Had the same thing happen with my next door neighbor. The couple wasn't married and the husband owned a restaurant and bought a Harley and a giant Nissan SUV close to one another. They were also looking for a $300k to $500k house. In the meantime, both their kids were on Georgia's Peach Care program and the mom used the state's healthcare program to pay for her pregnancy and childbirth.

I think I posted about it here actually.

They are indeed assholes, but I don't know if what they're doing is technically illegal. It's certainly abusing the program and public funds, but is it actually illegal?

Yes, it's called fraud
Look, I'm not defending these leeches. But how is it fraud? Are they lying? If they're unmarried and file seperately, how is it illegal? Keep in mind that I don't really have any idea what I'm talking about, I'm just curious how they're breaking the law.

It depends on the state (I think). Here, if you're on welfare, etc., you better not be living with someone with a high paying job. I believe the applications ask for the members and incomes of people in the "household" not "family."

yeah they've got BMW's a new Tahoe, a new F350, and the Dad is getting a custom made chopper next month. Their house is worth twice as much as the next highest valued house on the block.
Plus he owns another house down the street. Did you end up reporting them?

No, my wife and I were really torn on the subject. On the one hand, we were ticked at what they were doing but we both loved their two little girls. We ended up moving not long after so nothing came of it.

yep we're having the same issue. My daughter is the same age as their kids, and they're the only kids on the block. In fact we all get along really well.

that said, it's like they're stealing from me.
It's not "like"; really they are.

Just anonymously report them. Then you can still have their kids friends with yours.

Never heard of zillow.com?

Well that tells you how much the house is worth. How do you know they have state insurance? How do you know they're evading taxes?

Let's just say ALL OF THAT cost 150k. even bare minimum that's over 1500 in car payments/insurance payments A MONTH. poor people don't pay 1500 in car payments a month

I see a lot of assumption here. with all the crazy loans given out for house - they might up to their ass in debts. Make sure you have all your fact straight before you accuse someone of a crime. This thread and the "Child Abuse" thread show a lot of people like to jump to a conclusion when they really don't know all the facts.

Are you kidding me? Unless they use it 100% for work (which I highly doubt) then it's not a business expense. If they are using it as a personal vehicle and STILL claiming it all as a business expense, then it's fraud.

And if they ARE using it as a business expense then they still aren't POOR since they could otherwise divert that money into oh i don't know, INCOME?

shit you act like just because it's a business expense means that the govt' is subsidizing all of it. it's a DEDUCTION meaning it decreases taxable income.

Example 1: Luxury car example (aka these asshats)
income 100k tax bracket 30%
5k auto expense
Result: 1500 in tax savings, 1 car, net -3500/month

Example 2: cheaper car
income 100k, tax bracket 30%
1k auto expense
Result: 300 in tax savings, 1 car, net -700 in month

So you'd essentially have an extra 2800/month to income per month

Conclusion: if these asshats were poor they'd have cheaper vehicles. period.

there has to be more to the story than this. I mean you'd be better off filing as married than not and using that to get free health care for the children no? Filing joint is always a good idea if you're married, hell some people get married just for tax reasons alone.

I have a stupid question. How does the OP know what health insurance these people have?
I couldn't tell you what ins my parents or siblings have let alone a neighbor.

That being said. Some states offer health insurance to children based on liquid assets and lack of other coverage. If the father is a private contractor/landscaper, he probably doesnt have insurance for himself and his wife or his employees for that matter, its not cheap to get a plan without a group discount. Many people in that situation chose to keep the money rather than pay for insurance. The stupidity is that state funded health coverage for children is still bottom of the barrel coverage, most of the doctors that accept it do so out of despiration as it pays about 10% of what other plans pay. So you get better doctors if you pay for better insurance.

There are too many unknowns to go sticking your nose in to their business.

So wait... you don't have any problem with the taxpayers paying for their kids' healthcare as long as they write off their $150k in vehicles as "business expenses" to make their income appear to be lower? You're fine with the government subsidizing their lifestyle like that? They are clearly bringing in enough money to pay for the kids' insurance if they cut out the frivolous purchases. It doesn't matter if they're up to their eyballs in debt. That doesn't make them poor, it just makes them stupid. They still have enough money coming in to make the payments on all of their stuff, or they wouldn't have it anymore.

The "mind your own business" attitude here is out of control. When MY money is being used to subsidize someone else's lifestyle, it IS my business. You may be willing to lie down and let someone fuck you in the ass and not say anything because it's none of your business, but I'm glad someone out there is willing to alert the authorities so his allegations can at least be investigated.

I'm fairly bleeding heart and I would have reported them in a heartbeat. Fraud like this ruins the very thing we bleeding hearts are crying for; a level playing ground for kids. These kids already lead a privileged life, the last thing they need is our tax dollars.

Drop a dime on them. IF everything you say is indeed true, they're committing fraud and stealing...

Most likely, if they're getting "welfare medical", they're getting some other kind of assistance too, HOWEVER, it MAY be possible that they are paying for the coverage. In Kahleeforneeya, if your income is too much for free Medi-Cal, you can sometimes still get it by paying a floating fee to the state. (depend on the total family income) It's cheaper than medical insurance through commercial companies, however, the coverage sux...it's still better than NO insurance, especially for families.

Yeah, because voting Democrat has soooo much to do with Mexicans committing fraud...and it's not like any Republicans ever commit fraud.

Personally, I'd rather see fraud committed to get kids health care than to see the kinds of fraud committed by corporations that cost us taxpayers BILLIONS of $$$. However, I know the Repubs don't see it that way. They support big business ripping us off yet discourage helping poor people.

This IS P&N.
