They would only have to file together if they are married.

Well then we're back to square one. How are they breaking the law?
This thread needs more CPA and/or EagleKeeper.

on it's face they may or may not be

they might both file single, both live in the same house, he can make a ton of money and she can claim no income but 2 dependents.

they MAY be committing fraud if they in turn declare themselves married for the purpose of whatever benefit.

a similar situation would be if they were long term bf/gf, she claims 2 kids no income and he makes all the money. the law wouldn't be broken and people would just assume they were in a LT relationship.

alternatively, he could be running a cash business and playing MAJOR tax fraud, renting the house from someone while on paper only earning 20k/year

Yup, report them or you're doing a disservice to the tax paying public.

Saw a bumper sticker last week..." Work hard because millions of welfare recipients are counting on you."

Made me laugh for a second but then felt angry after that...remembering all the abuses I've seen in my lifetime.

When will the welfare system be fixed...rid of all the abuses and only deserving people getting it? Never probably...

just found out that my neighbor's wife claims no income and the kids get free medical from the state as a result. The dad owns a landscaping business and makes a bunch of money.

I was thinking of reporting them, but I'm waiting for the ATOT "mind your own business" reasoning. Is it wrong to be peeved that my taxes are paying for their kids' well being while they drive new BMW's and take month long vacations?

report them! there's a reward for welfare fraud to boot

dumb question but wouldn't it be a question of fraud (if not tax evasion) just based on income/assets? whether the 2 individuals with kids are either single or married, the fact that there's alot of wealth or assets makes it doubtful that the kids could qualify for the healthcare which is presumably based on lack of income?

I have a family member that owns a landscaping business and does so paying taxes, social security etc... as they should. They were audited for sales tax. They weren't found guilty of any wrong doing but this led to them going on a crusade of why they were audited when there are offenders on every street in that industry. The basic answer from the IRS is that if you don't report your income, they don't come after you, as they don't have anything on record about the offenders. So basically if you follow the rules and you pay taxes, you have a higher chance of being screwed by the government.

that would well if they're filing single then technically the kids and wife would own "zero" assets

i missed that
cash business, he doesn't report his income

so if he makes $50,000 in cash each year, if you look at his tax returns he probably reports $10,000 income and gets a EIC bonus check from the IRS each year (ok , it is really YOUR money he is stealing)

That's my guess too. Report his ass.

Just because someone owns the most expensive house on the block, doesnt mean they are well off, they could just be financially stupid. While you might get a personal sense of satisfaction by reporting them, you could possibly uproot those kids entire lives. I'd say mind your damn business.

maybe, but the cars say otherwise

report i say.

My G/F just moved to AZ and has two girls and just applied for state healthcare for them until she gets her healthcare from work. Thats the type of thing its meant for. Not what these people are doing.

Grab your last couple paychecks and see that line where it says Federal Tax? If you don't mind that deduction going to them, then don't do anything.
