BTW, they were invited to the wedding, had never RSVP'd and did not give a give (except, of course, my walking papers).

Did they show up at the wedding?

I was working as a law clerk for a sole practitioner (His father was a good friend of my (now) future father-in-law). He fired me three days before my Bar results came out and 8 days before my wedding.
I heard from a secretary that his wife did not want the added expense of paying me as a lawyer.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act
WARN offers protection to workers, their families and communities by requiring employers to provide notice 60 days in advance of covered plant closings and covered mass layoffs. This notice must be provided to either affected workers or their representatives (e.g., a labor union); to the State dislocated worker unit; and to the appropriate unit of local government.
In general, employers are covered by WARN if they have 100 or more employees, not counting employees who have worked less than 6 months in the last 12 months and not counting employees who work an average of less than 20 hours a week. Private, for-profit employers and private, nonprofit employers are covered, as are public and quasi-public entities which operate in a commercial context and are separately organized from the regular government. Regular Federal, State, and local government entities which provide public services are not covered.
i'm not kicking anyone when they're down. i'm bringing reality back to the forefront.
i'm sorry, but EXPECTING a 2 week notice when you get FIRED... is laughable.
You're fired when you will be replaced by someone else doing the same job. You're laid off when the position won't be filled again for whatever reason.
my manager told me they were letting me go and hiring an outside vendor to handle their clients databases and files
they did replace him with someone else doing the same job.
granted its a contractor... but his position isn't being eliminated.
It's being eliminated as an in-house option. .
Except he wasn't fired. It's a semantic difference, but still distinctly different. You're fired when you will be replaced by someone else doing the same job. You're laid off when the position won't be filled again for whatever reason.

sorry to the OP, you'll bounce back.
Sucks to work in the United States. Over here in Finland, it's against the law to fire anyone without a two week notice. If you've worked in your position for at least 4 years, you receive a two month notice. OP, had you been working in Finland, you'd be working until early December![]()
I was a database administrator for a small privately owned mail advertising company in Baltimore.
But yesterday at the end of the day, my manager told me they were letting me go and hiring an outside vendor to handle their clients databases and files. Along with managing their client's data, I also presorted their mail lists for our mailings.
What really irked me was they didn't give me a 2 week notice or not even a week notice for that matter. He had waited for mostly everyone to leave the office before telling me and he watched me pack my things and pack my car up.
There were only a few of my co workers still left, but I didn't even get a proper chance to tell them goodbye and shake their hands. I felt like it was very unprofessional of what happened.
And the most disgusting thing of all.........the owners and the accountant responsible for making this decision had left the office early today because they are cowards. They couldn't even thank me for the 4 years that I had given to their company.
In the end this was probably the best thing to happen to me in terms of finding out what type of personalities they really had and I will do my best to find a job working with decent human beings.
Just had to vent ATOT and I feel better already!![]()
Cowards? At a company that produces spam? NONSENSE!
Did they at least give you 2-weeks severance? Not that they have to, but, it would be the professional thing to do in lieu of 2-weeks notice.

This must be your first job and you don't know how the real world works. Expecting 2 weeks notice that you are being terminated? LOL.
Here's the best part.....
"They couldn't even thank me for the 4 years that I had given to their company."
Did you thank them for paying your salary and giving you benefits for the past 4 years? They did their part. They don't owe you thanks.
