But it is not like I am investing anything in Netflix. I rent access to their stuff on a month-to-month basis. For me, streaming-only, nothing has changed. If anything changes for the worse for me, I may consider dropping it.

It seems to me that the all-DVD people are in the same boat.

I am not sure why anyone other than the people who NEED both would be canceling. I do not understand all the panties in a bunch.

As someone who is very new to Netflix (less than one year), I originally subscribed to streaming only, added the DVD and Bluray later on.

I found that most of the movies and TV shows that I want to watch are on discs, so I had to look extra hard to find stuff for streaming. I tolerate it because I can stream on the PS3 and my phone, Top Gear reruns are always funny (yeah and a few other shows). Since they've announced the separation of accounts, I promptly canceled the DVD portion, simply because I can get newer and more convenient option on the PS3 (read - Vudu).

Value for money, I can probably go with hulu plus, or Amazon prime and get the same streaming contents, heck I'm even tempting to look at blockbuster's service where you can get movies, streaming and games for ten bucks. Then there are red box, greencine, etc...and I'm sure you're familiar with apple tv and some other services, and they're fast encroaching in netflix.

I'm not the only one that can see those options available to me, I'm sure there are more. For Netflix CEO to make boneheaded moves like these, is corporate suicide.

Yup, Netflix has a content issue not a pricing issue.

I had no complaints about the price increase; it is less than cable, less than I would pay to rent movies at the video store back in the day, more available and I make full use of the service.

Breaking the service into two unrelated accounts, having to maintain two queues and take extra steps does not work for me. I used the mail service tangentially to the streaming anyway.

I was fine paying $24/mo for one-location-for-everything service, but now I am not getting that service. Downgraded to $8/mo streaming.

It's 1080i over cable/satellite, isn't it?

Yes, I believe it is for cable--though I know that at least Dish Network claims 1080p, though I don't know how true any of that is.

A lot of the major sports networks, like Fox, will broadcast in 720p b/c p > i for sports, regardless of resolution.

Honestly, I'd like to ditch the streaming and just use the DVD by mail service. Netflix's streaming library already sucks, and it will be even worse once they lose Starz Play.

change a free product into one you have to pay for, and then increase prices twice in a year?

stunned and amazed that people are complaining.

correct me if I'm wrong, but I never was able to get Netflix streaming for free.

was there some time when you could just go to their website, upon a brand new account, and OMG! get free streaming jsut for creating a user name?

That would be news to me.

seriously--anyone who thinks Netflix has less and/or poorer content than any other streaming service has kept their head buried in the sand.

I mean, I guess if you're pissed that you can't watch shitty Transformers movies through streaming, then fine....but not that any of those matter, really.

what is the problem with Qwikster? It's the same company, same service, different name? you changing just b/c of the horrible name?

I thought the same thing, too, until someone mentioned that those who use both streaming and DVD now have to use two websites. That is one of the biggest issues with the change.

free insofar as free for anyone already subscribing to netflix's dvd service.

I think you're trying to nitpick way too much with this rant. If you were a Netflix subscriber when streaming was added, you received streaming AT NO EXTRA COST. For the longest time, the price didn't change at all even after streaming was added.

It's amazing to see that Netflix has done more to destroy itself than Blockbuster, Amazon, and anyone else has, combined.

I think those that claimed it was a free service are nitpicking. It was an awesome extra service to subscribers, but it was never free.

I simply don't understand, though, how those of us that received it as that "free" service on inception could ever assume that it would remain that way.

This is a business, and they had some lucrative contracts to make that service happen. No way in hell that would remain. Netflix isn't here as a charity to just give stuff away to everyone--which is more or less what their pricing was doing at the time.

I'm still waiting for a reason why anyone would keep streaming only?
Selection is poor, you don't get any new releases, and quality is just ok.

Unless you just like to watch the same old movies over and over, then i guess i get it, but otherwise I don't see the point.

Personally, I think their streaming service has a great selection of the stuff I like to watch, but I like B-grade horror and scifi, stuff like Zombie Women of Satan. Scream queens and rubber masks all the way!

But even I have to admit that their streaming service is very limited in it's selection, I can see Zombie Women of Satan, but they still don't have the classic bad horror movie Hardware up, and I can forget about any blockbuster movie I might want to see. They are not even very good at getting independent films up, I would like to see Super! (2010) but it is DVD/BR only.

Really? XFinity is pretty sweet. Couple that with *free* streaming apps from the content producers (ABC/CBS/ect.) and Netflix is irrelevant.

Unless you want to stream a documentary or award winning films like The Expendables (LOL)

The streaming was never free, I paid for that service along with my DVD rentals. I think Netflix was hoping that streaming would cut down on the cost of shipping, which at least at my household worked, where I would go though 2-3 movies a week before streaming, after I went though 3 a month at most, streaming the rest. With this change I am going to cancel the DVD portion all together, as I don't really get much utility out of it and it is going to be a hassle. The few movies I want to see that I can't get streaming I will get from Redbox or Blockbuster kiosks. If Netflix had left the websites along and slowly raised prices over next few years a few dollars every couple of months I probably would not have canceled my DVD subscription. Now that I am not attached to the disk mail order service I'll probably also spend some time looking at the competition in the streaming market to see what their offerings look like, Hulu+ seems to be popular, maybe it will better serve me.

So, the service was never free but now it is more expensive then it use to be and I am questioning how much I get out of it, and that prompts me to check out the competition.

People are putting so much effort into misguidedly complaining about Netflix while no one seems to care about a man whose guilt is far from certain about to be put to death.

I feel like there's a pretty big happy medium between free and sundering Netflix in half, though.

Children are also being raped in Africa. Why are you so preoccupied with the death of a single cop killer whose conviction has been upheld by 3 different courts?

yeah, I get that.

But they haven't really made it a secret, in the last 2 years, at least, that they see themselves as a streaming service, first, and have always wanted to move to that exclusively.

If fracturing that mail-order business off into something else, and adding a game service allows them to reduce cost on the streaming aspect--effectively allowing them to afford the upcoming licensing increases for streaming content with a minimal increase in service cost for customers--then it seems like the best option that they have.

No idea how long the two will remain as effective "partners," or if the split will see the Qwikster entity slowly fade into irrelevance. yes, the name is no less lame that bullshit like "Xfinity," and it appears that enough people are abandoning ship simply because of the lame name so I guess that does hurt them starting off.

Guess we'll just have to see what happens after a year or two.

For me--I'm abandoning cable completely, and Netflix is the only real option. The content is spectacular--I don't watch reality shows and Bravo TV, or have any desire to watch new release meathead type movies--so there is no reason to hold onto cable or complain about Netflix content for me.

I get almost tight in my loins reading from people who keep defending the streaming content of Netflix, as if it's great and only people who have poor taste don't appreciate that and wow what a great deal for $9. Keep it up, folks. Good fun.

The rest of us know its streaming content sucks. Netflix is facing down a barrel of a gun now, it's unclear how they'll get through the next few years.

Today their stock down 9.54%. That is a huge hit. I think their CEO should be removed, he's obviously fvcked things up in the past few months. Only by sacrificing one of their own can Netflix appease the blood thirst of the angry public hehe

So, I am not actually enjoying the shows I and my family watch on Netflix streaming?
