New to me 2006 STI

Reading back on my posts, you're correct.

Hybrid, nice subie - and the only thing that was weird to me is that you edited the content of your OP which is a pet peeve of mine.

But no matter - my apologies; let's continue on past the old person rabble rabble stuff



So... leaving it stock is a good idea, in my opinion. I've found I'd rather spend a few extra $ and get a faster car versus modding it all out. A stock STI will be a rare find in a few years!

TBH I don't think I did enough research on it either. But the price, year, and mileage were all right. I was looking at getting a WRX but all the used ones had high mileage, like upwards of 60,000 and were all the same price as the STI. The STI is faster stock, has a better transmission and suspension stock, and the insurance is cheaper since its an older model. From what I understood on the NASIOC forums, is that the WRX has the same 5-speed transmission as an Impreza and isn't really meant to take the abuse people throw at it. The STI is more beefed up so it can take a fair amount of abuse. Although, this one feels smooth as a babys ass when i'm driving fast.

I was honestly looking at getting a mini cooper S to save some money, but figured the STI would be a lot more fun, especially in the snow and dirt roads I drive on frequently. I might just hand onto it for a year and then sell it.

Old people are great when it comes to cars. They usually own a garage and they use their cars less than anyone else. I bought an off-lease car that is about 4 years old and it only has about 40,000 miles on it; it was likely leased by an old person as a winter car and nothing more.

Do you seriously think old people aren't entitled to have nice cars?

Isn't the STI one of those cars that only comes with a manual transmission? I don't know any old people who drive manual. They all seem to want automatic transmissions and a V8 engine.

If it were automatic then yeah I could see that overheating pretty bad, but how is the manual going to fail? I wouldn't expect the gears to just shear off unless you were flogging the hell out of it.

Not driving a car is sometimes worse than driving the car hard; a car is meant to be driven. many older folks will let a car sit all winter with gas in the tank and nothing getting lubricated. Its not about how many miles, its about how regular it is used.

Thats why I refused to get a lightly-used STi vs. a new WRX. Unless I know the owner, I don't want to invest that much $$$ into the unknown unless I am ready to invest my own $$$ and time to fix issues down the road.

Not quite. The Scooby fans can jump in here and throw more light on this. But I believe the issue with Rex gearboxes only comes when you start modding like crazy (100+ hp over stock) or if you keep doing hard launches and plenty of drive shock. Also, only the '02s and '03s were known to have issues with the tranny.

The STi tranny, on the other hand, is known to take a lot more HP/TQ without giving up.

**Disclaimer: All this is snippets of info I've gleaned from my Scooby crazy friends who all wanted me to buy one - even though I don't need AWD down here in America's Wang** :biggrin:

I know a handful of older people who drive manual transmissions. My grandparents always did, and the people I bought the car from had a Boxster S in manual. We have a few older customers at work who drive manuals too....its not unheard of. I don't expect them to have been doing any autocross or street light drag races, but they probably terrorized on ramps pretty frequently.
 
Really nice car! My best friend had a Silver '05 and got to drive it when we traded cars for a week. That thing looks as close to mint as reasonable and should be a blast to drive.

Also, I've seen older women driving everything from a Neon SRT to a CTS-V and a C6 Z06. It does seem out of place, but I figure they go in wanting a little bigger engine and somehow get talked into these cars. I know my 67 year old dad would be cruising in around in something marketed to a younger crowd if his knees weren't so bad.

My first car's top speed was 140km/h. I know this because I tested it. Then I got a Civic and its top speed was 200km/h. I know this because I tested it. Then I had the Corolla with a top speed around 170km/h. I know this because I tested it. I'm now old enough to know it's a bad idea to push a car to top speed.
A lot of us could possibly be dead right now if our first car was something like a Corvette or a Mustang V8 or a WRX STI. The top speed is too damn fast and it's only a matter of time before your friends taunt you into finding out how fast it goes.

If my future son sucks and is a huge disappointment, I'll give him a super fast car for his 16th birthday then let nature take its course.

I would think that a lot of young folks killed by Camaros and Mustangs were killed by the available torque, not by the top end speeds. They lost control from the torque, most likely.

First car I bought. I drove around a beater hand me down corolla for 8 years, and I inherited an S2000 from a friend. But this is the first one I actually bought.

Not like i'm gonna be maxing this thing out on I70, but would like to take it to some autox events when the season starts back up. I took it out in a parking lot tonight, that was fun. Smells like clutch and diff.

I don't see how the torque would kill them though. You're going slow, you mash the gas, tires spin, and you gently go into the ditch. The car is ruined but you'll be ok. Speed is a little different. You go off the road at 100mph and you are dead. You hit a light pole at 100mph and you are dead. You hit another car at 100mph and you are dead. Crash your Geo Metro at 10mph and you are dead :awe:

That's how I see it too. My brother's STI is silver, and every WRX at the dealership is blue. I really like that blue color.

We can see countless videos of drivers losing it and crashing even at low speeds in a high powered rear-drive car when the torque breaks the rear end loose.

Teens haven't got a clue as to how easily and quickly those rears will break traction on a rainy day or a cold morning.

It happens all the time here in NC. You can drive around and count the roadside markers and damaged pine trees.

Yep. The guy I bought my CTS-V was probably in his mid-40's, and he had bought it from his dad last year.

Hah, you're lucky if that happens... 'gently go into the ditch' doesn't happen unless you're going really slow.

Wrapped around is better than sliced in half... I recall seeing at least one accident in HS where a vehicle going about the speed limit was cut in half by a tree when it went off the road and rolled.

I also remember a kid in who got on the gas coming out of a 20mph turn on our HS campus, his truck over steered, he over-corrected, and promptly drove off the road and rolled his truck down a hill.

It's my firm belief that every 16y/o should have to go through an auto-x or other emergency driving program before they get their license. Driver's ed just doesn't normally cover emergency driving.
