Garmin.

I have suction cup marks on the windshield, but I always take it into my house or dorm with me.

If they see suction cup residue, they can still smash your windows and assume your GPS is in the glove compartment.
Whether it's actually there or not, you still have to pay for the smashed windows.

Buy this (assuming it's compatible with your Garmin unit).

Throw your suction cup away once you buy it. There's no need for them.

That friction mount is awesome! I had one until freakin' valets stole my GPS/mount that was in my locked glovebox. Those hookers.

Buy this and carry your GPS in it with you.

I don't leave my GPS in the car if I'm not using it.

Also, stop leaving important things in your glove compartment. That's the 1st place thieves will always go for. After that, they will probably go for the arm rest.
I keep the friction mount under my car seat.

Crooks don't look under the seats in your town?😛

They are more likely to check the glove compartment, arm rest and pop the trunk than looking under my car seat. 😉

Do people steal factory / built-in navs?

Do you really want to carry around yet another device on your person?

People pay for integration, cleanliness, & convenience. There's drawbacks to both sides. With that said, I still personally think it looks tacky if you have a nice car that's not a simple Civic and throw a portable GPS on your dash. This is not to say you went the cheap route... it just looks stupid, but then again care only if you want to. If it's an old vehicle that you had no choice in the matter, that's a different story.

If this were back in the 90's, I might agree with you. However, since the discovery of the removable faceplate radio, I simply can't. I advise you to check with your insurance company, and ask them. However, that mount you recommend makes you safer than most, as it doesn't leave any telltale marks on your windshield, and I bet 90% of people who saw it wouldn't know what it was for.

Theft of gps units rose over 700% in my state last year. I know we can't be alone in that stat. With the way things are with the economy, it's only going to get worst.

i wonder if the frequency of car breakins with gps increases the likelihood of getting your house broken into because most people have 'home' programmed into their gps.

Chances are...If they break into my car to get the beanbag from under the seat, they'll have broken into it anyway without it. They can't know that I have a beanbag mount under the seat without breaking into the car and looking under the seat first.

There's a cop who leaves about 5 houses down from my side of the street.
I don't know him personally and I haven't seen him in person but his house is my "home" location.
Which idiot would want to break into the home of a cop? 😛

BAHAHAHAHA. Try living in DC or New Jersey.
"Built-in" provides nothing but a false sense of security.

Face it- NYC, Chicago, Atlanta, etc can be downright scary to drive in. If you have someone telling you where to go it makes driving a lot more comfortable.

Atlanta scary to drive in? Sorry, but that made me laugh! Don't live there, but I do drive in ATL a few times a year and have yet to be scared at all.....and I'm probably old enough to be one of your parents.

The easiest way is to haul butt just like everyone else.....fit right in. And don't get too hung up about missing an exit, seen too many people just about damned stop in the left/middle lane and try to get all the way to the right (at 25 mph in a 60 mph or higher zone) simply because they suddenly realize their exit is 100 yards ahead and they're not in the right lane to catch the exit. If you are going to miss it, miss it. Catch the next exit and turn around.....takes only a minute or two out of your life and cuts down on the "scary" part.

I didn't say people pay for security in that shortlist there. Coincidentally, it is a deterrence though. And why is DC or NJ crime worse than NYC area?

My brother in law's Civic in Crooklyn was broken into because he left his stand visible... his GPS was naively left in the glove. Do you think these same thieves would hack into an Acura MDX sitting behind it to steal its nav instead knowing they both have nav units? Even if the Civic didn't, they'd look for another car with a portable rather than built-in.

Exactly!! My factory installed unit requires a code to make it work once it's removed from the battery. Not to mention that even if a thief could circumvent the code, the market to sell it would be extremely low, as it would only fit another TL. Why would someone bother when there are much easier targets?

Along these lines:

I am thinking of getting a built-in GPS/multimedia unit for my truck. While I was looking around online I kept seeing ads for Viper car alarms. Apparently there is one with a remote entry and ignition, remote alarm/alert with a range of one mile, and also supposedly a remote engine kill. It goes for about 400 bucks.

Do Viper alarm systems live up to their claims?

Most standalones should have some sort of security feature unless you bought one of those crappy $50 "off-brand" GPS at Wal-Mart.

My standalone unit has two security features. (I can't speak of TomTom and the others)
#1) Code.
#2) Secret location.

If a thief can't figure out either, it's useless for them. Even Garmin cannot hack their own units. If you mistakenly forget, they send you a "used" replacement. They can't fix your unit for you because it's impossible for them to do so.

When your GPS is stolen from your car, the theif knows (a) that you aren't careful about locking things, (b) where you live, and (c) that you aren't home.

If you really want directions from your GPS back home, mark a building a block away as your home. Then, if you still can't get home, you are a moron.

How about when they swipe your grage door opener and your GPS at the same time?

Whoo hooo! On the money!

Your GPS had robes put on it? [ie: stoled] 🙂

J/k.

I'd say get a GPS that's very small and hand held - must easier to conceal and/or carry around with you if you get lost... 🙂
