Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - 7/10
Meh. Done with stupid Apes movies. Didn't want to see this, but it was so well reviewed i figured i should watch. Nope. Not a fan, and when the Apes do better acting than the humans...
Technically it's a good movie, so i cannot fault it too badly from a critical standpoint, just absolutely zero rewatchability for me. Barely made it through it.

You're ruining great movies when you watch pirate copies.

[edit]
OK. You said "theater." I had a hard time believing that you wouldn't like this movie. It's great.

Gotta disagree here. Gravity is one of the most thrilling movies of all time. The visuals and sound on the big screen floor you. The long shot where Sandra Bullock is spinning into blackness and the camera somehow goes inside her helmet to show you what she's seeing?! That kind of experience is enough to make it an outstanding film despite the flat characters. You gotta rate movies within the genre they belong to, and whether they accomplish what they set out to do: A thrilling 3D experience about survival in space.

The visuals didn't do it for me, but as I said, I was watching it at home in 2D. I guess I could have busted out the 3D glasses for my tv, but I didn't. I still don't think visuals would've done anything to improve the movie for me.

That said, I have dual SVS PB12-NSD's in my little 13'x14'x8' movie room. They're a ridiculous amount of overkill, but in some movies -- and Gravity was one -- the sound is nothing short of incredible. I actually prefer my audio setup to the setup in the independent (and actually affordable) theater. Can't wait for Guardians of the Galaxy to be released on bluray, the audio on the
spaceship fighting scene ... I guess that's what I'd call it ...
was very underwhelming in the theater but I have a feeling it was more the equipment than the audio track.

Olive Kitteridge -- 10/10 -- Not 10 as in perfect, just 10 as in WOW for this 4 hour gut punch of unglamorous, often uncomfortable reality.

The scene in the hospital while they're being held as hostages is as brutally real as it gets, but not in the least in the cliched way you'd expect.

Thelma and Louise - 7.5/10

Always saw it on Ridley Scott's IMDB page, but didn't see it until yesterday. An ultimately fun movie, but with fairly serious subject matter throughout. Only small issue I had with it was the very dated soundtrack and score, but I was expecting as much since early Hans Zimmer can be unfortunately cringey.

Serpico - 8.5/10

Picked this up on BD, so watching it for the second time. Really a classic character driven story, and I think I liked it more the second time around. The BD presentation is great for a film of it's time, and the remixed 5.1 audio helps keep it feel fresh. I do have another complaint about the score though. It's not necessarily bad, but I think it has a tendency of deflating the rather tense script, just not quite suited to the movie, but it's a minor complaint. Highly recommended.

Might have to look at it out of curiousity now

*edit* It's a series ? mini-series ? I can look that up I guess.

*editing* the *edit* yeah mini it looks, HBO is good at those, surprised I hadn't watched it if they had done it.

Holy cow, Netlfix actually has a bunch of good new stuff on streaming. OK ... mostly old stuff but damn!

http://instantwatcher.com/

Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1993) are two. I will not show these to my kids as I bought them the blue ray 4 movie set for Xmas. OK, bought for me under the guise of it's for them ;-)

It is on HBOGO, what was I thinking.

After watching the first one, that is some pretty interesting setup, I'll be watching the other 3 after work tomorrow.

That is some outstanding writing there, but I guess it is derived from a supposedly un-adaptable Pulitzer Prize winning novel.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

*edit* Just finished watching the other three, that is pretty deep.

Excellent Mini-Series.

I think there are a many Emmys in the works there.

I've never given anything a 10, but that is very close and have trouble finding a fault with it, really.

So I'll give it a 9.999/10.

I thought at first in the 3d the short Bill Murray thing was going to be a lame walk on, but it was redeemed in the last one.

The Thelma and Louise track on Hans Zimmer's live album, The Wings of a Film, is excellent.

I know a lot of people enjoy his older scores, but I don't think many of them have aged well. He used a lot of period keyboards and rock instruments in the 80's and 90's that instantly date any movie they are in. His orchestral scores are rather timeless however, so I prefer it when he and other composers ditch the contemporary stuff.

The album he is talking about was orchestral. For example, "Driving Miss Daisy's" theatrical Sountrack was all electronic but the DMD tracks on "Wings of a Film" are orchestrated. Good stuff.

Ah, that would likely be an improvement.

I just watched this, I'd give it a 7.5, good movie for what it is but nothing OMG. Was a well done action sci-fi flick but falls into the same type of story as most other movies do near the end.

Oblivion -- <Rant Alert> I'm not in the mood to award any points to this movie. It repeatedly and consistently and thoroughly insulted my intelligence. I guess that's about par for these over-funded, poorly acted, shallowly yet pompously written types of movies where the plot holes are as big as the universe. Ugh.

Apparently, the truly hot Asian actress whose name I forget but should know grew up in Chester County, Pa., not that far from where I live in Bucks County, Pa., and even closer to where I grew up in Delaware County Pa., because when she first saw that famous painting N.C. Wyeth painting Christina's World she said it reminded her of home.

Yeah, right.

Christinasworld.jpg

Referencing that painting in this movie was discount, dollar store profundity at its worst, lipstick on a pig. </Rant Alert>

But, hey, at least the painting brought back a couple of good memories for me. One was taking my Mom to the small, circular Wyeth museum at her behest . . . one of the last good things I did with and for her. The other was once getting laid primarily (I think) because I recognized and knew the painting in this rich girl's apartment when (I think) she thought I wouldn't.

If you enjoyed the movie, please pay me no mind . . . what do I know anyway? I gave it a shot. I should have known better.

i agree that the end didn't really work well, but the rest of the film made up for it.

I'm still PO'd about the mess Starship Troopers was in 1997, if someone had made it like Edge of Tomorrow and did it right would have been a classic.

Paul Verhoeven gimped that one in my lifetime I imagine.
