And remember: lawsuits can, typically do, take months or years to process, even when you have a winning case, not to mention an expense of hundreds of thousands of dollars, commonly

Bah, if he had a claim he could get an emergency restraining order preventing LS from holding them hostage. he didnt.

Kamazon, I looked at webulexwebulex and apparently they give you your own IP address and free SSL. Looks like a great host for e-commerce. I may switch to them.

I would also like to remind everyone that has a static IP, they can get free domain name forwarding to their IP address at domaincow, part of tucows.com.

Anyone seen these before?? I haven't. I can't find a link to one either. Not on Seagate.com, not www.storage.ibm.com, not pricewatch... where are these drives? Who makes them?

Also:
> ...new Dual Pentium 4 1.6ghz...

Guess he really means Xeons. But the 1.6 was the Zeon MP if I remember right (1MB cache not 512K) and is quite expensive. Quick search of pricewatch shows 3 vendors total. Prices from $3830 to $6007 for a single add-on processor. Hmm...

Usually in any story there are 3 sides - person 1, person 2 and the truth.

I just can't believe people keep defending them after they keep hearing conflicting stories... They have the servers the LS "employee" is lying, they don't have the servers, they really do have the servers. Be up Monday, next Saturday, Sunday, Monday, 3rd Tuesday after Mardi Gras... I just understand why people still believe him with NO verifiable action taken for days! Name one verifiable POSITIVE action they have taken recently? Besides the attempt to sell even more unusable at the moment accounts? (tongue in cheek)

Also remember a couple of months ago? CW was so far behind in setting up accounts that they stopped the sales? They just couldn't get to the fast enough! A couple of days setup turned into weeks, into months, and some here even demanded refunds?? Remeber that??? Now he has to set ALL those accounts that were so hard to setup before that it took forever, AND they're pushing new sales to boot? Does this strike anyone else as just a little bit odd??

Oh, while I am no lawyer in any way shape or form, I have been in business for a number of years. I believe IF (note the previous word) the LS employee who said they had the servers wasn't lying (and apparently he wasn't about the server's being in their control, despite previous posts by some) about CW being in arrears for some big $$$. I believe that may fall under the legal heading of a mechanic's lien. For example, if you take your care into a shop and then don't pay, you won't get your car. The mechanic supplied a service, and you have to pay for it. IF (there's that word again) this is the case, LS would be in thier rights to hold the equipment until it is paid. In fact, my quess it's in the contract LS and CW signed as well. That's just a guess no one knows for sure as- not even Wolgang - as no one here is privy to ALL the facts in the matter.

Plus if he is going to spend all that money on servers, why would he go with a RAID 1 and not a RAID 5?

One of my friends uses prohosters

That's right, unlike most of our competition, who sell hosting accounts on a per domain basis, we provide our clients with the opportunity of hosting as many domains under the same account. While virtual hosting plans will limit you to 100 free unique IPs

Hi,
This is a new update with the latest comments by Shawn of Cyberwings.
Please make a comment as to whether or not you are 'holding' Cyberwings assets?

- July 15th, 2002 - Let me give you a bit of history, before I get too deep
into this announcement. When you read this newsletter and see the amount of time &
effort I have put into this announcement you will understand why this announcement was delayed
for a few days while I wrote this in its entirety. Around the first part of June 2002
Cyberwings network in Maine started to experience major latency & intermittent outage
issues. ....................................Balance of Shawn's statement is on the webpage www.cwstatus.com

Really, I didn't do anything. The users at WebHostingTalk did all the work.

All I did was take Wolfgang's advice and add 2 + 2.

1/2 of my sites were hosted on CW. the other was on 3-95, both i found from AT (thank you so much once again). I was thinking of switching over to CW, but now kind of blah, $4/mo per site isn't that bad......

Here's what happened in chat when Shawn was directly asked why Shawn told everyone that the move to the new DC was happening when in reality, he didn't have access to the PCs because Lightship locked him out..

''Look folks, we have a choice. We can wallow in this position we are in or we can bust out of this and move on - it's my choice to move on. Anyone who does not wish to stay, so be it, but we have put together a VERY fair compensation plan with 3-6 months of free hosting for everyone, large amounts of free bandwidth/space, and free upgrades, etc."

THAT should make EVERYONE feel a whole lot better!

Not much content to respond to here; let me recap some things.

philmacrevis, YOUR questions are good ones. I'll see if I can find answers. Shawn's supposed to be chatting again tonight, but that's always iffy, timeframe wise, and I'm not about to hang out for five hours to see if I can overlap. He already has the servers, though. But it wouldn't shock me if they're 150GB SCSI, or even 120GB EIDE RAID, or.... Shawn is more of a marketer than a techie, and he often enough gets techie details wrong, as many have rightly pointed out repeatedly. But we'll see--maybe these are just obscure drives.

And I wish I knew about Dual P4s, but I don't. I thought dual P4s (non-Xeon) were just fine, if not as good as dual Xeons, but I could be wrong about that.

Finally, I believe (but am not certain) that RAID 1 (or 0+1) offers higher performance than RAID 5, though RAID 5 is cooler, conceptually. (RAID 5 is cheaper and more elegant, but RAID 1 is faster.)

Brasscat, I agree that CW didn't live up to its statements once again--that's obviously true. But Shawn was quite explicit that he was trying to move EITHER the data or the servers, which was yet another clue that my days-ago scenario, routinely mocked by the likes of MontyBurns, was in fact true. (MontyBurns=humor, not truth, unfortunately, at least when it comes to Cyberwings.) So he didn't lie, but he was wrong. From a customer's perspective, I can see why one would say "doesn't make ANY difference--the move ISN'T DONE." True enough; but it does make a difference when judging a man's character.

BTW, in your most recent post you connected a made-up Q with a real A, giving a misleading reading of things. I don't think at all that you mean to deceive--your made-up question is a highly spun verswion of the actual question ("Why did you wait so long to announce it?"), but this happens way too often on this thread. People have been mixing their anger with the facts, and presenting it as facts. This can be 100% unintentional, but it's still not good at all.

Now as to the cheesy stuff Shawn was involved with before--well, I'm embarrassed on his behalf. That's cheesy stuff, I agree. Not illegal, not legally fraudulent, but definitely low-grade and overhyped, and certainly nothing I'd want (or have) on my resume. This just confirms that Shawn is comfortable with hype, and to any who have been following Cyberwings, Shawn, or what I've written, this is the oldest (and not the best) of news. (My sister used to be in sales, smart but not a college grad, and she sometimes has gone for stuff like that, sincerely. :^I )

A lot of people see what's happened with respect to Lightship as a shocking surprise, but it really isn't at all. Here's what I posted just over 5 days ago, e.g.:

Possibly a good analogy IMHO, relying on my guesswork, for the problems between LS and CW: think of LS as a cellular service, and CW a (rightly or wrongly) angry customer. CW thinks LS's service has stunk for weeks, and therefore wants out of its contract NOW; LS says it's CW's problem that so many calls have been dropped--after all, other customers are happy enough. And if CW cancels, it needs to pay the fee, as per the contract. So, CW, your phone is off now--you said repeatedly you wanted to cancel, right? So, you're welcome, see the enclosed bill, and have a great week!

followed two days later by a dot-to-dot restatement (incorporating the anonymous LS employee's claim that "those servers aren't going anywhere") for the blind:

So to sum up for those who want to get back to the CB and the TV, the best evidence available now indicates this timeline (this is plausible but still speculative AFTER the first point):

recent recurring debilitating CW pipeline problems (with disagreement over fault)
led to suspended payments,
led to suspended service (little and then no pipeline, no access to servers) & demands for payment,
led to CW moving as soon as it reacquired physical or logical access to the servers
which move should be complete by Monday, according to CW itself.

So far as I can tell, this has been the big picture all along--except for the last part, which CW got wrong: LS did not give it access to the servers over the weekend. (It'd be very interesting to know why Shawn was confident it would. Could be anything from reckless brashness [see notes on hype, above], to incorrect legal advice, to LS deception and disinformation [remember the e-mails and reports of phone calls they sent out to some sometimes hinting, sometimes stating that LS was not holding CW's assets? Now that seems like a candidate for duplicity, or at best Clintonism] so as to further embarrass and drain CW. IF that was their goal, they've found plenty of useful idiots here.)

And lest anyone make the tragic error of thinking (based on MontyBurns' comments) that I'm a Cyberwings shill, let me just say this: 90% of the intellectually deficient postings on this thread have been anti-CW; my corrective therefore has been pro-CW. (But never blindly so, as those several who actually read my posts and think, at the same time, plainly realize.)

Were it the other way around--if, say, 90% of the postings were maliciously and ignorantly smearing critics of CW--"Hey, look what I dug up about this MontyBurns guy from three years ago!" or similar garbage--then I'd be defending those very critics.

But it's not the other way around.

Let me also repeat, to counter MontyBurn's libelous inuendo that too well characterizes the quality and charity of his comments, that I have no actual or hint of current or planned financial stake in Cyberwings in any way, direct or indirect, aside from owning a few individual "i" plans--Cyberwings' cheapest annual plans. (Got them for myself and friends. None in use yet, only 3 setup.) I wish he'd apologize for his frequent irresponsible statements (and not juts about me), but I'm not holding my breath.

Customers have every right, IMHO, to be furious with Cyberwings. Cyberwings has in the last 3 weeks over-promised and under-delivered time after time--perfectly reversing what a business should do. (And even before then regarding setup times for some customers--their ordering process was too informal and chaotic. It didn't ramp up well at all.) This service failure is a fact regardless of whether it's Lightship's fault or not.

But reckless falsehood, smearing, and unlabelled and unconsidered speculation are still irresponsible, and are still the dominant features of this thread. Pity. If the tide turns, and two weeks from now the CW critics are being smeared, I may "change sides"--but the low quality of most (not all!) of the criticism won't make that easy.
