But I alternate between feeling embarrased about my own nervousness when I hear the over-the-top ranters (who sort of shame me by reflecting my own fears back at me in extreme form), and feeling less-than-fully-reassured by the authorities declaring that it's all under control and/or no worse than flu.

It's totally reasonable to feel nervous, I don't think there's anything to be embarrassed about with regard to that. I have a young child at home and I'm nervous about her getting seasonal sick (flu, RSV, etc) not to mention Covid-19. I just don't let it get the best of me or force me into irrational actions.

The biggest doubt I have about it, is the question of what proportion of people who are infected by this, end up being hospitalised, and in turn what proportion need intensive care? If it spreads widely, even if the fatality rate is less than the presumably extremely-unreliable estimate of 2%, just how much strain is it going to put on the medical system?

With appropriate preparation, I suspect the advanced (using this term broadly) Healthcare systems of countries like the UK, the US, etc will do fine and I have no reason to expect inappropriate preparation.

Also, Iran's reported figures seem seriously implausible. They officially only have a little over 100 cases, but admit to nearly 20 deaths and Infected Iranians keep popping up across the middle-east in other countries' figures. To me, it seems that if it's spread to your deputy health minister, you've probably got more than 139 cases in the country.

This is the biggest problem we have right now in evaluating the epidemiology.. Our data is garbage. We probably won't have an accurate mortality rate until this is all over, just the way it works.

Yeah, fair enough, that's probably right. Now I come to think about it, I do wonder how much both for myself and for others I know personally (and the shouty people on phone-ins), anxiety about things like this could be a displacement of anxiety about other things.

It seems like this could all be much more manageable, but the countries of the world are instead muddling numbers and downplaying the infectiousness to make themselves seem more in control than they really are. "No need to to close borders or practice containment, we got this."

Definitely a problem. Not just because it makes it hard to get accurate data, but because it breeds conspiracy theories.

Europe's relaxed border policies are going to create a big problem very quickly, and, in turn, will quickly ramp up infections in other areas of the world that were previously more contained via travelers from Europe.

A ton of people are going to get this regardless, but if everyone gets it at once, no healthcare system is prepared for that.

The main reason why large countries are muddling the numbers and downplaying this epidemic is because of money, mainly economy and stock market. The longer they can prolong this false sense of everything is under control, this is a minor issue that will blow over when the weather warms, the longer they can keep the stock market from plunging. That's one reason why China has kept this thing hidden for so long, there are internal documents from China that shows that they may have known this since December of 2019 (they discovered and started warning about an unknown pneumonia). USA will not start screening and testing sick people until guidelines tell them to and so far, that hasn't changed. The country that has reacted to this in the best way? Singapore.

China knew in 2019, yet they threaten the doctor that tried to warn us about it. He's dead now.

Fuck China and it's prioritizing of its image at the expense of all else. Even its own people.

dotdotdot... what does this have to do with Coronavirus?

Yeah, there are shitty people everywhere. News @ 11. This is like an hourly occurrence lol.
For some reason I'm not getting audio with that clip. I did see it on the news a day or two ago. Yeah, the answer is the Asian component. IIRC, they said the perpetrators out loud declared their hatred of Chinese. It does sadden me. TBH, Chinatown Oakland is my FAVORITE urban spot in the entire Bay Area. I hear they're hurting. Have a thought to go down there, but it's a 6-7 mile bike ride, so probably won't soon.

...and yet this still doesn't actually link it to discussion of SARS-Cov-2 or resulting racism unless every racist incident involving an Asian is somehow related to Coronavirus. Ugh.

Way to undermine the message, guys.

I didn't say it was related to coronavirus. I saw the clip. They attacked a meek Asian, maybe Chinese and yelled out loud they hated Chinese. That's what it was, they showed it on TV news, I saw that a couple nights ago. I reacted to the comment by the person posting the video here, suggesting there's a correlation of some kind. What's the message? People are racist, people are angry, people can't control themselves, people lash out. It sucks, I've never been like that and I stay away from that kind of shit, but they had it on TV. We can't ignore it, we can deplore it. I rest.

Edit: Like I said, I love Chinatown! My favorite place around here.

Raise your hand if you died yet!

I did that in 2010 from a heart attack.

There needs to be a full stop on world travel until this is cured, it's the easiest way to stop the spread. People need to just stay where they are. Have special flights to get people back in their own country (and quarantine them for a while when they get there) if they are away but then everyone needs to just stay put.

Yeah it would mess up the economy for a bit but health is more important than the economy.

The tricky part is figuring out a way to at least keep basic supplies flowing, but this would be a good case to stop putting all our eggs in one basket and actually start manufacturing stuff more locally and setting up appropriate local supply chains to make it possible.

Our societal system is too reliant on globalization, and then when stuff like this happens everything comes crumbling down. It does not need to be that way.

As a side note this is probably a good time to buy stocks. :p

I talked about this in P&N in relation to a war breaking out and the US not having the manufacturing base needed to sustain our economy, I was basically laughed at and told that something like that couldn't happen.

Now here we are 2 months into this outbreak and places in the US are closing because they don't have the parts needed to assemble what they make because most things are made in China.

We all feel bad for that Asian man and ashamed of the American who taunted and threatened him. Doesn't mean it has anything to do with this thread.

I think that makes a confirmed case on every continent now

Still waiting on Antarctica. 1918 Spanish Flu never even got there. ;)
