This is one of the things I never understood. Employees giving 2 weeks, but employers not.
and by that I mean that why do people give two weeks. It takes about 30 days to hire people. (two weeks to find them and then they give two weeks)

A little thing called at will employment - it saves them time/cost having to pay you for 2 more weeks with the chance of you causing havoc or stealing company property. Usually if a company let's you go - they already have a plan in place to either give your workload to someone else.

I was a database administrator for a small privately owned mail advertising company in Baltimore.

But yesterday at the end of the day, my manager told me they were letting me go and hiring an outside vendor to handle their clients databases and files. Along with managing their client's data, I also presorted their mail lists for our mailings.

What really irked me was they didn't give me a 2 week notice or not even a week notice for that matter. He had waited for mostly everyone to leave the office before telling me and he watched me pack my things and pack my car up.

There were only a few of my co workers still left, but I didn't even get a proper chance to tell them goodbye and shake their hands. I felt like it was very unprofessional of what happened.

And the most disgusting thing of all.........the owners and the accountant responsible for making this decision had left the office early today because they are cowards. They couldn't even thank me for the 4 years that I had given to their company.

In the end this was probably the best thing to happen to me in terms of finding out what type of personalities they really had and I will do my best to find a job working with decent human beings.

Just had to vent ATOT and I feel better already! :)

that's pretty much how my old company used to do it to the T.

When I got let go from my previous job, it was an out of left field type situation as well. Got in to work, the GM caught me on my way to my desk and said to stop by his office. I didn't think anything odd because they had asked me to make a big move to Europe and wanted it to happen like right away (because yeah, it's easy to drop your life and move half way around the world for a couple years.) When I said I couldn't do it because of the time frame and scary lack of details (this was 2 days before Christmas no less) I got told well if I wasn't going to do it, I would be finished working for the company. I was finished working for the company.

That little meeting was around 9am, but I finished the day out as I had a ton of things going on and just walking away would of only put some of my soon to be ex-co-workers, which many at that point I considered friends, in a really bad spot.

I worked with a lot of people from other offices across the country so my last day was pretty much spent getting things ready for damage control, and field a bunch lot of "wtf?" phone calls from the out of state guys. I did application engineering for custom units so I had a lot of different projects in various phases, there was no way anyone is jumping into the middle of that too smoothly in a short amount of time. They all tend to be on ridiculously tight deadlines as well. I ended up getting some really good references from those guys that essentially got screwed on deadlines for some pretty big projects.

Of course checks were coming the next day (yeah, on xmas eve... tell me about it,) and they shorted me on it. This was just for time worked as well as I got no severance pay. They were closing up for the full week between xmas and new years as well (yup, got screwed out of that too) so I had to wait til the new year to get that sorted out and file for unemployment. The fun wasn't over yet either as I was initially denied unemployment and given the reason of "You quit." o_O

As for not having anywhere to be on Monday morning, it sounds like your staying plenty motivated. As long as you keep busy and keep on top of the job hunt, which sounds like you will, you'll be fine. Just don't get too discouraged if it takes a bit longer than expected, the job market is still a bit funky IMO. Good luck!
