There are 5 schools in the top 50.

The SEC has 1 or 2 in the top 50 I believe (Vandy, obviously), and the Pac 10 has about 5 or so (but grouped closer to the top than the Big 10). So yeah, you're totally ... wrong.

Also, the Big Ten is the only conference that requires members to be in the AAU. Last time I looked the SEC only had 2 - Vanderbilt and Florida. Pretty sure most of the Pac-10 schools are in the AAU as well, but they don't have a requirement to join the conference.

Like I said, Pac 10 could legitimately brag. ACC, too. Big 10? Not really.

So now, since you were wrong, you're going to claim that the top 50 universities in the country is no big deal, and that even the list itself, is arbitrary and your anecdotal statement is more accurate? Right. Also, care to argue about mandatory AAU membership? Being in the AAU is no small deal either.

Wow, you have 1 highly ranked school, 1 in the 20's, and 3 in the 40's and you're bragging about academics? This is just the whole Big 10 in microcosm. Taking middling success and then talking like you're THE best. Sorry, but you're not the ACC or Pac 10. You're not that much better than the SEC. Stop bragging.

And one Academic membership doesn't make your University better.

See rcpratt's post, the numbers speak for themselves. The fact that you can't see how a top 50 school (even one in the 40's) is brag worthy is mind boggling; maybe it's because your homer division doesn't have many. One Academic membership? It's the AAU .. the best research universities in the nation.

As of 2004, AAU members accounted for 58%[1] of U.S. universities' research grants and contract income and 52% of all doctorates awarded in the United States. Since 1999, 43% of all Nobel Prize winners and 74% of winners at U.S. institutions have been affiliated with an AAU university.

If you think that UM is the top school in the Big 10 as far as academics are concerned, you're simply parading ignorance.

Northwestern absolutely stomps UM from an academic standpoint and anyone remotely familiar with academic ratings ought to know that.

IIRC Purdue, Illinois, Wisconsin and UM all have graduate schools of Engineering among the top 15 in the country too. And wasn't Illinois pretty much the mecca for US development of supercomputers for a very long time? I believe that they're still home to NCSA.

Undergrad rankings are admittedly screwy though. Too much variety from one field to another even within a university.

U of I is top 5 in the nation in Engineering colleges, Purdue also is an excellent engineering school

and LOL at presolve. one of the best overall engineering colleges in the nation/world, nothing to brag about. have fun with your great LAS programs though!

I know PSU's is top 25, with a few individual engineering programs in the top 10.

As for US News and World Report's validity, it's pretty controversial. Anyone who reads the Chronicle, knows that.

The Big Ten has six schools among the top 20 in the USN&WR list of "Top Undergraduate Engineering Schools where the highest degree offered is a doctorate."

The Pac-10 has two.

Yes, those numbers are cherry picked just like the numbers the SEC/Pac-10 people picked earlier. We can add them up if you want!

been bowl eligible 6 out of the last 7 seasons, including bowl games in 08 and 09. alamo and outback, playing missou and auburn, losing both in OT

yeah, so forgettable. I cant even name half the pac 10 either, but why would expect me to?
