It could also be that Nvidia will introduce SLI2. I don't think Nvidia will launch a 7800Ultra so soon after the 7800GTX. People will be too pissed off. At least the ones who paid 600 for their GTX's early on.

Power of 3 could be:

SLI2
7800GT
7800vanilla and/or 7600's
Also possibility of a new chipset.

I don't know, people should never be pissed off when new tech comes out, no matter how soon it is after what they bought.

You buy hardware to get a level of performance, not to "have the best thing", at least if you're mature.

I do agree with you that a lot of people (unfortunately) think like that. For example, all the one who said "6800GT SLI now? No way! When the new cards come out they'll offer similar performance for less!". They forget that: a. there's always something better coming out, only difference is how long you'll tolerate waiting b. that you should be buying to achieve a level of gaming performance, not to say "Haha- I have the best card".

Its not about being mature, at least not for me. I dont have to have the fastest card, its about the money more to me. I am very glad the prices dropped on the GTX's so fast, but I would be lying if I said, Im glad I didnt wait. Waiting 3-4 weeks would have saved me about $160. Im a little annoyed about the cash. I thought I was getting a "good deal" (if that can be said about a $600 card), because in the past, PCI-E cards have been gouged after release for a while. So I jumped on it, thinking the price wouldnt drop so much. And I also sold my previous setup, so I had my whole new system, but video card. But as I said, I would have waited, if I knew.

What did you pay Rollo, $1200+ tax for both of yours? You could have saved close to $300, and gotten a brand name instead of reference cards. That doesnt just eat at you a little?

True. It's just that 7800GTX's debuted at 600 smackers and stayed there for a bit. Then seemed to drop really quickly and at least 2 OEM's are offering them for under 500.

"IF" there is an Ultra, I don't know that NV will release it this soon or will at the very least wait for the R520 debut. I still have my 6800GT that I paid 400 pieces of broccoli for. I love the card and it owns everything I play even with a 3.0GHz P4. Even FEAR was playable (albeit not sensational averaging 44 fps and low of 19 at medium settings) but I have no plans to update just yet. My "Home theater" endeavor is taking my attentions away from my PC lately. So unless I have to, my vid card/platform upgrage won't come til after Q1/Q2 2006. So, "Haha- I have the best card." is not exactly my style. Unfortunately as you said, there are plenty of folks who's style is just that.

Power of 3:

7800GTX
7800GT
7800G (ha! What do I win?! This has to be it!)

only 14hrs & 45min until you all start praising me.

I'm still kinda hoping for an AGP model somewhere in there, if not nVidia be Damned!

As an early adopter you KNOW you're going to pay more, it's the price of impatience. I can't begrudge anyone for getting a better deal than me though; even if it's the day after.

You can't let stuff like that bother you or you won't have a very happy life. Someone will ALWAYS get a better deal than you, it's just the way of it.

It doesn't eat at me at all, I wish vendors would lower the price to a dollar each so everyone in the world could have a 7800GTX. I decided what they were worth to me the night they launched and paid it, no point dwelling on what they cost now.

How is it that this is still being discussed? The answer has been stated, multiple times now, and yet you folks are still bantering back and forth about what it *might* be.

I knew I would be paying more, but I didnt think it would drop over $100 in a few weeks. Im not mad people got it cheaper than I did, not at all.

I just wish I had of waited.. especially if I had gotten two of them. I enjoy the card, but I could do a lot with $160..

I believe that in an effort to have marketing pizzaz all the way around, nvidia will go with this set of rankings:

GT for base model
GTX for Midgrade
Ultra for top of the line

your probably right...it would seem that those rankings are much more marketing efficient.

LoL GT is base only for us. It's really like this

Midrange
------------
7600 (GT)

High End
----------------
7800GT - omfg cheapass
7800GTX - Ok now you're talking
7800U - Yes this is XTREME.

well, on the www.overclockers.co.uk site they have that days to go banner thing on their frontpage amongst the usual section options, but it says below the banner

Arriving 11th August we have NVIDIA's
latest graphics card with stock
available to purchase on the day.
Prepare to be amazed once again..

now, that statement would imply its a better card than the GTX, otherwise why say amazed again, either that or they are doing a lesser card that is roughly equal to the 6800 Ultra but for less money than the 6800U currently costs....
Also it says card in the singular, so maybe the other two powers are something else such as new tech on the card or a new DVD program or who knows what....
As for the new card assuming its just one, if it is superior, is it the clock/ram speeds, or just a 512Mb card?...heh...the latter would be a let down, the former would be more exciting......
i think i guessed before, going on this my reguess (if its differnt) is this..
1)Better card.
2)perfectly working SLI without the need for a bridge connector.
3)dunno about the third power...lol....got stuck on this one...

edit: mebbe they gonna whack an HDMI connector on the card?...that would be sweet..heh

Anyways, if you live in a city where cost of living is high, chances are your pay is also higher for the same job somwhere else where cost of living is low. From what I remember Cali and New York rank one of the highest in terms of cost of living. I'm a nurse here in Houston, and I make a pretty good living. Looking at what my cousins make in Cali who are also nurses, it sounded real good for me to move there, but then saw the cost of living, and it evens out. So a 170,000.00 home here in Houston, translates to close to half a mill in Cali, so my cousins says.

But one advantage to living in a "High cost of living" state is that you can purchase several other items where the market is stable world wide. For instance, whether you live in CA or Florida, you can purchase your BMW 3 Series for the same price. Just have it shipped? Like $500 only... Ya know? So, in some ways, if the wages compensate for the high cost of living, you will actually do better with commodity items and thus, have a better life-style.

Its like this:

House Cost in CA: $500,000
House Cost in MN: $300,000

Wages in CA 35/hr
Wage in MN 20/hr

BMW M3 Purchased in MN and transported to CA :$53,000 + 500 (Shipping) Total for CA = $53,500
BMW M3 Purchased in MN for MN: 53,000. Total for M3 MN = $53,000

Which is why you see a lot of nice cars in California, because in many ways a higher cost of living can be better. Of course, it all varies. Sometimes the wages do not conpensite for high cost of living... Sometimes they do... It is all a trade-off.

Latest does not mean fastest. It just means, well latest. 7800GT would be later than a 7800GTX, but it won't be faster now will it? The amazed part, I would think, is for there to once again be immediate availability and plenty of quantity. In other words. No paper launch twice in a row. We were all amazed at the availability of the 7800GTX "at launch". So I'm guessing Nvidia plans to do it again with the 7800GT and maybe others.
And just out of curiousity, what is the big deal about SLI having a bridge connector? Is it in your way or do you think it's going to be difficult to install? Curious is all.

um, u seemed to pick on the word latest, i dont believe i commented using the word latest as a term to mean best.....also any references i made to the new card were followed or preceeded by words like 'assume', in other words i wasnt implying i personally know whats being released or its relevence in the range.
Also they have said they have it in stock, so how is that amazing? yes, for the 7800GTX launch it was amazing, if their idea of amazing is to manage it twice in a row, when its obvious they are kicking out cores and have a secure memory deal going then to call a lesser card release amazing is quite frankly going to be a bit of a let down in my book..

Ok, my serious defence over.....heh, now to answer your simply curious question, without the bridge connector you can (possibly without or with bios flashes) SLI cards that dont have the little terminal cut out on the top run of the card.....and it might even mean, like crossfire, a way to SLI cards from different manufacturers etc, providing they are using the same basic core.....that would be a fairly good thing, it would help bury crossfires major unique point dont ya think? its only a thought.....

neway, i've discovered what the power of three really means......
its just the 7800GT, but they decided to showcase the news of this launch in Japan first, then on the translation back to english it got skewed and turned in to 'The Power of Three.....whats happening is with every card bought you get a pack of nVidia green colour glow in the dark condoms......................

(supposed to be Packet of three....geddit?..heh...ok, shoot me now...lol)

The Power of Three isn't the 7800 GT if the NDA people are correct. But it so happens 7800 GT will be released on the same day, according to rumors.

Edit: spelling (or lack thereof)

The 7800GT launch has nothing to do with the Power of 3, no matter how many people try to lump it together. They are not one and the same.

From what ive heard its nothing to do with the 7800GT

Its to do with features that all cards should have rather than the card itself
