You think SF is hit hard. With near empty flights, I hear there are millions of bed bugs in Detroit that are struggling to find a ride out of there.
I heard Detroit has been bad for years. Like in the reference it got in the film Scary Movie 4. A small bit of movie trivia that fans of the movie know. edit: trivia hint: "Here's Detroit. Here's Detroit after the attacks."

Is it you that works a crazy amount of hours without getting paid OT or am I getting mixed with someone else? If it's you, you need to rethink your job situation. That is going to catch up with you very hard if it has not already. It's bad enough working crazy hours all the time and not having time to yourself but even worse if there is no compensation.

Yep, he's the one you're remembering. I agree wholeheartedly about his work situation.

Because of covid-19 fears..I've washed my hands so many times per day for the past couple weeks, the space between the base of fingers is starting to get quite dry and itchy. Think I'll wear some disposable latex or nitrile gloves for a day or two to hopefully let the skin regain some oils.
Umm, they don't sell lotion where you live? Washing hands doesn't damage them, it only removes the needed oils that prevent the effects you're complaining about. Well, it removes germs too, but removing germs/viruses doesn't cause dry, itchy skin.;)

Oils are actually a vital part of skin... and are naturally occurring... - and constantly removing natural oils that occur over and over tons of times ultimately does serve to dry things out.

This just gave me an idea. The Coronavirus drinking game. Take a sip every time there is a new case, drink a whole one every time someone dies from it.
Actually, it's recommended to give up drinking while this is going on. I mean, if you want to ameliorate your infection.

i've been reading and it sounds like this virus can destroy people's lungs. the CT scans are terrifying.

and i've had some nasty chest pain and breathing problems for the past year

so if i get this, i think i'm as good as dead
You might do well to quarantine yourself if you can. Hey, get some zinc lozenges. Use them per the instructions if you have any indication that you might be coming down with something. They are said to really help in stopping this virus's action, which is 100% to attack lung tissue. I'll paste in Dr. Robb's post, which explains it:
- - - -
Info from James Robb, MD FCAP, a renowned pathologist:

Dear Family and Friends, as some of you may recall, when I was a professor of pathology at the University of California San Diego, I was one of the first molecular virologists in the world to work on coronaviruses (the 1970s). I was the first to demonstrate the number of genes the virus contained. Since then, I have kept up with the coronavirus field and its multiple clinical transfers into the human population (e.g., SARS, MERS), from different animal sources.

The current projections for its expansion in the US are only probable, due to continued insufficient worldwide data, but it is most likely to be widespread by mid to late March and April.

Here is what I have done and the precautions that I take and will take. These are the same precautions I currently use during our influenza seasons, except for the mask and gloves.:

1) NO HANDSHAKING! Use a fist bump, slight bow, elbow bump, etc.

2) Use ONLY your knuckle to touch light switches. elevator buttons, etc.. Lift the gasoline dispenser with a paper towel or use a disposable glove.

3) Open doors with your closed fist or hip - do not grasp the handle with your hand, unless there is no other way to open the door. Especially important on bathroom and post office/commercial doors.

4) Use disinfectant wipes at the stores when they are available, including wiping the handle and child seat in grocery carts.

5) Wash your hands with soap for 10-20 seconds and/or use a greater than 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer whenever you return home from ANY activity that involves locations where other people have been.

6) Keep a bottle of sanitizer available at each of your home's entrances. AND in your car for use after getting gas or touching other contaminated objects when you can't immediately wash your hands.

7) If possible, cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue and discard. Use your elbow only if you have to. The clothing on your elbow will contain infectious virus that can be passed on for up to a week or more!

What I have stocked in preparation for the pandemic spread to the US:

1) Latex or nitrile latex disposable gloves for use when going shopping, using the gasoline pump, and all other outside activity when you come in contact with contaminated areas.

Note: This virus is spread in large droplets by coughing and sneezing. This means that the air will not infect you! BUT all the surfaces where these droplets land are infectious for about a week on average - everything that is associated with infected people will be contaminated and potentially infectious. The virus is on surfaces and you will not be infected unless your unprotected face is directly coughed or sneezed upon. This virus only has cell receptors for lung cells (it only infects your lungs). The only way for the virus to infect you is through your nose or mouth via your hands or an infected cough or sneeze onto or into your nose or mouth.

2) Stock up now with disposable surgical masks and use them to prevent you from touching your nose and/or mouth (We touch our nose/mouth 90X/day without knowing it!). This is the only way this virus can infect you - it is lung-specific. The mask will not prevent the virus in a direct sneeze from getting into your nose or mouth - it is only to keep you from touching your nose or mouth.

3) Stock up now with hand sanitizers and latex/nitrile gloves (get the appropriate sizes for your family). The hand sanitizers must be alcohol-based and greater than 60% alcohol to be effective.

4) Stock up now with zinc lozenges. These lozenges have been proven to be effective in blocking coronavirus (and most other viruses) from multiplying in your throat and nasopharynx. Use as directed several times each day when you begin to feel ANY "cold-like" symptoms beginning. It is best to lie down and let the lozenge dissolve in the back of your throat and nasopharynx. Cold-Eeze lozenges is one brand available, but there are other brands available.

I, as many others do, hope that this pandemic will be reasonably contained, BUT I personally do not think it will be. Humans have never seen this snake-associated virus before and have no internal defense against it. Tremendous worldwide efforts are being made to understand the molecular and clinical virology of this virus. Unbelievable molecular knowledge about the genomics, structure, and virulence of this virus has already been achieved. BUT, there will be NO drugs or vaccines available this year to protect us or limit the infection within us. Only symptomatic support is available.

I hope these personal thoughts will be helpful during this potentially catastrophic pandemic. Good luck to all of us,

James Robb, MD FCAP

True but he's right. Inferior/dangerous products, loss of our ability to support ourselves because we outsource everything. Read something that said that said that we get 90% of our drug components from overseas. Steel anyone?

Really? This isn't a left/right policy discussion. Both sides of our effed up govt have their heads in the trough.

what a moran. context is everything. hoarding supplies is in response to a viral outbreak. our dependancy on foreign manufacturing is built upon decades of and will never be changed by any single administration ever. youre right, this isnt a left/right policy discussion, its not a policy discussion at all. please respect the thread title thanks. dont want to? well then ill be a dick because you deserve it.

Looks like zinc lozenges are becoming harder to find.

edit: if you want to use zinc lozenges, allegedly you need at least 13mg of Zinc per dose. Only a few brands have that. You might be able to take multiple doses of other lozenges to achieve the same effect. Cold-eeze is one brand that has 13mg or more per dose, and I think Nature's Way has a product that offers the same thing.

But if you spend the duration collapsed in a heap, too drunk to go outside or interact with anyone, you are unlikely to pick up the virus. Plus people tend to steer clear of drunks, so you'll effortlessly maintain a distance from the infected.

Please refrain from name-calling and tell us how is discussion about the effect of this viral outbreak on supply chains not respecting the thread title?!

Yes, our dependency is based upon "decades of" and won't be changed by a single administration. That was entirely his point. We need to take steps over many administrations. It should be possible because this is not a left/right issue. How that gets you so worked up is beyond my comprehension.

I get the TP, and even the paper towels, but bottled water? I guess you like the BPH and microplastics found in water in plastic bottles? I was in Sam's Club the other day and TP was gone. paper towels stock was low, but they had a mountain of bottled water.
Bottled water doesn't have "micro plastics"

You're talking about what happens when it hypothetically becomes litter and gets degraded into tiny bits.

[edit]

Also I googled and read a few things about BPH. There was no mention of it being related to plastics - even when I skimmed the first few results for "plastics BPH"

No. You store water in plastic and the water will dissolve tiny amount of plastic, albeit slowly.

Does it? Is the minuscule amount of "dissolved" plastic shown to be harmful? Is it shown to be related to BPH?

I suppose it dissolves a tiny bit of glass or ceramic from your bottles and cups? Or maybe whatever your pipes are made from?

You realise water is a universal solvent? Why would anyone care about lead pipes if water does nothing to lead?

Glass is made from molten sand. It's what chemists use to hold chemicals in liquid form over heat.... it's pretty safe for storage and heating food. Plastics, however have a much lower melting point and due to the makeup of them coming from petroleum and other stuff....well, the general consensus is that it can be considered a carcinogen if consumed.

For single-use packaging, it's cheap and only questioned by hippies, until recently. In 1993, a girl in my junior high science fair did a project on plastic and distilled water. It was a legit project and made me aware that it wasn't safe to heat things in plastic. I basically don't use a microwave unless heating soup up in a glass bowl.
