My GPS was stoled!

I lock my car 99.99% of the time.
In the rush to leave for Easter weekend, I must have forgotten.

Now my GPS is gone. 🙁

On the bright side, they didn't steal my set of Pings in the trunk, or my radio 🙂

It just goes to show you... most thieves are opportunistic.

Now I get to shop for a new one!
It's like a forced map upgrade. 🙂

BTW, I had a Garmin Nuvi 4.3" 260, but am thinking about switching brands to a TomTom.
Which brand do you prefer?

This... GPS systems are pretty much good bait to break into your car.. even having the mount visible

Never leave your GPS in your car.
Buy a carrying case and take it with you.

Even if you lock your car, it won't stop them from smashing your windows if they see any sign that such unit is there.

Garmin > TomTom (at the moment).

yup this is the one factor that makes built in gps have a reason to exist. constantly removing gps is annoying. asshat thieves...

I'm not sure why people would want to mount the GPS to their car which would damage it, block their vents, or leave signs for thieves(ex: suction cup residue) etc....

I use the Garmin bean bag. I hide it under my car seat and bring it out from under if I'm going to use my GPS.

That would be nice, however I doubt that's available at the consumer level(<$300).
Garmin features a pin # and secret location.

If a thief steals a GPS that has both active, it would be useless for them because they won't be able to use it.
Of course they can always sell on eBay/Craigslist but that's besides the point.

Sexy female computer voice giving you turn by turn directions, warning of traffic, and showing your path three miles ahead > maps

Anyway, leaving any clue you have a GPS in the car is like putting a sign in your windows saying "Hey! Rob Me!" Leaving your mount on the window, leaving power cords out...any clue that there are any kind of portable electronics in the car invites trouble. Theives only go for sure things.

I've never been one to need a GPS. I find that learning my way around makes driving more enjoyable, especially in places that I'll have to eventually return. I tend to learn routes faster when I'm not having my hand held.

You don't know what you're missing. We've been to places we would NEVER have gone to because of the GPS. Face it- NYC, Chicago, Atlanta, etc can be downright scary to drive in. If you have someone telling you where to go it makes driving a lot more comfortable.

That friction mount is awesome! I had one until freakin' valets stole my GPS/mount that was in my locked glovebox. Those hookers.

What if you're driving to a new place you don't know?
Are you saying you don't use a GPS, print mapquest/google maps, or ask people for directions?
You just get in the car and drive to experience?

I have one because of the traffic features.
I don't want to sit in traffic for 30 minutes to 2 hours when I can avoid it.

I also use my GPS to document mileage for business expense in mapsource.

I don't leave my GPS in the car if I'm not using it.

Also, stop leaving important things in your glove compartment. That's the 1st place thieves will always go for. After that, they will probably go for the arm rest.
I keep the friction mount under my car seat.
 
In dash GPS systems can be stolen too.

I have a portable unit, I don't leave it in the car. The mount pops off in half a second, why leave it?
 
It would be nice if stuff like this didn't happen, but having lived in Durham for 4 years now I've heard just about everything when it comes to theft and robbery...

I've driven in all those cities. Not really that big of a problem. I know NYC well. I know Boston in and out because I lived there. And cities like Atlanta are quite easy since they're very structured and organized.

Nothing is more obvious than Phoenix. Where am I? Look at sign. Oh. I'm exactly "here"

I don't understand why peope go through the process of mounting which won't do achieve anything except block(or possibly damage) vents, or some other part of the car in the process.

i like my tomtom a lot, but i never leave it out in plain view, and....... i always lock my car doors wherever i am. it's just too easy to with a wireless key fob.
