This, i might actually try it if only for the games. I just dont have the time to dedicate to games like i used to, renting it for a month or two then switching to a different one might be best. (and cheaper then buying)

yep, I've barely picked up console games in the last ~3 years. I only recently played infamous because sony gave it away for free (Still haven't finished it, lol).

there are a few I'd like to try out that I have missed--the Drake's games, GoW3, etc. I think renting would be the best option.

though if it's as shitty as I hear Gamefly is, then I don't know..

The same question I always had. The response I usually get is "I don't watch TV so its all new to me". Unfortunately you are getting the dregs of TV/Movies from the streaming service.

no you aren't.

tons of great shows, and Netflix has a shit-ton of very, very good movies.

you just have to not have shit taste in film to appreciate the content.

not possible over streaming. maybe, maybe in South Korea, today...but doubtful.

or rather, it may be advertised as "1080p," but you'll get a bitrate of 1 mbps

(lol--not sure if that can actually carry 1080p, but whatever)

Yeah, 1080p with 5.1 (or 7.1) would take at least 20Mb/s+ and closer to 35Mb/s with overhead. 720p with 2.1 takes about 3.5Mb/s right now. 3D could be even higher.

do you know what is the average bitrate for 1080p over cable or satellite?
I know the video is quite compressed.

I know it is much lower, even 20-30Mb/s would be at least somewhat compressed (from raw bluray at 54Mb/s). When watching VOD with FIOS and a 1080p movie my internet speed takes a hit (from 30Mb/s to about 22) So i would assume somewhere around 8Mb/s for cable/fiber streaming. But that is fairly compressed.

i don't think you've spent much time with their streaming, or you're in canada.

if you limit yourself to shit action movies and shit sci-fi--then yeah--there isn't much on netflix streaming.

But they offer a lot of great content, surprisingly good, actually--but if you have the taste of a 12 year-old teenage boy, you might likely never find it.

(unless you're a 12 year-old boy that's into jap cartoons--b/c there is a crapton of that bullshit on there)

No, there's just not much on streaming at all. You're right that there's a ton of Japanimation. There's also 11 straight-to-DVD "Land Before Time" movies, 9 "Power Rangers" movies, the Comedy section is all stand-up and Tyler Perry (no real comedy movies). I could go on with examples of just how bad streaming sucks on Netflix, but I haven't logged in in a while and ended up dropping it, it was so worthless.

oh shit, I thought BluRay was ~35mbps? did something happen in the ~2 years I haven't been paying attention to the industry?

😵

I don't get all the hate for Netflix (streaming) content selection.

On any given night, I switch between 100+ episodes of South Park, ST:TNG, Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, etc. Enough to keep me and the GF entertained and certainly worth the streaming price.

Now, I do laugh when I see new trash movies on there like "GI: Joe." Yet 90% of the newer (last 10 years) I want to watch are DVD only. But then I scratch my head when Pixar's "Toy Story 3" is on Instant but "The Incredibles" is not. WTF? There just seems to be little reason to it other then, "You can have our crap but damn you if you want any of the good movies we've made in the past 10 years."

I will probably quit the DVD service. I will quit streaming if they hike again.

Here is the bitrate for Star Wars I-III on blu.

The Phantom Menace has an average video bitrate of 28 Mbps and average audio bitrate of 4.6 Mbps.
The Attack of the Clones has an average video bitrate of 29 Mbps and average audio bitrate of 4.0 Mbps.
Revenge of the Sith has an average video bitrate of 30 Mbps and average audio bitrate of 4.7 mbps.

I don't have the content selection right now. But if they lose starz and continue to lose stuff, then I won't be happy. The streaming supplements my discs, so I need both services.

I'll always want discs for big movies and new releases. I use the streaming for documentaries and catalog movies that I watch when I'm on the treadmill or if I want to randomly watch a movie.

x1000.

this is the only thing going on here.

If one didn't see how this would end up the day they unfurled the original streaming service, then one has shit for brains.

If Netflix was brand new, and was offering $8/month for unlimited DVDs or streaming, everyone would be praising the hell out of it. But because the prices were increased a little bit and some other superficial changes, people aren't intelligent enough to realize that it's still a great deal. The people who complain about the streaming selection are the worst, those people don't even warrant a response

change a free product into one you have to pay for, and then increase prices twice in a year?

stunned and amazed that people are complaining.

What is pissing me off is the people who thought it would never increase in price, inflation alone would account for some increase in price.
