Wtf Starship Troopers was an awesome movie!!!

After reading the original Heinlein in the 60's and waiting on it to be made someday, I'll politely agree to disagree.

Was about like watching TLOR trilogy movies if Tolkien hadn't specifically stated under no circumstances is Disney allowed to get a hold of it.

Oblivion -- <Rant Alert> I'm not in the mood to award any points to this movie. It repeatedly and consistently and thoroughly insulted my intelligence. I guess that's about par for these over-funded, poorly acted, shallowly yet pompously written types of movies where the plot holes are as big as the universe. Ugh.

Apparently, the truly hot Asian actress whose name I forget but should know grew up in Chester County, Pa., not that far from where I live in Bucks County, Pa., and even closer to where I grew up in Delaware County Pa., because when she first saw that famous painting N.C. Wyeth painting Christina's World she said it reminded her of home.

Yeah, right.

Christinasworld.jpg

Referencing that painting in this movie was discount, dollar store profundity at its worst, lipstick on a pig. </Rant Alert>

But, hey, at least the painting brought back a couple of good memories for me. One was taking my Mom to the small, circular Wyeth museum at her behest . . . one of the last good things I did with and for her. The other was once getting laid primarily (I think) because I recognized and knew the painting in this rich girl's apartment when (I think) she thought I wouldn't.

If you enjoyed the movie, please pay me no mind . . . what do I know anyway? I gave it a shot. I should have known better.

Oblivion was kind of a mess. It really was just a composite of ideas from previous Sci-fi flicks; some worked and some did not, but all of them felt derivative. A friend of mine also found it misogynistic. I did not, but I am also quite terrible at noticing that stuff.

it was a fun movie when you ignore the existence of the book

Never read the book and have zero interest in doing so. The movie is fucking amazing.

what was the book like?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starship_Troopers

Military innovations

Further information: Powered armor
In addition to Heinlein's political views, Starship Troopers popularized a number of concepts and innovations in military engineering which have since become broadly present in other science fiction and some of which have been paralleled in real-life research. The novel's most noted innovation is the powered armor exoskeletons used by the Mobile Infantry.[27] These suits were controlled by the wearer's own movements, but powerfully augmented a soldier's strength, speed, weight-carrying capacity (which allowed much heavier personal armament), and jumping ability (including jet and rocket boost assistance), and provided the wearer with improved senses (infrared vision and night vision, radar, and amplified hearing), a completely self-contained personal environment including a drug-dispensing apparatus, sophisticated communications equipment, and tactical map displays. Their powered armor made the Mobile Infantry a hybrid between an infantry unit and an armored one.
Another concept the book pioneered was that of "space-borne infantry". The heavily mechanized units of M.I. troops were attached to interstellar troop transport spacecraft, which then delivered them to planetary target zones, by dropping groups of Mobile Infantrymen onto the planet surface from orbit via individual re-entry capsules (hence the book's slang term "cap troopers" for M.I. troops). The uses for such a force—ranging from smash-and-burn raids, to surgical strikes, conventional infantry warfare, and holding beachheads—and the tactics that might be employed by such soldiers are described extensively within the novel. The tactics, training, and many other aspects of this futuristic elite force are carefully detailed: everything from the function of the armored suits themselves, to the need for multiple variants of powered armor, to the training of personnel in both suit operations and the specialized unit tactics that would be needed, to the operational use of the suits in combat.

So basically, if you'd read the book and went to see it, he made an abortion of it in reality.

:hmm:

So I'm guessing it didn't have the tone that the film does. I'll have to re-read JW's review

It's water under the bridge I guess.

I'd still like to see Starship Troopers done right in my lifetime, but that won't happen I imagine.

In the book the MI were like small fast moving tanks, like Mechwarrior, that had tactical nuke capabilities even.

Blood Simple - 8.0/10

The first Coen brothers feature, and a very good one in their lineup. It has a few minor shortcomings here and there that you wouldn't expect from them today, but the movie really shows off their style, and has some absolutely unforgettable scenes on par with their best work. It's in line stylistically with No Country for Old Men and the darker moments of Fargo, so if your a fan of those movies or the Coen brothers in general, I'd say you should check it out.

Good to hear your opinion, Len. I freely admit my review was a cranky rant. I'm not a natural fan of the genre, and I'm just not a fan of huge plot holes, mediocre writing, and pseudo-profundity, but I found myself at home on a Saturday night with nothing else to do, so I thought I'd give it a chance. My bad.

Plus, the Asian actress (so unbelievably luscious, btw, I really should know her name) is a decidedly subpar actor.

Featuring repeated close-ups of her trying to emote just added to my geezer rage, especially when you can flick on the screen on any given night and see CHILD actors in otherwise forgettable roles deliver amazingly naturalistic and nuanced performances. :(

Lastly, I don't know where your friend's misogyny charge comes from at all. As a strong, proud, black woman myself, I believe I would have noticed. ;)

Don't. I find that movie hilarious. Honestly one of Sandler's best; not saying much I know, but it slots in right behind Madison and Gilmore for me. :whiste:

Neighbors 5/10 - If that really. Recommended by several friends who thought it was hilarious. I think they were just BS'ing me. Wouldn't watch again that's for sure. Whoever it is playing the wife should stop acting.

Cannabis Kid 7/10 (Netflix) - Entertaining story of a kid smuggling pot and becoming a drug lord. It was fun. I don't know if it was based on a true story, I might have missed that, but it did have the fate of all involved at the end.

Grosse Pointe Blank 8/10 (Netflix) - I don't know why I like this movie. I guess I just like John Cusack for some reason. Minnie Driver looks good and honestly as long as Dan Akroyd gets a single line in a movie, I'm happy.

Edge of tomorrow - 7.5/10 - good enough, enjoyed it.
Dawn of the planet of the apes - 7.5/10, same comments as above

Interstellar - 8.25/10 - very good, possibly my favorite this year. But some over the top cheese knocks it down for me and I'm not sure I could rate this higher than inception. I also feel like it'll lose something in non-optimal viewing environments

I thought Blood Simple was a great movie. 9/10 for me. Some of the violent scenes got a visceral reaction from me that most movies cannot come close to causing.

Saw Grand Budapest Hotel last night. 9/10. Loved it.

A lot of unreality/dreamlike scenes that made it an escape from reality, but somehow kept everything grounded and I related to the movie on a human level and cared for the characters.

I wanted to love GBH but just couldn't do it... took me 3 tries to finally watch it once.

Maybe I'll try again some day when I can give my 100% attention to it

Do it, Big Hero 6 is awesome. I give it an 8/10.

The only problem I had with it is that it's a bit too predictable, but otherwise it's fantastic. Baymax steals the show and the environment of San Fransokyo is amazingly well done.

Also, stick around for the post-credits scene. :)
