Reported confirmed cases outside of China exploded in the last 24 hours, with South Korea, Italy, and Iran showing exponential surges. Japan appears to be steadily climbing, but Singapore and Hong Kong have leveled off the past day or two. Overall, global new cases went from 628 yesterday to 891 today (about %30), a difference of 263. South Korea accounted for 190 of the new cases.

Five new deaths were reported outside of China, increasing the total by 36% to 15.

Simone Gao skirts with more believable conspiracy theories while discussing the cover-up.

Still not buying it all but there are some concerning revelations here.

Sounds like they prefer the Coronavirus Study Group and International Committee on the Taxanomy of Viruses name, "SARS-CoV-2" instead of the WHO/China's name "COVID-19." That's a good thing in my book.

I noted one thing in particular on the news tonight being a cult (S. Korea?) that has major mingling of members and has an internal outbreak and that they are going rogue and underground. That's very concerning. If they avoid containment, seems to me, unless authorities can herd them like cattle, they could constitute an outbreak parameter, a kind of Pandora's box of contamination.

This virus appears to be quite a bit more contagious than the flu, based on what I'm seeing/hearing. The scenes I've seen of video taken in China are alarming to say the least. I'm thinking a global pandemic may be difficult to avoid.

Hopefully, it will remain only moderately lethal. Also, hopefully, it won't mutate, at least not to the extent of influenza, which has proven to be unstoppable and can only be mitigated by annual redeveloped vaccines.

Yes, you are right, this is not some humanity-ending scourge.

It looks like Iran and Italy are now experiencing legitimate outbreaks.

Taiwan is saying that someone in Wuhan just got reinfected after recovery.
Yipes! I'm just wondering now, could I avoid human contact for an extended period of time if I wanted to. A year? Two years? :D Not leave the house/property? Grow my own vegetables from seeds I get mail order? Possible? Maybe. Maybe order food delivered. Dude, I'm NOT talking about pizza! I'm talking about 25lb or 50lb bag of flour, 25lb bag of beans, 4lb boxes of nonfat dry milk powder, stuff like that. I have enough food on hand I think I could live months right now. If prepared, maybe a year... maybe more. Might get pretty depressing, though.

Some random thoughts

Sounds as if Beijing has stronger travel restrictions with regard to the rest of China than the rest of the world does. That seems a bit odd. It's easier for someone to travel from provincial China to a foreign city than to Beijing.

The IOC are still insisting the Tokyo Olympics are going ahead. Nothing can be allowed to get in the way of the sports industries' quest for money and glory, I guess (this further reinforces my distaste for organised sport!)

They don't seem to know for sure how long the incubation period is - reports of cases where it is longer than the two-weeks that seems to be the standard quarantine duration.

The WHO still advise against any air-travel restrictions, even as they approve of the internal restrictions in China. Seems inconsistent to me.

Tokyo Olympics... aha. Well, it's early at this point. We'll see what happens. This is another catastrophe for Japan in the making. Call it off or hold it? Will the people come? If the fans don't come, they lose anyway.

UK parliamentary (?) candidate offers to hold in UK, Japan refuses as unacceptable.

Obviously, the WHO and CDC (and any other science oriented entities that will invest time/money/expertise in investigating COVID19) are our hope in negotiating this burgeoning crisis.

Let's get the incompetent (i.e. Republican) administration out of office in Washington, that has to be part of smart thinking now in America.

I have double digits N95 around the house right now. I wasn't thinking contagion when I ordered them, we had smoke from wildfires that was unprecedented. I bought my first online pack when I had to finish my garage renovation before the rains came.

I don't expect to not catch this virus. News that you can get reinfected is disheartening.

Quote from a member of the South Korean religious sect at the centre of one of their clusters

"The church leaders have told us that this is a test by the devil as he is jealous of the expansion of our church and I believe that is the case. "

Religion never fails to bring the crazy.

(If the epidemic spreads, there's presumably going to be a lot more of this kind of 'thinking'...not that anyone in the US would ever think in such terms, obviously)

Anyone know why people are saying that this virus will disappear when the weather becomes warmer? If it's just a heat issue, then wouldn't they just keep heaters on full blast in quarantine zones to change that isolation environment into a summer temperature? I don't see how once we hit May or June, this should all go away.

Because it is a respiratory illness that spreads the same way as influenza. "Flu season" is caused by a few cold-related things:
•Warmth-seeking individuals clustered in closer proximity (home/indoors)
•Dry air causing thin mucous membranes that do little to prevent an airborne agents from penetrating deep into your respiratory system next to their target cells
•Runny noses due to cold exposure

Maybe colder temperatures also keeps infectious droplets from evaporating/drying out as fast to preserve the infectious parts longer but I think the dry air counteracts that. Hard to say.

Been subscribed to these guys for well over a year:

Been watching them just for the pro-Taiwan news regarding China (IOW, what China won't tell you). They try to be funny but they aren't. Regardless, they have a lot to say about WHO corruption in this one.

Wish they'd drop the fake comedy show schtick.

Request for everyone, please stick to reputable news sources. YouTube’ers are just that random people putting videos up.

Again, this is terrible advice. Real, professional, journalism and media exists on YouTube. Some of the most credible sources on the matter are YouTubers with first-hand experience in China including how to circumvent China's censorship.

SerpentZA/LaoWhy86/ADVChina called the mask shortage and got the cause right many days before they actually ran out, only to have CNN misfire days later with an article directly misattributing the shortage to panicked Americans.

Bury your head in the sand if you want to or just accept the information with context of where it comes from. Doesn't matter if it's from the Falun Gong's Epoch Times or from the WHO. They have agendas. You might not even know the WHO's agenda if you stuck to CNN, NBC, etc. I certainly wouldn't have secured N95 masks for my mother and myself if it weren't for REAL news from YouTubers.

Kinda I think butl MERS is Middle Eastern and typically much warmer than much of the US in April. People will still be clustered at work as well. Humidity is something in our favor in much of the US unless one lives in an arid clime, however influenza and this virus are not the same and no one really knows how virulent it is and the transmission rate in various situations. "Gone by April" is not your statement I know, but those who make those claims as factual are scientifically ill informed.

For a sec I thought I am back to pre 1900 then I realize I am typing on ATOT, people still buy that crazy idea? It is one thing to have faith in high power but test by devil is a whole diff lvl of .....(lack of word).

Definitely, but I haven't actually seen anyone say that it would be gone by April. People are just speculating/hopeful that it could be or that it will be enough to end the quarantines. I also feel it's a bit too optimistic but that isn't a scientifically informed opinion either.

Obviously, the flu survives and limps through the summer into the next flu season every year so no one expects this to eliminate SARS-CoV-2 on its own. It may slow it down enough for us to eliminate it. It may only slow it down enough for the Olympics to happen without major issue. It may not slow it down at all but there is reason to believe it probably will. It certainly helped contain SARS.

The President made the April claim.

That said, there's no reason to believe it won't be self limiting to some degree.
