So, according to a UK retail site(Overclockers.co.uk), the Titan Z is not cancelled. They already have the cards.

WCCFTech says that Nvidia are only doing software changes, so basically drivers. My guess is that they are going to allow the card to go up to higher temperatures to get higher clocks to bridge the gap.

They should just scrap the card and go for the 790, and swallow their pride.

The 290 is cheaper NOW than the 780, but for the majority of it's existence it hasn't been cheaper and it's certainly debatable about which is faster, especially after Nvidia's recent several driver improvements.

I got my 780 for $410 after MIR and before selling off my game bundle (which I sold for $40) back in December. My gtx780 clocks to 1202 on the core and 6900mhz on the vram without any voltage modifications. Oh, and it's running on a 450 watt PSU. That is nothing particularly special about a gtx 780, as many can hit 1250-1300mhz. I challenge any 290 to keep up with my gtx780 without water cooling and without plowing through 375 watts before adding in all the other system components. Won't happen. My 780 is faster than 99% of all air-cooled overclocked 290's and probably most water-cooled 290's as well.

Bulky air coolers like the Powercolor PCS+ allow the 290s to hit 1100-1200s at which point the are faster than the air cooled 780 like yours out there.
Take your 780 on water, than you forget that the 290s could be put on water too.

As for running on a 450 PSU, you are probably limiting the card.
It would actually clock faster than 1202/6900 if you had more Watts to throw at it. You have no proof that you aren't holding back the card with that meager PSU.

I got my XFX from online retailer (Superbiiz) a month ago for 420... Gonna put on a G10 bracket with Corsair h50 on it, lets see how the 290x does under water. Probably better than Titan for half the price.

Make sure to get a fan on the VRM & some good thermal pads.
If you have Hynix RAM & can do 1500-1600 on RAM & 1200 on the core, you can smoke 95% of the Titans out there.

I had to alt-tab out and in to fix it. The colors were really messed up in Trine 2 with the 290 and confirmed by my friend that also had a 290. With the 780 it was fine. I also had some HDMI audio issues on AMD. Overall, I am more satisfied with my 780. I was able to sell my 290 at the peak of their crypto value and purchase a 780 + pocket some change.

Before I got my 290x Lightning, I had a 780 Classy with Hynix RAM, that I benched in Valley at 1420/1927 on AIR with zero artifacts.
Granted it was at 10 Fahrenheit ambients outside with 100% fans & no case windows on.
It was still crazy & that was surely one of those Golden cards people talk about.
Wish I could have kept it, would've been able to bench 1600 with a full cover block.

All this aside, the poster I quoted claiming his 1202/6900 780 is faster than even 99% of water cooled 290s out there is pure stupidity.

That's very strange, because GK104 with 25% less shaders and less memory bandwidth to boot almost matched Tahiti clock for clock, arguably even matching it at 1080p, the performance delta increased along with resolution and MSAA but it was still within 10% or so. In some games surpassing tahiti with ease and coming close to titan. And now hawaii is comfortably faster clock for clock with 2806 shaders versus 2880' of GK110 and clock for clock R290 with 2560 shaders is even slightly faster than Titan with 2688 shaders. In the past NV could compete with 25% less shaders and now they need 5% more. That's massive and 512bit bus doesn't explain it either since memory is clocked lower and bandwidth is very similar.

That's just DGLee. He regularly posts these sorts of rubbish articles. What he often does is simulate products based on expected clockspeeds, so that's what I expect he's doing here too.
