No actually it is a great thing. People tend to forget if they are fully remote and literally never go to the office for onsite training or meetings or whatever the potential candidate pool expanded greatly.

Right, because young qualified candidates that get paid will choose to live in Mississippi over LA, SF, or NY.

Maybe in 10 years this may be the case if things stay heavily remote, but right now the talent pool isn't there.

Did it, though? I had folks I was interviewing in Nebraska that ended up taking positions in other states and just moving. Either way, I'm not worried, since I'm awesome 😎

Maybe not Mississippi but I saw an article complaining about techbros living in Tahoe, another about New Yorkers buying in Cape Cod. Not exactly the kind of places you could live in a R2W situation.

I am a cancer patient in active treatment, immunotherapy. I still work in a hospital, I have no choice if I wish to continue having a place to live and medical care.

The number of people who come into the hospital without masks shocks me, the number of people who “ forgot” to bring their vaccination cards to visit a hospitalized relative or friend also shocks me. The worst? unvaccinated people who go off verbally because they can’t visit their relative who now has a hospital roommate…..I have been called some pretty horrible names all because the state and CDC put rules in place to try to protect sick patients in hospital beds.

I mask, I wear safety glasses & scrub cap, I douse myself with alcohol spray ….trying to keep every one safer. I have also had 2 vaccine shots and got my booster shot almost 2 weeks ago.

Let’s go up to the hospital sans masks, unvaccinated and visit grandma & when told no let’s shout and scream at a receptionist who is trying to tactfully explain the rules…I am sorry but some people’s lack of critical thinking skills astonishes me
I'm a pretty tolerant person. Well, I don't go off on people very often, I'll put it that way. But what pisses me off about people in recent times more than anything is the anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers. We have them locally, in this presumably enlightened place, Berkeley, CA. I'm sick or arguing with them on the local social media platform (NEXTDOOR). Screw 'em. Some people are simply incorrigible.

You need to remember that I am a caregiver, someone charged with soothing people during their worst moments. I am also the face of the hospital, I can’t insult or respond to insults with insults. At the end of the day I am there to be helpful and caring, not arguing with patients or their visitors.

If people get really bad I call an admin and/ or security, they know best how to handle what comes next, this is part of their job, not mine. Still, at days end, I walk away worried for these people & those they come in contact with. I have also had to retire to the restroom more than once to cry and try to compose myself.

I wasn't suggesting that you emulate me, I was only trying to echo your exasperation. I fully realize that you're not in a position to react as I can at my local Nextdoor platform. The level of discourse there is in many cases terrible. I can just turn my back on it. You obviously can't do that with your patients.

I'm inclined to speak up when I see people acting stupid BUT the issue right now is that for multiple reasons a lot of folks are (in many cases literally!) on a hair-trigger around here.

Its never a good idea to mess with people you don't know as there is ALWAYS somebody crazier/angrier/stupider (quite possibly armed!) then you skulking about and ready to take out their problems on your skull!

*(I use a similar rule when driving ... crazy bastage who drives like me could be coming the other way!)

😛

Was in Manhattan last night for a bit. On the subways it was a near 100% mask compliance rate, although I've heard from New Yorkers at times it's more like 80%.

Costco in NJ, been twice in a week, around 85-90% mask wearing, and that is voluntary.

I mean our numbers are good. Hopefully we can get to 80% vaccination and just lift everything.

Just found out my 71yo diabetic mother got her first jab today. She said she talked with her retired doc neighbor and he recommended get vaxxed. Most people her age are vaxxed in WV which is a rare bright spot in our state.

Got an email from my company, looks like they are forcing the vaccination like lot of companies are doing. I got my two shots so I'm not affected but I do wonder what that will mean for those who didn't get it. They'll either give in or have to get another job. Pretty crazy. I wonder if this is a way for companies to shed employees. Wonder how the unions will handle this actually.

they have trained dogs to sniff out covid at an airport in florida. one of the dogs is 99% double blind accurate. they can even train them to target a specific variant of covid.

i did a quick search, apparently elephants are top of the smell sensitivity pyramid. but if you want to sniff out certain diseases, you want the african giant-pouched rat. 100 tuberculosis tests in 20 min vs human lab technician in 4 days.

I've given up arguing for sure and even trying to persuade people to get vaxed at this point. The info is out there, they see it differently than i do.
Unfortunately at work i'm stuck back in anti-vax central for the time being.

On a slightly better note, my nephew is back home after spending 2 weeks in the hospital with Covid. His wife had it too but wasn't so bad she needed to be hospitalized. I was surprised to find out neither were vaxed when my sister told me.
They're both recovering but i hope they don't have any long term effects. I'm worried about my nephew on that though.

Basically what they're doing here in Ontario, specific types of businesses will be required to check vaccine IDs, which are coming. It's going to be a phone app. Not a fan of that at all. Probably safe to assume non compliant businesses will get huge fines too. For now I think it's non essential stuff like gyms, restaurants, air travel etc but I'm sure eventually it will be more widespread. Some doctors are even refusing to see non vaccinated patients.

I hate that all of us suffer with this, because it's basically another license we need to have now.
You really need to start assigning blame to the right people, the antivaxers. If everyone just did their civic duty, we wouldn't need this shit.

But because people are shitheads, we have to have laws with checks and enforcement, welcome to Human civilization.

lmao now they want to start testing our sewage, because there's not enough cases so they need to bring the numbers up I guess.

I might have to start flushing down some of my cat's turds down the toilet just to mess with the system. 😛
Yeah, how dare a government implement a forward indication system, better to wait for full hospitals.

I was thinking of doing the vaccine checks for plane, train, and bus travel. We're already doing ID checks for those anyway, adding a vaccine card check isn't going to cause much additional work.

Adding vaccine checkpoints for car travel is a non-starter, no state government would want to enforce that.
I'm sure that it's coming too if shit heads still refuse vaccination. The screws will continue to be tightened.

The antivaxxers are actually a pretty small minority, some are just very vocal so it makes it seem like they are a large group. I agree they should just shut up but it's ridiculous punishing the rest of us because of them. But that's how governments work, a few people do something undesirable so they punish everyone. It's why there's so many laws about every possible thing and that everything is regulated to death these days. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

There are so many laws because we are packed full of people that will do anything they can get away with. And in the US half our political parties agree with that.

But nationally we have like 30+% unvaccinated, that is a huge chunk of antivaxers, not a vocal fringe. The vocal fringe has a lot of followers.

Car travel would be fairly easy to screen once they have the ID app as they can track where you show your ID so if you are more than say, 100km away from the last place you showed it, it means you're traveling. If you're suppose to be quarantining it will just deny you entry everywhere. Guessing even locally, if you've been to a place with a confirmed case it will just deny you everywhere for 2 weeks. They'll have very tight control with this.

Assuming they they get this system fully implemented and running smoothly, it would seem unlikely like it would just fade away after the pandemic. More likely that creative people would find more ways to put it to good use. I'm drawing a blank, but surely there are some.

Yep I think it will turn into a universal ID system and sort of a social credit system. They are already working on adding driver's license and other forms of ID in it at least specific to Ontario but I can see it go Canada wide or even world wide, so that the app and associated back end system is valid anywhere you go even out of country.

I mean, from a convenience point of view I suppose it's not a bad idea and the government already has all that info in a database anyway... so rather than carry cards around you just have this ID app that queries their database directly. Though it will also have interesting implications where they could dynamically deny/allow access to certain things. For example when going to a bar instead of the person checking your ID to see if you are of age, they scan your phone app which queries government servers and returns a yes/no answer that is based on all parameters such as vaccine status, age, maybe you're on probation and should not be out at that time, etc. Not just bars but even grocery stores, restaurants, etc.

They could also add money into this system where if they do UBI it would be part of that app and you just scan it at stores and it takes from the UBI account. They could limit what you buy with it, ex: no alcohol or luxery things. Regular bank accounts could tie in too as you would show this ID when opening an account and it would all tie in.

The more I think about it, it would be convenient I suppose since you just need your phone on you and have access to everything you'd normally need to carry separately. But it is kind of scary privacy wise, since everywhere you go there is a ping on the servers, kind of like a credit check.
