Starship troopers is as misunderstood in film form as the book was - it's supposed to be a critique of the jarhead mentality and militarism, not instead a glorification of the aforementioned.

poor Heinlein must be turning in his hyper-dimentional grave

Maybe I need to watch Starship Troopers with my adult hat on. Last time I watched it I was like 10.

Blood Simple - 8.0/10

The first Coen brothers feature, and a very good one in their lineup. It has a few minor shortcomings here and there that you wouldn't expect from them today, but the movie really shows off their style, and has some absolutely unforgettable scenes on par with their best work. It's in line stylistically with No Country for Old Men and the darker moments of Fargo, so if your a fan of those movies or the Coen brothers in general, I'd say you should check it out.

I'd be interested in your specific criticisms. "Blood Simple" is one of very few movies that come to mind when I try to think of a flawless movie.

I thought Blood Simple was a great movie. 9/10 for me. Some of the violent scenes got a visceral reaction from me that most movies cannot come close to causing.
Yeah, the scene where
Visser is attempting to pull his hand free from the knife
was especially effective, and just the creativity alone of that scenario was fantastic.

:Edit:

A few very minor nit-picky technical things like unintentionally visible edits, some ADR etc. Just tiny things likely from the budget or being their first feature, only mentioned it since they are now such perfectionists with all the little details. I'll likely be picking it up on BluRay, I really enjoyed it.

It's part of the Coen Bros Blu-Ray Collection. It's a box set that was very reasonably priced a few years ago.

Lucy - 1/10. First 5 minutes are cool then it goes completely downhill from there. Don't even bother watching. Just go see Limitless again.

Hercules - 8/10. Didn't expect much. Came out relatively surprised. It's an action movie. Go in there thinking that and you'll be fine.

Goodbye Lenin, Gummo, and Memento. I had seen all three but I watched them recently. I am going to see Interstellar this week.

Limitless was actually not that bad and it is at least somewhat plausible. dude just got super smart, he didn't get godlike super powers.

i wanna go watch big hero 6

but am afraid people will think it's creepy if a single guy in his 30's goes there :(

Defuse the situation by going all out to make friends with the 10 year old sitting next to you. Shower him with attention. Ply him with free candy. Put your arm around him to let him know you're there for him. If he gets up to go to the men's room, offer to follow him into the stall itself, for protection.

Should he look scared and attempt to cry out, hush him up by covering his mouth with your hands. You'll be a hero! That's why others will be recording you on their phones. Nobody likes loud distractions in a theater.

Hope this helps. ;)

I saw it in theaters. I have fond memories of it. Mostly because it was the first time I ever walked out of a movie. It is horrendous crap.

At Wikipedia: They made a sequel in 2004. Why? It was direct to video. Oh, atleast that part makes sense.

Interstellar put me to sleep.
The first 30 or so minutes all dialog and mostly Matthew McConaughey dialog.
I never realized listening to Matthew McConaughey go on and on and on is like listening to the MS text-to-speech app reading the terms and conditions of the Apple iTunes store.
Then, the film tried too hard to be spacey scifi flick tossing in every weird scifi phenomenon under the stars.
Lets see, we have the dust bowl, and The Poseidon Adventure, Black Holes, red holes, yellow holes, worm holes, and Matt Damon.
And last but not least, the PEZ android kid.
Top it all off with a little, baseball.
They could have done better.

And another film now showing, the Wick flick.
Didn't they just do this a month ago with another movie?
A dog, the mob, guns guns guns and Russian bad guys?
I can't remember the film, but same plot, including the cute dog.
What was that other film called? This same retired mob guy role/cute dog/Russian bad guys?
It was out like one or two months ago?

And I didn't buy Reeves in the mucho guy highly trained killer role.
If you watch the shots closely, Reeves was terrible at acting the assault fight scenes.
Frame speedup was way too obvious, to make the shot look like an action shot, instead of
some Pippi Long Stockings has a bad day, shot.
I mean really...
One shot, Reeves lifts his leg and the guy flies over the railing.
Reeves didn't even touch the guy with his leg.
Maybe he cut one and the oder caused bad guys to fly over rails?

At least the coming attractions had a few hopefuls coming out around Christmas time.
The new Johnny Depp looks promising, but previews can be deceiving.
Especially with Johnny Depp films.

Matthew McConaughey ... I can't stand him. He sounds like a drunken red neck that smokes too much pot in everything he does. So, now there is a movie that has an astronaut that sounds like a drunken red neck that smokes too much pot .

Oblivion -- <Rant Alert> I'm not in the mood to award any points to this movie. It repeatedly and consistently and thoroughly insulted my intelligence. I guess that's about par for these over-funded, poorly acted, shallowly yet pompously written types of movies where the plot holes are as big as the universe. Ugh.

Apparently, the truly hot Asian actress whose name I forget but should know grew up in Chester County, Pa., not that far from where I live in Bucks County, Pa., and even closer to where I grew up in Delaware County Pa., because when she first saw that famous painting N.C. Wyeth painting Christina's World she said it reminded her of home.

Yeah, right.

Christinasworld.jpg

Referencing that painting in this movie was discount, dollar store profundity at its worst, lipstick on a pig. </Rant Alert>

But, hey, at least the painting brought back a couple of good memories for me. One was taking my Mom to the small, circular Wyeth museum at her behest . . . one of the last good things I did with and for her. The other was once getting laid primarily (I think) because I recognized and knew the painting in this rich girl's apartment when (I think) she thought I wouldn't.

If you enjoyed the movie, please pay me no mind . . . what do I know anyway? I gave it a shot. I should have known better.

Please, Perk--contribute more to this thread. That was awesome!

That's what I got out of the film. Did people not get that?

:hmm:

I mean, I can see the confusion when those sequels were made for all the mouth breathers and completely diluted the first film, but this is the same thing that happened with "First Blood" and those terrible "Rambo" movies that were shit out for summer $$$$.

The visuals didn't do it for me, but as I said, I was watching it at home in 2D.

I understand the film had some flaws. The story was pretty shallow, or at least it left a lot to wonder about the characters so it's harder to connect with them.

But that first scene where Bullock is spinning into oblivion was one of the most claustrophobic, mind-numbing sequences I've ever seen on the big screen.

Propaganda from what I've read which is why book lovers hated the movie so much.

KT

I'll admit was a lot of propaganda, when it was written in the 50's also, and Heinlein was a pretty hard core conservative even for those days.

Even looking past that I expected the way the military functioned would be much better than infantry troops just running around in body armor, kinda of ruined it for me.

Was much different from the things they used in the book.

Grosse Pointe Blank 8/10 (Netflix) - I don't know why I like this movie. I guess I just like John Cusack for some reason. Minnie Driver looks good and honestly as long as Dan Akroyd gets a single line in a movie, I'm happy.

For some reason I have personally always liked Grosse Pointe Blank myself.

+1
