Can anyone elaborate on this? I was thinking of pre-ordering this weekend, but should I wait for steam? Does it matter?

Well, they gave the UK pre-ordering people that Physical Warfare Pack with SKS flash suppressor, T88 LMG, early access to the DAO-12 and exclusive flechette ammo for DAO-12, but they have NOT yet offered one to North America. It is unknown, but presumably the case, that if you preorder anywhere now, you will have to cancel your pre-order and re-pre-order once the N.A. PWP is announced, otherwise letting an existing pre-order stand as is with no action could possibly result in no PWP.

As for Steam, EA JUST opened up an upgrade/reboot/etc of EA Download Manager, called Origin, that apparently provides similar functions to Steam. Also, Demize recently demonized on his Twitter the cost of doing business with Steam. Therefore, Steam availability anytime soon is quite dubious. Maybe they will say something about it at E3.

I think this game will be great but why bother reserving now when it's unclear what you'll get. Especially a digital copy. If there is one thing I've learned about gaming is do not reserve anything until you 100% positive you want the game.

How are you coming to the conclusion that if you pre-order now you won't get the PWP? I seriously doubt EA is going to have so many different versions of the game to pre-order. It's pretty safe bet that if you pre-order the LE you'll get the PWP, that is assuming they release it to NA.

New Battlefield Blog Post: Highlights of the Week, June 3

It’s been another great week for the Battlefield team, and we’re hard at work to get the final touches ready before we head to the LA Convention Center for the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo. But before we dive into the E3 fray, we wanted to make sure you’re brought up to speed on all the great news and information released this week, so without further ado, let’s get to it!

Karl Magnus Troedsson, General Manager of DICE, unveiled a great tidbit today about what we’ll be showing at E3, and rest assured, you’ll want to keep tabs on this one. “Following our Battlefield 3 announcement earlier this spring, a lot of you have asked us for more info on multiplayer. Well, wait no further – we will be showing both single player and multiplayer gameplay at E3! You can expect new trailers and screenshots as well as in-depth press previews hitting next week.”

That’s right! After months of curiosity, we’ll be lifting the veil on the multiplayer of Battlefield 3, answering many of your questions. For those of you who can’t wait until Tuesday for the show to start (not that we blame you), Spike TV will be airing a brand new episode of Gamechangers on Monday, June 6 at 3:30p ET / 12:30p PT, highlighting Battlefield 3 and the entire Electronic Arts lineup for E3. If you don’t subscribe to Spike TV, fear not – this broadcast will also be available on GameTrailers.com.

The real treat, however, arrives when Battlefield 3 goes on the air on UStream, directly from the E3 show floor. We’ll be hosting over four hours of programming, including all the news, gameplay footage, interviews, fan reactions, and Q&As you could want, straight from the Battlefield booth at the L.A. Convention Center. The Battlefield 3 Live Stream goes live on Tuesday, June 7 at 1:30p PT until 5p PT and can be available on the Battlefield UStream Channel, Battlefield.com, and the Battlefield Facebook page. Be sure to tune in and we’ll see you on Tuesday!

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 launched on the iPad this week, bringing fans a new way to jump onto the Battlefield while on the go. Our dashing pals at Gun Club have the full skinny – “If you’ve already played BC2 on iPhone or iPod touch, you’ll find the bigger display and HD-quality graphics on your iPad gives this version a wider view of the maps and reveal all the gritty details, too. Combine the visual impact with the 14 single player missions, the intense jungle, arctic, and desert environments, plus the hardcore firepower, and you might forget this totally immersive experience is all contained on a mobile device.” Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is now available for the iPad and an updated version is now available on the iPhone. Download your copy today!

The Pwnd crew stopped by to chat with the DICE crew about the upcoming Back to Karkand expansion pack for Battlefield 3, bringing some great insight and information about the history of the maps included in the bundle, and how they’re being upgraded for Battlefield 3.

EA PWNED #7 on Youtube

The folks from ArsTechnica wrote a fascinating feature on the classic Wake Island map included in the Back to Karkand expansion. Not only does the author discuss the various aspects of the map within the game, but it’s strategic and historic importance as well, adding a great deal of context to why this map resonates so well, and remains one of the most popular Battlefield maps to date. Be sure to visit ArsTechnica to read the full story (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/...tm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss )!

YouTube user FamilyJules7X posted a home-made rendition of the Battlefield and… well… it’s awesome. Take a look!

A great, highly-stylized wallpaper came to our attention through DeviantArt, as user Seiikya brings some striking imagery from Battlefield: Bad Company 2, making for one of the more distinct BFBC2 backgrounds out there. Don’t take our word for it – see for yourself!

Like what you see? You can download the full-sized wallpaper here.

DeviantArt user DeFFik created a custom Battlefield 3 image that we particularly enjoy. He uses a propaganda-inspired art style, incorporating a nice, clean design with some imposing Battlefield imagery. Enjoy!

Thanks for tuning in and we’ll be back next week with even more Battlefield goodies for you to enjoy! Until then, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, leave us a note in the comments section and we’ll respond as soon as possible.

Now that we are on the eve of E3, any predictions for what kind of annoucements will be contrary to clear playerbase desires? Here are two, these aren't my only predictions but I'll let others say them:
1. 3D spotting will be unaltered from BC2, or perhaps made even more informative(ie they will give it ranging info).
2. Knife will be per BC2, not the equippable knife most indicate they want.

Neither of those are game-breaking, so I couldn't care less if BF3 retained them.

3D spotting is game breaking. It speeds up the pace of the game, diminishes stealth, etc. We don't want COD here.

The knife may not be game breaking, but when you get knifed through walls, from 10 feet away, from 10 feet below, or someone knifes you even though you're unloading in their chest, it's certainly annoying.

If you were spotted, you weren't stealthy, were you?? It does give players an edge, but not an insurmountable one, especially if you're rolling with a decent squad.

I have played enough to know that your claims amount to nothing more than bullshit. I don't remember you ever posting your game handle; maybe you're an even suckier version of pontifex, you know, that moron who claims he can't move two feet without getting killed.

I never said it was insurmountable. Since everyone can use it and everyone can spam Q at trees when they think they see someone, I'm not even sure it actually gives anyone an edge, except maybe snipe campers who sit and wait for triangles to shoot at and mortar. What it does do, though, is speed the game up. Unlike minimap spotting, it allows everyone on the map that has line of site to engage you because it is a Shoot Here Triangle. The biggest exceptions are Heavy Metal for example, where it's actually possible to have a mountain between you and snipers.

My game name is posted every time I post.

So play HQ mode if you don't want '3d' spotting, big deal. I actually like the spotting system as it brings it up into your field of vision. Knife, eh, they tweaked it and it's not near as bad as it was at the beginning. I have a feeling you have't played bc2 in awhile. Of either of those the knife was the most annoying, but I like it being a separate key and not a loadout selection.

I really don't care for 3d spotting. It makes it to easy to make distant pot shots at people you couldn't otherwise see.

I really don't understand the complaints about 3D spotting. It's an *option*. You aren't forced to play on servers with it enabled. So why would you all want *fewer* options and ways to play the game?? It totally defies logic.

Personally, I prefer *more* ways to customize the gaming experience. Even if I don't use them, I like having the choice.

is it an option? i haven't seen a softcore server that has just 3d spotting off.

it does make it easy to kill people just by spraying at the red triangle, especially if you got an LMG and you can spray at the triangle for a long period of time.

DICE said they've reworked the spotting system into some sort of a 3d indicator that will show distance as well as position. so things might be getting worse here, not better.

maybe they should let every soldier to equip smoke. smoke removed 3d markers and i find its very underused in this game. rush mode would be more interesting for sure if everyone had smoke nades.

Because 3d spotting is the standard. If you like options why don't they have a everybody has a jetpack mode? At some point you have to decide what is best for the CORE gameplay.

Everyone wants to play on ranked servers, so they can earn weapons, and try to get to 50.
EA/DICE is pretty strict on how a ranked server must be setup in order to be ranked.
The only to play on a ranked server with 3D spotting off is to play on a Hardcore server, which takes the mini-map totally away.
Just turning off 3D spotting makes your server unranked. It sucks.

Yes, they give you a lot of flexibility to set up your server just how you want it, but it will be unranked, and thus, empty.

the knife bugs me some, but its way better than that other game with its 10 foot knife perk

and its been ages since I got knifed from like 10 feet away, like a year+

on HC you dont get knifed while unloading into someone, they die trying.

This is the heart of the matter. If 3D herpspotting and derpcam could be individually turned off without losing ranked status, then enough servers would, in fact, turn them off that we wouldn't have to talk about it.

But DICE works in unintelligible ways sometimes.

Oh, I see the flaw in my logic now. I didn't understand that would cause the server to be unranked, which isn't acceptible.

Ok... I would still argue that hardcore mode is part of the core gameplay.

Ok... I would still argue that hardcore mode is part of the core gameplay.

The biggest thing I don't like about hardcore is that vehicles don't have an aiming sight. Infantry arms don't either unless you either ADS or look in the scope, BUT BC2 doesn't allow vehicles to ADS. You have to go by tracer fire. I mean Humvee type vehicles of course and mounted heavy MG. The camera remote MG on top of tanks doesn't need ADS, obviously.

Of course, using humvee MG in either mode is a bit pointless considering that, unlike BF2, people don't have to make a very good shot to headshot you out - they simply look in their 4X scope and you're dead.

I also don't like the fact that the minimap is totally gone. I can handle the fact that there is not even 2D spotting, while I like 2D, I can handle no spotting whatsoever too. But I do like seeing where I'm going on the minimap.

On the whole, though, hardcore can be a bit of a refreshing experience with shots from across the map killing you reduced by at least 50%.

Confirmed during E3 Presentation

Battlefield 3 coming in October, beta in September

June 6th, 2011 3:59 pm ET Scott Grill

The first-person shooter race just took an interesting turn as Electronic Arts has confirmed a release date for Battlefield 3 that puts it weeks ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and some gamers will get to experience it before the game is released.

Battlefield 3 will hit the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on October 25, 2011. The beta will arrive some time in September for each platform but no details have been announced yet.

Modern Warfare 3 is due out on November 8 so it will be interesting to see how shooter fans react to the choice of being able to get Battlefield 3 first.
