NV 12VHPWR issues revisited

My friend, it is obviously just a plug not being flush problem. A user error. Totally just user error. Not design error or quality issues. Totally not that. That would be a crazy assertion.
 
I bought a ASUS 4070 Super Dual today and the connector does not fit. I tried several times, being very careful with alignment and applying so much force I was scared the connector would pop off, and I cannot get it to have less than a ~1.5mm gap. In fact there is so much gap that the red "no power" GPU LED comes on if I flip the switch on the PSU.

Unsure if male or female component is the issue. I need to get a PSU 12VHPWR cable from Corsair and see if it fits.

Not too happy with NVIDIA at the moment.

Yeah the one from the box. I can return to microcenter if the Corsair wire doesn't work out. In that scenario, or RMA, I will be stuck with my iGPU for some time since these cards are selling out pretty quickly.

Ah. The infamous FOMO that forces users to justify living with defective cards.

Return to Microcenter. Have their staff help you with checking to make sure the card works on their premises before you leave. If they refuse to do that or give you a replacement, you are better off instead of trying to make a defective improperly designed connector work somehow and potentially damaging your card even further, either immediately or several weeks or months down the line.

Seriously, FOMO is a crap feeling to give in to. Plenty of options coming for you this year from AMD and Intel. Just gotta wait 6 to 8 months. Settle with a used card if you have to. But don't put yourself through disappointment after paying full price. That is just sad desperation.

Yeah, I will try to remember to get some whenever I try again. I cannot rule out the possibility I am just being an idiot, but I cannot see how. Poster below seems to think it isn't worth trying, but I disagree. My 2 hour round trip to Microcenter is expensive in terms of my time, whereas simply trying another cable is easy enough.

On the PNY card it fit easily. Maybe a small amount of force required to seat it flush. Not as much force as a ATX power pin adapter, but more than an 8-pin PCIE adapter.

There wasn't much tactile sense that it was flush though like with PCIE connectors, but this is well-documented already. You kind of just have to carefully inspect it from all angles to be sure.

Edit: I do not have the PNY card anymore so I cannot swap the connectors to see if there is a difference. Not sure if that was clear.

Amazon brought the cable much faster than I thought, some photos below. Conclusion is that the NVIDIA-provided adapter must have been out of spec. The corsair one fits just fine.

Photos compare insertion with approximately the same amount of force applied to the cable. No amount of force will make the NVIDIA one that came in the ASUS box go all the way in. Pretty sure the pins would fail in shear before you could seat it.

Seems like a good way to cook a RTX 4090 if the user doesn't already know this is a problem...

Just in case it later melts and you can no longer unplug it, check if you are not voiding the graphics card warranty by not using the supplied adapter.
 
I can check, but I doubt it. ATX 3.0 power supplies all come with dedicated 12VHPWR cables after all. It's just that nobody owns them yet.

It's the same problem @shifty803 had, it wouldn't lock into place even with force.

From the article: Igor's Lab determined the root cause of the issue, and says the PCI-SIG specifications for the 12V2x6 connector do not specify the exact dimensions of the connector itself, leaving cable manufacturers to do whatever they want.

What an absolute clown-show.
 
What, you want professional quality design with your $100+ psu's, custom cables and $1000+ graphics cards? Crazy consumers. Just be happy, smile at the pretty rays and be excited for next gen product.
 
When I had a non Super 4080 here I am pretty sure that while having the side-panel open and checking/pushing the cable/plug I saw a single flash of light coming from beneath the taping. So likely there was a spark at that moment.
