The way it is handled in another forum that I like when it comes to evidencing posts is that when someone makes a claim, they are not initially required to source it. However, anyone can then challenge the claim and the original claimant has three options at that point; they can withdraw the claim, they can provide a source, or they can leave the thread (as a practical point since you can't really stop them). If the article they link doesn't support the claim, challenge them on it again. If they refuse to source the claim but keep debating, they can be reported. At that point usually what happens is a mod will post a note that they have been formally challenged and a demand for support, which, if not met results in formal reprimand.

I'd like to see a system like that for content moderation.

I would love this!

Niether should wikipoedia if that`s the case....read wikipedia disclaimer...

Most wiki articles cite their sources so it's easy to fact check.

Then you should be able to site the drudges source.....also did you read the wikipedia disclaimer.....didn`t think so...

This is precisely the kind of crap I'd like to get a way from. Nothing in my post was derogatory.

The reason I asked the question is because the Wikipedia disclaimer says a lot about who posts and even says in a round about way that you shouldn`t take it at face value.

I am glad you would like to get away from people questioning you...but that is a valid form of dialogue even in the new forum.

I did not call you any names or be little your in anyway.....you don`t have to read the disclaimer but it would help you to form a knowledgeable opinion about Wikipedia......why do you think quite a few colleges( not all but quite a few)will not allow references to Wikipedia....

Wikipedia is ok. The only time it REALLY failed was during the Iraq War since people kept editing it to ruin it. It has something like 15,000 changes and is 10,000 pages long.

This new forum looks interesting. I'm ready to debate Dr. Pizza regarding his views on gun control. If I get in, I'll need to empty out my ignore list, too.

It should be nice to have a place where you can read things on the internet and they just might be true. I feel like this would be a nice balance to the highly technical where we discuss the more philosophical side of things.

I also think that everyone should be let in so that there are enough voices to stay viable. Having the application process could be detrimental when someone is reading, wants to post and then has to wait for approval. Just be quick with the ban (posting in DC) hammer if they get out of line.

Should I post an application over in the moderator discussion forum or is this enough?
There is a process that needs to be followed.:colbert:

I would love to part of this new forum. I tend to avoid P&N because of the crazy loud obscene behavior. I'd love to be part of a civil, reasoned debate over various issues.

So mods I politely ask, can I please get a pass to this potential nirvana of internet debate?

Thanks.

Follow the process :colbert:

Lets say a member who does not have posting privileges in the debate forums wants to ask a question to be debated upon, will there be a way to do that? Like a "submit your question" type of thing?

A member does not have posting privileges for one of two reasons.

1) They have not asked.

2) They have demonstrated that they have an attitude that needs to be adjusted before they will be allowed.

If the reason is #2; then it may be an incentive for them to turn the attitude around.

They can always participate in P&N with others.

So if one applies and is declined. Will they be informed in a response to thee Mod Discussion post of that decision?

It wasn't the asking of the question that was a problem. You asked a question and answered it for him. That is the equivalent of putting words in his mouth. He was right to be offended by your tone. The bolded statement above is also derogatory.

all I did was insert my interpretation of what he basically said......
I did not correct his statement...I left it for him to tell me if I was right or wrong....sorry Danke......he can speak for himself....

making a statement that sounds derogatory in and of itself is not a bad thing.
In fact it really boils down to who is reading that statement whether it is derrogatory.....

Its how you make that statement that is important....especially in the suggested forum.....

Can I apply for the new forum? I basically want to read it for a while until I see how it pans out. Not sure you'll be letting new people in any time later. Wishing you'all the best.

You assumed he didn't read the disclaimer. Guess what? Every person on the entire internet knows wikipedia isn't a definitive source. Therefore, you assuming he didn't know this is the same as assuming he is an idiot.

I would like to join as well, thank you.
How do we apply? Just post in here, or PM a mod?

From the OP
Applications will be taken through Moderator Discussions. You may apply but one time, and will receive a yea or nay within at least one week. You must accept our decision without further comment. Continuing to clutter MD and presume upon our volunteer time will be considered sanctionable trolling.

Here's hoping it works out.

For the most part I have much respect for EK and still trying to decide about CK. I only mention this because in many posts CK comes across as well intentioned, logical, and looking to not only form a debate, but to learn the otherside.

When his posts are this way, it's great. When he goes into massive hyperbole, strawmans, and other massive logic fallacies despite being corrected upon them doesn't bode well for a future mod a debate board. I am not saying he can't do the job based off a few bad posts from him I've seen, just that I hope he can see his own failings in the past to know how to properly moderate something like this new proposed forum in the future.

Here's hoping it works out to a troll free forum. As a side note, my eyes tend to just glaze over most of the troll posts in the P&N forum anyhow unless the posts are specifically aimed at me for some reason. Which means I don't usually have that much of a hangup going through posts in regular P&N.

Perknose arranged for my old age cataract surgery so I have no excuse for glazing :p
