Strikes me that this is the sort of story pro-gun folk like (I offer it as a gift to them - and out of curiosity as to what people think of it).

I still don't think it's worth the cost, not least as both of them were armed and both ended up being shot...would be better if it hadn't happened in the first place...would the guy have broken in and been so aggressive in the first place had he not been armed? But I suppose this is the sort of thing that gun ownership is supposed to be for...also I'm baffled why the writer felt the need to tell us what time it happened 'in UK time' - what does it add to the story to know that when it's 2am in Idaho it's 9am here?)

The issue with gun ownership isn’t that guns are NEVER useful to protect your life, just that they make their owners more likely to die overall so they are a net negative if staying alive is your goal.

It is really a very simple facts vs. emotion argument. People feel in their gut that they are safer with a gun and so facts be damned.

For everyone one of these cases, there’s going to be 50 where the disabled child plays with an improperly stored gun.

Yeah, wouldn't argue otherwise. Can't say I'm hugely sorry that a guy who would assault and threaten an 85-year-old woman ended up dead, but I wouldn't argue an occasional case balances out all the dead children. And I also wonder if he'd have broken in in the first place had he not himself been armed.

Middle school shooting(?) in Mount Horeb, WI. 14yo was killed before ever entering the school.

Mount Horeb is s small town of mainly Scandanavian and German immigrant offspring. It's a "quaint" little town that even has a Scandanavian troll theme. I'd be surprised to even see this in Madison which is 30 miles east, but in Mount Horeb? That's even more unexpected. Just shows it can happen anywhere that the wrong people have access to firearms.

I gave up keeping track. There have been multiple every week, sometimes two or more in a single day.

And the SCROTes have essentially endorsed it.

'Suspect dead, 9 wounded including children in shooting at Detroit area water park'

'June 15 (Reuters) - An armed man shot and injured nine people, including two children, at a water-park near Detroit on Saturday evening before shooting himself after being cornered by police, authorities said.'

Motives or specific targets are often not immediately apparent, but this one sure seems 'random'. Shooting up a water park where it's all kids and families...

Mental illness. Something as simple as "why do other people have the right to be happy with their families and not me? Solution: kill 'em all!".
Or even more simplistic- he just wanted to shoot anyone, and where would people be mostly unarmed and defenseless? A water park. Just speculation, of course.

And of course it's mental illness, that doesn't even need to be said. It's always a given with mass shooters IMO.

I tend to think mental illness is usually a product of social, cultural and economic factors though. Sometimes, maybe, it's a purely biological issue, but even then it reflects a failure of the health care system.

So I don't think blaming 'mental illness' lets the wider society off the hook (not assuming that's the intent of anyone in invoking that, but I just don't see a clear-cut dividing line between 'mentally ill' and 'ideologically driven' shooters)

Anyone willing and intending to shoot and kill numerous people, many of them 'innocent', is not right in the head. Especially when it involves children.

And while genetic factors can contribute to the likeliness of mental health issues, I agree that the higher-contributing factors are societal/environmental/nurtured.

The only way they're actually "Right in the head” (I hate that fucking term in this context) is they’re smart (COWARDLY) enough to pick the softest of the soft targets.

Ugh…

Yeah, lack of access to mental illness is why this doesn't happen anywhere else.

Right, besides the lack of 'real' regulation in many states (or federally), and lack of red flag laws. Even people known to have mental illnesses can get a gun just as easy as anyone else. Even when there are clear warning signs.

Far too easy for anyone to get their hands on a gun, some who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near them.

U.S. surgeon general declares firearm violence a public health crisis

Vivek H. Murthy called on the nation to address gun violence with the vigor used to reduce deaths and injuries from tobacco and motor vehicle crashes.

As of 2020, firearm-related injuries had become the leading cause of death for children and adolescents ages 1 to 19 in the United States. Gun-related deaths for youths exceed those from vehicular accidents, cancer and heart disease.

Woke nonsense, under a GOP regime these will simply be reclassified as bleeding of unknown origin or premature organ failure. There, we fixed it!

Currently ongoing.

Police are responding to possible shooting at a high school in Winder, Georgia (about an hour from Atlanta).

"Video from outside the school shows at least five ambulances and a large active police presence. A least one medical helicopter could be seen airlifting a patient from the scene.

A local hospital is receiving patients with gunshot wounds related to the incident, a hospital source told CNN."

Somewhere in America, the news is about to break.
Nothing can prepare you for the toll it's about to take.

-The Alternate Routes
Further lyrics:

Somewhere in America
the news is about to break
Nothing can prepare you for
The toll it’s gonna take
Nothing ever changes
Just the dates and the locations.
Somewhere in America
The news is about to break.

How long is too long
Before the words you can’t say
Just speak for you.

The years have been kind ma
I’ve got a son now of my own.
When I think of what I’ll tell him happened to you
I still don’t know.
That the worlds a much safer place
That kind of danger,
you won’t ever have to face.
I pray he lives to see that day
No idea what I’m going to say.

Somewhere in America
A phone’s about to ring
