For people finding some battles difficult, I've found that changing tactics/strategies can make those battles only moderate. Also, swapping out some party members can be very effective. I prefer fights in my parties, but I recognize the strengths of rogues, mages, and clerics as well.
My standard party has been myself(RGR), Elanee, Kelgar, Shandra, and Sand. Kelgar is my heavy hitting fighter, I've got him using a badass great swords with superior weapon specialization in greatswords. Makes him lethal in combat. Shandra is a pure fighter as well, with focus on short swords and a good shield in the off hand. She doesn't deal the same level of damage as Kelgar, but her armor class is approaching 30, making her very hard to hit. My ranger is a little gimpy, unfortunately. I took the archer package for him without realizing that it removed the two weapon fighting feats for rangers, making my dual wielding ranger rather weak. I did find a dagger that granted those feats, but I cannot stop using the little dagger in the off hand now.
Elanee and Sand are my cannons, obviously, Sand more so. I've only done a little customization with Sand so far, since he's a relatively new character. Elanee also packs the bulk of my healing spells.
During certain missions, I will take Neeshka with me, but at my level, traps are a minor annoyance. I haven't encountered any chests or such that I would need to lock pick since I stopped using Neeshka as a staple character, though I have seen a number of doors that I've had to have Kelgar smash open.
