But 'people Greenman knows' is not a scientifically-selected sampling of the population!

It probably depends a lot on how they are defining 'underlying health problems'. They don't really seem to explain that (athlete's foot? migraines? a bad knee?)

I wonder whether 'being overweight' is considered as an "underlying health problem"? I saw one report making a big deal out of the fact that 65% of those who died were overweight - when I suspect that's pretty much in line with the percentage of the general population, so doesn't mean much.

Diabetes is pretty common, that's 1 in 10 of the US population, and if you include pre-diabetes it's nearly 1 in 3.
Do you think the "vast majority of people" Greenman knows are providing him with an honest assessment of their personal health? Another thing on it's surface so dumb it's not even worth addressing.

Multiple news outlets reporting the CDC will reverse its advice on masks/coverings for the general population. I know they wanted to help avoid a run on masks, which happened anyway, but man they could have done this a while ago.

Would not have been difficult to produce many millions of washable masks in the last couple months domestically and abroad at idled apparel factories.

^^^^^ RedTube and Pornhub subscription in the same month? Isn't that "double jeopardy" for your health/sanity, and pocketbook?

Thanks @CZroe for clearing that up. I guess I shouldn't have understood the words "bats... for consumption" to mean that in this thread. I shouldn't have inferred that we're talking about SARS-CoV-2 in a coronavirus thread either. My bad. :p

Didn't mean to jump on your case or mischaracterize what you wrote. My point is that throwing a bunch of possible theories out there without solid proof sows confusion. Perhaps even my own at times.

I may or may not have this Covid 19 thing yet. I've had a cough since Feb 28 and borderline upper/lower respiratory stuff that makes me want to cough when I breathe in. What makes it borderline is day to day....somedays it starts to go to my lower respiratory system, but I seem to fight it back. I started antibiotics a few days ago and a vitamin C regime last week...but it's STILL hanging on. I likely won't get tested unless I have trouble breathing and it just hasn't happened yet. Nothing but coughing. I went to Hawaii (Oahu/Big Island) March 12-20 and it got a little worse, but never real bad. Am I asymptomatic or is this just a typical seasonal virus or two back-to-back?? Who knows. The 767 from Honolulu to DC was packed, but the 737 to Atlanta only had 20 people on it. My exposure was likely only 30 or so people. Best part was that my office was shut down when I got back, so I've not really worked a full day since March 6 since I wasn't wanting to start new projects before being out a week and a half. =P If I live...it was totally worth it.

So I get back in town and the kids' school has been cancelled and they're doing homework packets. My local cable internet company is offering 60 days of free service, so last week...I signed up for high speed cable internet for the first time in 5 years. Today, I got some new Linksys Velop wifi access points because my house is much bigger than it was 5 years ago (I added 1900 square feet). If nothing else, all my smart TVs are working and I have stuff to watch before I die.

On that note...I hope everyone stays safe. Tell you parents/elders to shelter in place as much as they can and avoid contact with as many people as possible. I totally changed grocery stores to the scary one that no one goes to....on purpose. Less is more right now. Avoid the busy stores and busy days/times. Stay safe....this stuff is serious.

@Amused will not be happy since he doubled-down on that aspect even after reversing himself on the "flu is worse" angle.

Again, the run on masks happened before the CDC weighed in at all. The cause was even discussed in this very thread before that CNN article and CDC statement were written. Ironically, we'd still have more in this country if the CDC had said nothing or even encouraged Americans to buy them. At least they'd still be in the country when they publicly appeal for Americans to donate them to hospitals and clinics. Now they are appealing to us to donate masks we don't have. I deliberately only bought 2 back in January and left the others because I felt China needed them more.

After the Daigo (parallel traders) cleaned out Amazon and other online medical suppliers, Chinese around the world were tasked with buying them up and shipping them all to China... like this proud Florida woman buying them on behalf of China:
“It feels so awesome to buy all the masks! I didn’t leave a single mask for the Americans!”

Classy.

Again, I was all for helping China when I figured they needed them more than we did, but this is just insulting. I mean, I already knew this was happening and was somewhat OK with it as long as we were honest about what was happening. I'm sure she's just joking... but it's a bad joke.

Greenland Group and Risland hit Australia pretty hard too:

"China-Australia work as one together to fight epidemic"

The accompanying post:
"90 tons of selective medical supplies… ready for the air transport direct from Sydney to Wuhan via corporate jet on Monday next week"

I don't see how people who were told this in January could still deny it in mid March. We had MOUNDS of verifiable proof for months.

Getting REALLY fucking sick of seeing every god damn website with stupid messages like this shit:

1585869811100.png

Oh really Mint? You've got me covered during COVID-19 Pandemic? OH THANK GOODNESS FOR YOU! Thank you so much for your help! What exactly are you doing again? Making medical supplies, donating money, etc?

Oh... nothing... Okay. Thanks for having me covered....

And I'm just using this as one example, but just about every retail store, restaurant chain, online store, services, etc... feels the need to send me stupid shit of 6 paragraphs of shit that no one with half a brain would read.

Imagine Americans would do the same thing in china and boast about it publicly .... ""It feels so awesome to buy all the masks! I didn't leave a single mask for the chinese!"

And we still have Americans that are blinded with that kind of behavior. Heck, we even have posters in this very thread said them "commies" were just in name. Uh huh.

Their government told them that the virus was an American attack. Denying masks to Americans might be considered patriotic. I also suspect that you don’t have a clue what communism actually is.

Haha! Not many apparel factories domestically, let alone idle. That ended soon after NAFTA.

There is still a little but the scale production is in SE Asia and Central America. Anyway this was/is pretty doable. Lots of empty planes sitting around to fly them home in.

There were many Americans who did the same for their own profit. You need look no further than certain posters in this very thread.

I'm not trying to be pessimistic, but it's not that easy. I've been in textiles for the past 25 years, and still working as essential for Medical, Military, Public Safety end uses. Some small scale (relatively) U.S. cut and sew facilities are trying to move to make surgical type masks, they are not the NIOSH type masks needed for critical use. The entire supply chain has been is disarray since the beginning of the year because almost all dyes and chemicals originate in China. Last week, we were informed the cut and sew facilities we ship to in Honduras and El Salvador shut down for at least the next month and are no longer accepting shipments. Retooling, resupplying, retraining in textiles, or making ventilators for that matter, probably can't happen soon enough. This is the result of a global economy and the pursuit of the highest profit above all. As in all things, we reap what we sow.

CDC no masks/coverings policy made this virus so much worse in the US. I'm willing to bet more people didn't take this virus seriously because they didn't have to wear masks. In public's mind: mask = caution and danger. No mask = everything is fine and overblown.

Early on in this thread, I said everyone in the US needed to wear masks to protect themselves and others. I came to that conclusion because when I was researching and following the early outbreak of this coronavirus, every picture I saw from South Korea had people wearing masks in public. And every picture I saw from 1918 Spanish flu had people wearing masks and scarfs in public. Something told me these people were no fools. We were the fools to believe the CDC, and we were the fools to believe we knew more than the people who had prior experience battling deadly virus. People in Asia are no fools. And people back in 1900 were pretty smart as well. US and Europe citizens will now suffer and die because of our dishonesty.

I agree US and Europe had time to manufacture more masks. South Korea very quickly got over 130 companies to make KF-94 masks, which is their version of N95 masks. It just requires leadership and determination by people in charge.

Here's article on how South Korea solved its face mask shortage.
