I guess you should specify that "stuff" does not include USB mice.

Read the manpage for MAKEDEV and see if it mentions input or usb. A clean Debian 2.2r1 installation makes them just fine.
Gentoo uses devfs, I've never had to use makedev with it.

As far as notfred not getting X to work, when were you trying it? I've been using gentoo for over a year and I've never had X fail once. I've compiled it at least 2 dozen times on multiple machines.

And as far as gentoo being faster than other distributions because you compile your own binaries, thats mostly a myth. The only reason(that I've noticed) it feels faster is because it isnt loaded to the brim by default with unnessecary services and bloat, like rh, mandrake, suse, etc are.

AIM is NFusi0n when I´m in Linux, and LuvMP3 in windows.
Hey guys, when I´m typing, if I press the ´ key, it makes the next letter accented. To get a ´, I need to type ´ twice. For example, if I type ´a, it will show up as á. How do I disable that?

and I´m recompiling the kernel again. 😀

emerge KDE finished this morning 🙂

At least he knows what he did and can probably fix it (presumably with help, since he's somewhat new to this). That's more than can be said for Windows, which breaks itself more than enough, with no way for mere mortals to fix it.

Nuclear, want some solid advice? Pick up "Running Linux" from O'Reilly. If you're serious about using Linux, scrounge up $30 or whatever it costs and get the book.

The 3rd Edition has been remaindered on Barnesandnoble.com for around $7 for the better part of the past year. The 4th Edition is a very recent release.

I'll probably just grab some Linux ebooks later and pour over them. 😛

Reinstalling Gentoo - again.
Hopefully it'll work this time. 😉
edit: SAME ERROR AGAIN WTF!!

Anybody want to bother to help me set up a non-root user? I know you aren't supposed to run as root all the time, but I have no idea how to make myself a user account that balances power with safety correctly. =\

IIRC, as root:

adduser username
passwd username
*enter password*

emerge superadduser
run it.
put that user in the games, wheel and portage groups.

ARGH FCK YOU GRUB FCK YOU IN YER GRUBBY BUTT!!!

emerge grub works fine
then i run "grub" and it just dies on me, spits out an error message, and forces me to hit the reset button (the cursor keeps flashing, but no amount of keyboard input will do anything)
i took a picture of the error....

It's done this twice!!
