurking around each corner OR even way up in the hills totally adds an extra coolness factor and even incentive to just cruise around.

    - In the game there are these fences with yellow signs (those that played the demo, know what I'm talking about). But the thing is they are EVERYWHERE! I feel like these hidden roads are just going to double or even triple my options of where I can go. The yellow is basically a sign from the developers saying, "Hey! Smash through here for a shortcut that might lead to a jump that might lead to another jump or a hidden alley or even another yellow fence. Who knows!". At one point, I smashed through one and it lead to an entirely hidden off-road dirt track that I could just race around--very cool.

    - The AI is much more aggressive this time around--and that includes it's own self abuse. There is something just so interesting and satisfiying about racing 8 other AIs and infront of you two cars are aggressivly dueling it out, smashing in to one another ( and infact destroying other cars in the process just to get one another) to take the lead. I just really enjoy watching that. It makes me feel like I'm not the only important person in this world.

    - I imagine that this next topic has to do with the fact that I'm early in the game, but I feel like, at times, my car will smash or crash way too easily--almost like if I drive over a pebble it's nuke time. Is my car made of Balsa Wood? This was probably the most frustrating thing for me because I would be racing the aggressive AI and my car would be totalled after edging a slower passenger car that was driving the same direction as me. I yelled at the game quite a bit because of this.

    - Some of the long races ended up in the hills (like I mentioned before), and some times I wanted to jump back to the Junkyard (home) instead of drive for 5-8 minutes to get there. Afterall, that's where the bulk of the races are. It would be nice if there was a "Jump to home" button or something of the like.

    - At times, I felt like the chase camera was a little too low. There were a few instances where I had a hard time seeing far enough ahead or over a upcoming hill, that I caught myself physically perking up on my couch. You can push up on the right stick--but its only temporary.

    - I've not played any MP in the full retail yet.

Playing the demo left me feeling a little bummed that my loved Burnout franchise had taken a wrong turn. But, going into the full retail with an open mind I found that Criterion might have avoided the effect on it's customers that it's title suggests--getting burned out.

-update- Someone just informed me that there are several Junkyards around the city--you just need to discover them first in order to use them.

Thanks for the excellent review, warcrow. I'm still undecided but your review has inched me toward getting the game. I especially like the sounds of the special wandering takedown car. That sounds like fun!

Quick question for those who have played it. When you smash through a yellow gate or one of the billboards, are these visible the next time you boot up the game and play? Or are they back to looking like new again? When I get the game, I'm going to want to find all of these things and be a completionist about it, but there's no way I'm going to remember which ones I've smashed through between play sessions unless they stay visibly damaged the whole time.

I agree with pretty much everything Warcrow said but I have the 360 version. I haven't noticed any of the slowdown that some people saw in the demo. I didn't notice it in the demo either though.

I never restarted the xbox while playing it but I played for a few hours and they seemed to stay smashed.

I found the cool dirt track that Warcrow talked about and a mining site with a bunch of rampable structures.

Imo they should have had a big oval track you could drive in and have race events at. Racing through traffic is a freakin blast but I could see sometimes just wanting to compete with other drivers (especially online) with no traffic.

You bet. I highly recommend you play the demo if you havent already, before purchasing it.

They remain smashed open.

So, I haven't read up on all the features and events available in the game, but are there "takedown" events similar to Burnout Revenge?

There are road rage events that challenge you to take down X number of vehicles.

I did play the demo and I wasn't sure about the whole open city thing. For one I don't like the idea of not being able to restart a race, but even moreso I'm worried about having to find your route in a race in a game like Burnout where you are driving at insane speeds. In Burnout Revenge I never had to worry about checking a map or finding the right turns, I could just race like mad and even bounce off the turns. How do you feel about this in Paradise?

It seems like the racing in Paradise is going to be more like NFS Most Wanted or any of the other NFS games where you are racing through the city and it just becomes too hard, IMO. You are racing against computer opponents that know exactly where they're going, but any wrong move and crash on your part and you're pretty much screwed.

Yup--that's exactly how I felt about the demo too. Check my post a few clicks up and see if it helps explain some of my feels.

The racing thing is a challenge for sure. So far about 1/2 of the races I've lost has been because I took a wrong turn, ended up on some bridge that took me to another land mass and I was basically screwed. It's pretty frustrating.

Oh, that reminds me of something I totally forgot to put in my impressions post. There have been two instances where I wanted to quit an event because I was so far behind. I couldnt figure out how to quit an event once it's started. I've tried the start button, select button...nothing, but it's got to be in there. Maybe hitting both the brake and the gas much in the same way you start en event?

can anyone confirm that Crash junction is back?

I really liked Burnout 2 Crash mode, especially with Dollar amounts shown per accident on the instant replay.
Burnout 3 was Meh for me.
If I want to race, I'd play Forza2 or PGR4

As has been stated in the thread several times, there are no more crash junctions. Its now "Showtime" mode... and nothing like the original.

I spent quite a bit of time with Paradise last night, and I'm loving it. I first worked through some events and got my class C license with relative ease. I'm really amazed at how huge this city is. I was screwing around and found a hydroelectric dam with a huge jump in the middle of it, so I blasted over that, then came across this quarry with a good amount of jumps and things to mess around in. To get down into the quarry? There's another nice jump to hit.

You know what the online component reminds me of? Crackdown. Its basically a big chat room where you and other people can do your own thing, or meet up to do things together. I saw one of the people on my friends list playing Paradise so I invited them in and we had a blast doing some of the challenges and just screwing around. Oh, and if you've got a vision camera and you get taken down? Laughter ensues. It auto takes your picture about 2 seconds after the crash and sends it to the person. No retakes of those pictures, so dont be picking your nose. I got caught mid-head scratch.

Showtime mode is surprisingly entertaining and you can enter it at any time... as soon as you do, the traffic in the area seems to increase exponentially. The key is to keep hitting cars and hit the busses.

In general, its a great game so far. There's SO much to do offline, then the online component just adds much more. I bet they'll be some nice DLC for it as well. I was skeptical of it after removing the structured racing format, but right now, I don't even really care that there's no 'restart'.

Yeah I played online for a bit last night. I got smoked in all the races cuz they were using formula 1 cars but it was fun.

I got some viral achievement I think. "Criterion Fever" Don't know how else I would have gotten it.

Criterion Fever is one where you take down someone who already has it, and you get it. It supposedly started with only the people at the Criterion studio.

I'll be picking this up on the way home from work tonight. If you guys see me playing online, invite me in. I've a camera and mic waiting!

I'll probably be on from 8-10 est, I'll keep my eyes open for you.
edit: scratch that , I probably wont be online tonight... tomorrow is looking better.

I picked up the last copy of this last night at my local gamecrazy and played it for about an hour before I went out. I played the demo and had fun, but having the full game is an absolute blast. I haven't tried the online mode yet, but probably will give it a shot tonight.

Anybody know if you can upload a digital picture of yourself for use on the driver's license?

You mean instead of using the Vision cam? As far as I know, no.

I just put an hour into it when I got home, and I like it so far. Those of you who complained about not knowing where to go during racing are idiots. If you want to follow the ideal line of streets, your turn signal turns on and you have an audial clue that this is happening well before you get to the turn. Plus, I started pausing to the map menu as soon as the race starts so I can plot out my course, which I find fun. One race ended up with all the cars separated, I ended up on the train tracks somehow, and had to plot my way out......this race I won. It seems that no matter where you end up in a race, the game will still direct you to the finish line with the turn signal. I really, really like this aspect.

I'm scared now, also, because the gates and billboards are going to become my Crackdown orbs. Too many times I've hit the e-brake and turned it around so I could crash through a gate. In one hour, I think I've crashed through almost 70 of the 100 🙂.

I also LOVE the stats in the pause menu. I also loved that it shows you how many crashes and billboards (and other stuff) in ecah area of the city. So those who are going to be like me and want to find all the crashes and billboards and everything else, it breaks it down how many of each are in certain sections of the city. There will be no more of what I did in Crackdown, which was running around that entire damn city looking for one last orb.

Having to take out cars to earn them is awesome as well. The first couple of races simply puts them in the junkyard, but I won a race that finally put the car on the roadways. I was boosting down a freeway when this car slung itself from an on-ramp onto the freeway, easily distinguishing itself from the rest of the computer herd of cars. A chase ensued 🙂.

The one thing I don't like so far is that even though it was praised that every single intersection has something to do, it seems like half of these intersections are boost runs for particular cars. If you aren't driving that car, you can't do the event.
