When they say large gatehrings they mean crowds of 250 or more.

But, what about a constant stream of people going to the store? If the virus can live for an hour or more in the air, what's not to say that I go food shopping and come into contact with the droplets of an infectious person who was there 30m before? 1k people food shopping in a day is very real. Wouldn't that be an issue as well? Just asking.

Of course. That's why people were buying toilet paper and water last week. They didn't want to go out for it this week... or next week... or the week after that... (and so on). Practice social isolation.

Then what about the cashiers, and other people who work retail? They aren't closed yet. Or, it seems at all. I know all the local converience stores are still open.
I wonder if this will change though. As this virus ramps up we could see a virtual lockdown on EVERYTHING.

Questions I have. 1). Why is Africa not blowing up with this virus? Chinese have pretty much taken over economic control of the continent the last decade yet not much news of infections running rampant in African countries. Most of the reported cases in Africa are from European and North American travelers who traveled to Africa and tested sick while there. Not much news of local transmission. Why is that? 2). Could the hot climate and relatively young population in African countries helping to prevent the spread there? Or is Africa screwed like the rest of us and we'll soon see cases blowing up there in the future?

Uhhh it's pretty obvious dude - it's the same reason that there haven't been a ton of cases reported in LATAM.... these are overall shithole countries that don't have the means to diagnose or test people.

I indicated this earlier - but the ones that are actually developed countries in the southern hemisphere ARE reporting (Australia, New Zealand, South Africa).

That's what everyone else fears too.

Same concerns.

Apparently our POTUS won't be tested for the virus even though lots of people he has interacted with have confirmed it. I find that rather odd, why would you not get tested?

Well, of the two they mentioned one denies that he tested positive. Still, I'd test if I were him.

Coaches don't face the demand for return on investment expected of professors at research universities. Profs are expected to pull in enough money to cover their own salaries, their grad students, their equipment, lab space, plus the 30-100% overhead (varies by university) to cover administrators and other university needs. The return on investment for sports is ridiculously low compared to what universities demand of their research faculty.

Coaches get fired all the time for the team underperforming, which leads to apathy toward the team and revenue drop. And yes it is insane but I can think of at least two schools that owe a great lot of their popularity academically to big time sports.

I just came back from quick shopping trip because my daughter wanted to buy some new skincare products. Decent number of people at the strip mall. No one wearing any masks, employees or customers. I tried to wear my N95 mask and my wife made me take it off because she said I was embarrassing her. She said it's too early to use masks here. I think we're in trouble as a country because wearing masks outside is not socially accepted norm here. Meanwhile, in China and South Korea, everyone wore masks while battling this coronavirus. It's socially accepted and expected there. You're the oddball if you don't wear one. Government told everyone to wear masks and said that was super important. People will avoid you and give you the dirty eye if you don't wear mask.

It's going to be interesting to see who ends up being right in this mask debate. USA where mask use is discouraged and told it's not really effective vs China and SK where masks were considered vital tool in combating the spread of the coronavirus.

Both sides are stupid, because...again... it only has effective usage if you ARE the contaminated and you are trying to contain YOU spreading it.

It's just like excessively buying toilet paper - it robs people that have actual use for it and it ends up just fucking us all over.

Pretty soon it will be socially acceptable to wear my Darth Vader mask in public!

That's not true. N95 masks absolutely do lower your risk of contracting it. All those official warnings saying NOT to wear masks with the rational that they only help prevent spreading if you have it are carefully-worded to say "surgical masks." When they mention N95 or better masks at all they say not to hoard them because medical professionals need them. That's the real reason they are pushing the idea that masks don't help.

Now, even N95 masks really don't help much unless you have them fitted correctly, replace them frequently, avoid contaminating yourself when removing them, etc. Also, your eyes are just as much a vector for infection as your mouth and nose, so eye protection is crucial if you are on the front lines. Definitely be mindful of touching/rubbing eyes and wear glasses or goggles if you can. Definitely close your eyes and get out if someone sneezes or whatever.

Look at the end of the day it's this: People that are your general run of the mill people can have a FAR FAR FAR more likelihood of avoiding the virus than wearing an N95 mask by simply doing 3 things:
1. Avoiding public places
2. Avoid close contact with others if you do have to be in public
3. Wash your hands often and always do so before touching yourself

Those 3 alone will reduce your chances far more than an N95 mask ever will. Regardless of wearing a mask, if you don't obey those 3 rules then you're fucked. Regardless of having an N999999 mask.

...and if you do have to go somewhere with other people, like you ran out of toilet paper or something ( ;) ), then the N95 mask can help.

Went to the supermarket to pick up an Rx. The checkout line ran across the store. This store is usually dead. I didn't stick around to see what was on today's panic list.

Where in the hell are they going to get those fixed when the Genius Bar is closed? The independent repair shops aren't going to be able to handle the volume.
Maybe this will encourage them to not get locked-in to a company that has such draconic repair policies. You know, like the rest of us.

My wife showed me news footage of situation in Italy. Situation there is looking really dire and eerie similar to pictures and reporting I saw coming out of Wuhan and China during their struggle to contain it. It looks like people are being left to die in Italy now because they don't have the resources to treat and house the huge number of the sick. Pretty disturbing news coverage. But what I noticed in the video was everyone in Italy is now wearing masks. At least all the public captured in that video. So Italy has embraced the usage of masks in public. I think masks are going to be the social norm for rest of Europe very soon. I can see UK and US holding out on usage of masks though.
