God, the Big 10 is just so over the top in its narcissism. You don't see any of the other conferences pulling shit like this. Sure, the SEC may think highly of itself, but at least it doesn't call one of its divisions "legends," or have such stupid names for its trophies/awards.

While we're on the subject...

THE Ohio State University.

What the f?

They've said they weren't doing East/West or North/South from the beginning. It just doesn't actually work (Michigan too far east, Wisconsin too far north, etc.) and they are anal.

Meh. The names I can live with. The logo blows.

I'm the opposite -- the logo sucks, but I could live with it; the names, however, are inexcusable. Seriously, those names remind me of the names you'd find in an 8 year-old's pee-wee football league. Absolutely pathetic.

The trophy names are stupid too.

Yeh, the more I sit and stew on this it sounds like something cooked up for a college version of Techmo Bowl.

We need to chug on over to namby pamby land and find us some self confidence. This just wreaks of some progressive, PC influenced think tank. As if we needed any more reasons to invalidated us a dominant division.

The division names sound like league names for a pee-wee football league. And the logo -- LOL! Seriously, who came up with these? The sad thing is that I wouldn't be surprised if the Big Ten paid some big firm millions to come up with that.

jim delaney obviously thinks this is a good idea, just like he thinks the BCS works.

God dammit... just when I thought Big Ten couldn't do something to make me embarrassed to be a fan, here they go and do it, and might as well make it a double-whammy.

And hey, all you OSU haters, it's right on our logo and official name. We only repeat what we see. :p
Plus, when you have many well-rated programs, and are the largest university in the U.S. (we were until a few years ago, iirc), it kind of goes to your head; I mean, it's only natural, right? :D

I'll always love my school, but I'll only add the "The" when I know it's going to draw comment. One way or the other it gets discussed, because if I don't say it, people ask me about it anyway. Bastards.

The original Big Ten logo, with the team numbers in the spaces, should have went with that. The original artist was kind enough to add a version with 12, should have used it dammit. Much better looking.

League names are retarded, but I guess I can live with it. I'll probably never actually used those names in conversation though.

And I look forward to finally having a Conference Championship game. Hell, there's the off-chance, pending on Michigan fielding a good team again, that the absolutely final game of the year will be OSU v UM and it will actually have a lot of weight behind it. The way it's shaping up, I don't think the OSU v UM game will be at the end of the regular season, since they aren't in our division... but there's the chance we could face them twice, with the second time meaning a lot.
Of course, it would be weird as hell to see that, because if one team goes undefeated and only one team, that means one team going into the championship would already have one loss (and possibly to the other contender). The champion could walk away with having lost once and won once against the same team in the season, and in doing so giving the contender the same one-loss record the champ has. Man that would be weird to see... hopefully it doesn't happen often. One undefeated team in each division would be awesome, but that means it definitely couldn't be OSU v UM.

Michigan has already rewritten their fight song - The Victors:

Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan
The legends and best!
Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan,
The champions of the Legends!

It's not the words. It's the way it's said...but I know we've had this discussion before :D

I'm not exactly sure when the "The (THEE)" got put in there, but back when I was going to school there, everybody just called it "Ohio State" I graduated back in 1981, so I must have missed the memo from the athletic department :).

And I still can't wrap my head around the multiple levels of fail that happened to get to this...

One...it had to actually be thought up. Then it had to actually get out of some think tank of ideas and passed up the chain of command. Then somebody with a million dollar a year paycheck had to actually sign off on it.

How does this happen? Almost every single person that has heard it around here just thinks it's the laughing stock of the NCAA. Do these things just not get thought through and given a bit of a public perception test before being put into play?

Quite frankly I find the whole Big 10/Big 12 thing to be fucking stupid. All the other conferences make perfect fucking sense:

ACC - Schools up and down the atlantic coast
SEC - schools located in the Southeast
PAC-10 - Schools on the pacific cost

Why is it so hard to come up with a decent conference name? Not only that, but when the size of the conference changes and makes those names no longer viable, don't just change the logo, change the damn conference name to something that doesn't have to be redesigned ever couple of years.

It will never cease to amaze me how stupid a group of smart people can be. "A PERSON is smart. PEOPLE are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it." - Tommy Lee Jones

Blacksburg is what, a 5-6 hour drive from Norfolk? :sneaky:

Arizona, ASU, Utah, and especially Colorado aren't exactly close either.

The Big Ten is an incredibly recognizable name. It will never change. Now, choosing a name with the number of schools in the first place was pretty short-sighted.

Sounds like it's to parallel the Legends and Leaders thought process. One is a legend, while one is a more recent "leader"?

I did not know Arizona, Utah and Colorado were on the Pacific coast. Thanks for the geography lesson. :).

edit: Oh, and they have 12 teams now.

If that's the case, then Stagg-Paterno Championship Trophy makes no sense, or am I missing something? Is Paterno a "Legend" or a "Leader"?

I don't think so. It works for some of them, but it's definitely not a rule. I don't think the Woody-Bo trophy really fits it either.

I can make it in 3.5 :). VT isn't on the coast but Virginia is.

Yea, our awesome education system has been teaching this for years. Utah is right between California and Oregon...right?
