I did that in 2010 from a heart attack.

I talked about this in P&N in relation to a war breaking out and the US not having the manufacturing base needed to sustain our economy, I was basically laughed at and told that something like that couldn't happen.

Now here we are 2 months into this outbreak and places in the US are closing because they don't have the parts needed to assemble what they make because most things are made in China.
It's almost like people cannot understand something they haven't already experienced.

Coronavirus has entered the chat.

Couple more hundred cases discovered in South Korea. This time in Seoul. And guess where all these new cases are from. Two giant megachurches in Seoul. Like 200+ new cases are all from two megachurches. I don't know why but South Korea has some crazy large megachurches and Christian cults. And these people are crazy. Churches want their donation money so they will never temporarily close. In fact, they'll just take advantage of current situation and call for more mass gatherings and prayer services so they can collect even more donation money from their members. It's really sick.

These churches should temporarily stop services but they'll never do that voluntarily. South Korean government should step in and temporarily block church services but they won't. Too many high up officials are involved in churches and cults.

176 lbs this morning, doing my part to pull down the average!

Per Google, the average American male (age 20-39) weighs 196.9 lbs. I would need to lose 39 lbs to have a normal BMI! Bonkers! Maybe I need some good ol' Coronavirus to drop some lbs.

Haven't gone through all 54 pages of the thread, but are some of you guys getting masks and other PPE yet? Is it that time? I'm in CA, about 2 hours south of Travis and I'm starting to consider at least getting some masks for the family.

I have some N95 dust masks that I use for woodworking, and a respirator, but no. Maybe I'm stupid, but I'm not worried.

Masks aren't indicated unless you're actually ill. Not that you're going to find any at this point in stores...

Wait the CDC dashboard shows a grand total of only 445 COVID-19 tests since the 21st? In the entire country?

This is exactly what I was thinking, have been thinking for two months, ever since the videos of containment efforts were appearing on evening news TV. The raw sense of panic in China has been palpable for quite a while. It's pretty clear to me that the US economy if Chinese factories are slowed significantly is going to suffer mightily, and that's not even considering the effects of the disease spreading here.

The US can only test ~100 per day, because something was defective with the original tests.

Per some of the rumors in the internet, it is likely that cases are going to be confirmed in the general population within the next 24-48 hours.

The CDC just announced that they have confirmed "another case," and it seems it may not be from the cruise ship.

I got mine because of the wildfires around here the last few years. Didn't dream I'd be using N95 masks for protection from infection, but I'm prepared. Bought them online at decent prices. You can search, maybe find deals online yet, but don't wait!

These are things that I have been thinking about since our manufacturing moved to China, not something a teenaged kid should be worrying about.

I've two 3M contractor 10 pack boxes and couple singles. I got mine at Home Depot and Amazon before all this blew up. I knew I wouldn't be able to buy it if I needed it later on. I figured $40 is small insurance for something that might come in handy. Plus, it's not like the masks will go bad if I don't use it all right away.

It might be too late for you. I haven't checked but I doubt you're going to be able to find masks in most stores now. I wouldn't bother paying scalpers ripoff prices now.

Yeah I just saw the new case that they don't know where it came from.

Seems at a minimum possible there are clusters in the US that nobody knows about.

I'm taking 2 day plane trip to San Diego this weekend. I'll bring an N95, probably not wear it. I figure WTH if I get it this weekend. Better then than when US facilities are pitifully overburdened. I stand a better chance of surviving now than later. I'll be surprised if we don't have an epidemic in US by April. Egg on Trumps face, BTW.

There are likely clusters in many countries including the US that nobody knows about or don't want to admit. I suspect there are lot more cases in countries like Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, etc. that's not reported because they don't test or don't have the ability to test/treat. I suspect there are lot more cases in Japan too but they're unwilling to test there right now as well.

I'm willing to bet money that Japan is just as bad as South Korea right now but they're not testing in Japan because of the Summer Olympics. Guaranteed.

aside from masks, clorox, wipes, lysol etc. What would be a reasonable amount of canned & dry food to have on hand? 30-45days worth?

I'ts definitely much worse than what they are reporting. New cases have been popping up all over Japan with no apparent connection. Japan has openly said they no longer believe containment is possible so they are shifting their strategy to management.

That scares me because I'm heading to HNL in 2 weeks with my kids. I may end up making them wear gloves in public and instruct them not to touch their faces unless they have me take their gloves off.

It sounds like even if we get Coronavirus, we won't know if we're infected unless we actually die from it and they find out in the autopsy....

I'm hopeful that the 70K cases reported in China are actually closer to 500,000+ and that it's been going on for much longer than what we heard. That would essentially drop the mortality rate, though it seems to be super easy to catch.
You should ALWAYS have 60 days regardless of any 'current events'.
My wife just cleaned out our pantry and dumped cans that are only a few months old...

I bought 5lbs of rice and 3lbs of beans, but it sounds like I need to go pick up a few more bags next time I'm out.
