This is what caught my eye. If true, God help us!!!!

If COVID-19 does become a pandemic, outbreak models have suggested that anywhere from 40% to 70% of the world’s population might catch the illness, which appears extremely dangerous to the elderly or people with underlying health conditions.

CDC says to prepare for coronavirus spread in the US

“It’s not so much of a question of if this will happen in this country anymore but a question of when this will happen,” said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC.

I would be shocked if it didn't get "worse" here. That said, she also went on to say this:

What we still don’t know is what that will look like. We can have community spread in the United States and have it be relatively mild and we can have community spread in the U.S. and have it be very severe, so that is what we don’t completely know yet, and we of course don’t completely know when it’s going to happen,” she said.

We just don't know. Being prepared is certainly important, being sensational is counter productive.

At the very least, I would recommend getting Tylenol and Ibuprofen for treating both fever and inflammation....then just drink lots of liquids and hope your system fights it.

good things to add.

dog food
chicken food ( they provide enough eggs for us to live on in a pinch, and should lay for another couple years)
dog meds
meds for us
couple gallons of bleach?

we have about 15 squash in the cellar still, a good amount of home caned stuff.

maybe pickup a big bag of white rice, it lasts for years. brown does only lasts in the 6 month range.

nothing crazy prepping, but its not a bad idea before any panic sets in or factory are shut down.

what do you rely on from a relatively small group of outside sources?
food comes from a lot of places, things like pet and livestock food, or meds come from a relatively small number of sources.

Thanks. Ichinisan came back a week ago and seems fine but I guess we won't know if he is Georgia's "Patient Zero" for another couple weeks. ;) I do have the sniffles but I think it's just from all the dusting and vacuuming I've been doing in my office.

If my brother or I start to feel anything then maybe we can just drive there: CDC is local (Atlanta). A Georgia Tech student I used to work with has been there since 2012 so I need to get his number handy. :D

You should both probably hang out in a UV closet for about 30 minutes just to be sure.

Post #1182, as I said last night.

They do matter. Period. Full stop.

Comparing it to the ridiculous TSA screening process furthers my point.
You are hilarious. Italy has already exported cases to Spain, Germany, France, Algeria, Switzerland, Austria, and Croatia, and that only includes the cases that we know of, but you don't think it's worth testing or self-quarantining a bunch of sick kids that just came back from Italy.

No worry, health care system will crash way before the 40% mark along with the world as we know it.

I don't think it's worth testing outside of the current CDC guidelines. I never said I opposed self quarantine, people are free to quarantine themselves for any reason they choose. Why do you feel the need to create strawmen?

I also take this to mean you didn't yet read the link I referenced? If you refuse to educate yourself, that's entirely fine, just don't continue to day things that are flat out wrong. Have some intellectual consistency.

Is Naproxen a reasonable alternative ti ibuprofen in this? I have that, ibuprofen too (probably out of date), but I have had heartburn issues with ibuprofen, so got Naproxen instead.

Pretty sure most north americans have stashes of those. Expired just mean less effective.

In fact, get infected early, then there is more medical resource available to save your butt.
Who wants to save your infected butt? Treating covid-19 infected people is a very onerous task. Seriously, if I thought I had it, I'd consider self-treatment, which is what I have always done for colds, flu, really every infection I've ever had, IIRC. What are they going to do for me that I can't do for myself... short of needing ICU type treatment?

Man, you or going to make me break my sensationalism run in this thread.

Naproxen is pretty much the same as ibuprofen. They can both wreck your stomach if you take them on an empty stomach and/or on a chronic basis.

Ibuprofen/naproxen for mild pain, fever, and inflammation

Acetaminophen for mild pain and fever only. No anti inflammatory effects

If you get a nasty strand of pneumonia, I doubt you'll make it on your own.

Thanks. I'm going to stock up on acetaminophen, probably when I hit Costco March 2.

Yes, acetaminophen is the same as Tylenol. Acetaminophen is the generic name for the brand name medication Tylenol, made by McNeil Consumer. Acetaminophen is a pain reliever for mild to moderate pain, such as headaches, muscles aches, backache, and toothaches, and fevers.Nov 5, 2018

Thanks... I'll keep that in mind. Talked to a guy I know in the gym last week. He said his 95 YO dad is in the hospital with pneumonia. He's trying to keep his dad alive, tricky situation. There's viral, bacterial and fungal pheumonia. I've never had it. It's fluid in the lungs, he said.

Inflammation causes fluid accumulation.

I've always thought tylenol was a useless pain med that never worked for me. I've always used Advil for my occasional headaches.

I remember reading at one point that tylenol is a drug that to this day we still don't know how or why it works....

There needs to be a full stop on world travel until this is cured, it's the easiest way to stop the spread. People need to just stay where they are. Have special flights to get people back in their own country (and quarantine them for a while when they get there) if they are away but then everyone needs to just stay put.

Yeah it would mess up the economy for a bit but health is more important than the economy.

The tricky part is figuring out a way to at least keep basic supplies flowing, but this would be a good case to stop putting all our eggs in one basket and actually start manufacturing stuff more locally and setting up appropriate local supply chains to make it possible.

Our societal system is too reliant on globalization, and then when stuff like this happens everything comes crumbling down. It does not need to be that way.

As a side note this is probably a good time to buy stocks. :p

I thought that was aspirin?

Tylenol never did anything for pain for me either, ibuprofen or naproxen do.

Probably best to be one of the first people infected in an outbreak before health care systems start failing. Time for a round trip flight and visit to a Korean cult. I'll bring back a souvenir I can share with everyone!
